Two-year-old girl found alive in suitcase as woman charged with child neglect
The bus driver noticed movement inside the bag during a planned stop in Kaiwaka - 60 miles north of Auckland - on Sunday after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment.
When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the girl.
The two-year-old was said to be "very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed", according to Detective Chief Simon Harrison.
The toddler was taken to hospital, where she remained on Sunday to undergo an extensive medical assessment.
Detectives did not say how long the girl was in the suitcase, or which cities the bus was travelling between.
A 27-year-old woman, who has not been named, was arrested and charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child. DCI Harrison said further charges are not being ruled out.
The woman is due to appear in court on Monday, and children's services have also been notified.

Entrada Travel Group, which operates New Zealand's national bus line, InterCity, told Sky News' US partner network NBC that the incident involved one of its buses.
"Police were called to respond and are investigating the matter. No one was harmed during the incident, and the service resumed," the group said in its statement.
InterCity states on its website that children up to two years old can travel for free on an adult's lap. Children aged three and older require a child ticket and need to travel with a guardian.
DCI Harrison praised the InterCity bus driver, "who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action, preventing what could have been a far worse outcome".

CANTON, Texas (KETK)– Two parents were arrested on Monday in Van Zandt County after a child was found in a hot car, sweating and bleeding from the nose, the sheriff's office said. Once Deel was placed into custody, deputies entered the RV and found a bed sheet covering a playpen located in the back corner of a 'bunkbed style location,' stopping any air flow, and laying partially on the child inside the pen was a blanket. 'After removing the bed sheet, deputies located the 9-month-old child lying on her back with several empty bottles in the pen and a small blanket,' the release said. 'Deputies pulled the playpen out where they could reach and recover the child. Upon picking the child up, they observed the child to be wearing a soiled diaper and very hot to the touch.' AFFIDAVIT: Tyler mother says ‘she forgot' infant in car during appointment
TYLER, Texas (KETK)– A mother was arrested Wednesday afternoon after she left her six-week-old baby in a hot car during her eye appointment in Tyler. Parents arrested in Van Zandt County after children found abandoned in hot car, RV According to the Tyler Police Department, around 11:45 a.m., officers responded to Stanton Optical on S. Broadway Avenue, where a six-week-old child had been left in a car that was not running by her mother, 22-year-old Adasia Henderson of Tyler. A Smith County arrest affidavit said that deputies talked with a Stanton Optical employee who said Henderson had been in the store from 10:30 a.m., finished an eye exam at 11:30 a.m. when she realized she had left her child in her car. '[The employee] advised Henderson went to the vehicle and recovered the child at around 11:40 a.m.,' the documents said. 'The child had been in the vehicle for up to one hour and 15 minutes. [The employee] indicated the child looked to be in severe distress, and she called 911.'
