One Piece star addresses backlash to Charithra Chandran's casting as Vivi in Netflix series

Express Tribune2 days ago
Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece is preparing for its second season, set to release in 2026, and discussion around casting has intensified following a recent teaser.
The preview, unveiled during a franchise celebration in Tokyo, introduced new characters including Lera Abova as Nico Robin, Callum Kerr as Smoker, and Charithra Chandran as Vivi.
Chandran's casting has drawn online debate, with some fans noting differences between her appearance and Vivi's depiction in the original anime.
In response, Rob Colletti, who plays Wapol in the series, addressed the criticism on social media. He questioned why some viewers accepted fictional elements such as 'rubber pirates' and 'giant walking, talking fish' but objected to a character being portrayed by a non-white actor.
Colletti reiterated that One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda personally selected Chandran for the role and highlighted that the Kingdom of Alabasta is influenced by Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures.
He expressed appreciation for fans who have welcomed the casting and encouraged them to continue challenging discriminatory behaviour within the fandom.
He also stated that negative reactions based solely on race were 'ignorant' and urged detractors to reconsider their stance. Chandran, in turn, acknowledged supportive messages on her Instagram, while sharing examples of criticism she had received.
Season 2 of One Piece will continue adapting the manga's storyline, with new and returning characters joining the ensemble cast when the series returns on Netflix in 2026.

'Wednesday' season 2 reaches 50 million Netflix views in five days after part one release

The second season of Netflix's Wednesday has recorded 50 million views within five days of release, making it the second most-viewed English-language TV week in the platform's history, behind only its first season. Part one of season two, consisting of four episodes, premiered on Wednesday, August 6 and reached the milestone by Sunday, August 10. According to Netflix, the series also achieved the highest number of first-week country rankings among English-language TV shows, holding the top position in 91 countries. While season two's initial figures fall short of season one's November 2022 debut, the two releases differ in structure. Season one was released in full, whereas season two is being released in two parts. Additionally, Netflix has since adjusted its measurement methods, now reporting viewership in total hours viewed and converting this figure into views based on runtime. In its launch week, season two recorded 201.6 million hours viewed, which equates to 50 million views. The Jenna Ortega-led series remains Netflix's most popular English-language TV show overall, with a total of 252.1 million views to date. Based on current performance, season two could enter the platform's all-time top 10 most popular shows, where the tenth-ranked title, Stranger Things 3, holds 94.8 million views. During the week of August 4, Wednesday season two was the most-watched Netflix TV title, with season one returning to the top 10 in second place, gaining 8.6 million views. Other top-performing series included Untamed with 7.2 million views and Hunting Wives with 4.7 million views.

Daredevil: Born Again season two could be the last, says Charlie Cox

Actor Charlie Cox has suggested that the upcoming second season of Daredevil: Born Again could mark the end of the Disney+ series. Speaking at GalaxyCon, the Daredevil star revealed that the latest season, which recently wrapped filming, includes a storyline element not found in the original Marvel Comics — a hint that the show may conclude. 'There's something we do in this final season that doesn't exist in the comics,' Cox told fans during the panel, fueling speculation about the show's future. His comments left some viewers disappointed, especially given that Daredevil: Born Again only debuted earlier this year as a reboot of the fan-favorite Netflix series. However, co-star Vincent D'Onofrio, who portrays Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, offered a different perspective. Responding to a fan on social media, D'Onofrio suggested there is 'a good chance' the series could continue into a third season, leaving the question open. Even if the Disney+ series concludes with season two, the character of Daredevil will remain active in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cox is set to reprise the role in the upcoming Spider-Man trilogy and future Avengers projects. In the comics, Daredevil frequently teams up with Spider-Man, indicating his storyline will extend beyond the streaming series. Uncertainty also surrounds the future of Kingpin in the MCU. While the character could continue appearing in other Marvel titles, his arc may wrap with Daredevil: Born Again or the forthcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in Spring 2026, ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Marvel fans will have to wait for official confirmation on whether season two will indeed be the last.
