Proposal To Separate AG-Public Prosecutor Roles To Be Tabled To Cabinet This Month
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a proposal to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor will be tabled to the Cabinet at the end of this month.
He said the move is part of the ongoing legal reform agenda under the MADANI Government, implemented within just two and a half years in office.
'This separation (of the roles) has long been demanded, and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) will table it to the Cabinet at the end of this month. So, we are seeing encouraging progress,' Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said this in reply to Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who had asked which outdated laws were being reviewed or abolished in line with the government's reform agenda, and the timeline for their implementation.
Anwar also highlighted that the MADANI Government has so far introduced 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments - one involving citizenship, and the newly passed Parliament Services Act 2025.
Among key reforms cited were amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act, the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, the Ombudsman Bill 2025, and the Cyber Crime Bill 2025.
'I must emphasise that this record over two and a half years has yet to be matched by any previous administration, including that of the Honourable Member (Rosol),' Anwar said pointedly.
The Prime Minister said that five new acts were introduced and 34 acts amended in 2023; another five new acts were enacted and 57 acts amended in 2024; and four new acts have been passed, with six acts amended, along with two new bills and 11 other bills amended so far this year.
On the subject of anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar said he had no objection to enhancing or updating the current legislation.

"Social media was flooded with various accusations and fake information, including claims that she was put into a washing machine for two hours. Although police confirmed a few days ago that it was fake news, I believe many still think it actually happened. "So, this trend is unhealthy and dangerous if it is not curbed. It can cause public anxiety, especially since it is related to the safety of school students,' she said. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17 after being admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha dormitory, Papar at 4 am on July 16.

World recognises Malaysia's role in Thai-Cambodia peace efforts, says PM Anwar
LARUT: Malaysia's role as Asean Chair in facilitating reconciliation efforts between Thailand and Cambodia following recent border tensions has been recognised internationally, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that although there were certain quarters that refused to acknowledge Malaysia's role, the trust placed by the countries involved was clear proof that they held Malaysia's political and economic stability in high regard. "Thank God, in Malaysia our politics are stable and our economic development is respected. So, when disputes arise, the task of reconciliation is entrusted to us. This is a form of international recognition, even if some in Parliament may choose not to acknowledge it - and that is fine," he said. Anwar made the remarks when opening the Madani Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival at Farm Fresh Perak Dairy Complex on Saturday (Aug 16). Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek Earlier, US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. "For example, during the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, Thai milk could not enter Cambodia, but Farm Fresh milk successfully entered the market. "I am sharing this because our relations with Thailand and Cambodia are good. If Farm Fresh wishes to open a farm in Thailand, we will extend our full cooperation," he said. Anwar also stressed that the government will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the nation's food security, including the dairy industry. Expressing pride in the achievements of local dairy producer Farm Fresh Bhd, he praised the company for its contribution to the dairy sector, job creation for Malaysians, and commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Meanwhile, Farm Fresh chief operations director Azmi Zainal said the company's 828-acre complex in Perak is home to 4,300 dairy cows producing 22,000 litres of milk daily. "In a year, this complex produces 10 million litres of milk, making it the largest and most productive dairy farm in the country," he said, adding that the farm has 150 local workers, most of whom are under 30 years old. Farm Fresh also buys milk from local small farmers at competitive prices.
