
Harley-Davidson, Hershey, Adidas, Mercedes warn of profit woes and tariff costs after US-EU 15% deal
American motorcycle mainstay Harley-Davidson announced a net income of $108 million, down from $218 million during the same period last year, missing analyst expectations.
The company also said it would hold off on providing guidance for the year, after withdrawing sales and profit forecasts in May in the face of the tariffs.
In the apparel sector, Adidas shared warnings of its own. The company announced more than $6.8 billion in sales, a 2.2 percent increase in year-on-year sales, though the figure missed analyst expectations.
While the company still expects an operating profit in 2025, it told investors Trump's tariffs could increase its costs by up to $231 million.
'The year has started great for us and normally we would now be very bullish in our outlook for the full year,' Chief Executive Bjorn Gulden said on Wednesday. 'We feel the volatility and uncertainty in the world does not make this prudent.'
The company is weighing possible U.S. price increases, though it hasn't decided yet.
Though sales were up, operating profits were down 33 percent for chocolate giant Hershey compared with the second quarter of 2024.
The company said it expects adjusted earnings per share to decline between 36 and 38 percent, as the company confronts between $170 million and $189 million in tariff expenses, a roughly 10 times increase from its tariff cost estimates in May.
Mercedes, meanwhile, said tariffs would eat 1.5 percentage points into its operating margin, equivalent to $420 million in the second quarter.
The company will face levies as it imports vehicles to the U.S. from Mexico, China, and Europe, as well as input costs for importing parts to its Alabama vehicle factory.
During the second quarter, net profits were roughly $1.06 billion, down from $3.45 billion during the same period last year, as the company faces tariff headwinds and collapsing demand in China.

It's like, hey, he thought that the tariffs were going to tank the economy, and then he acknowledged that it didn't,' Fetterman told Fox News Digital. 'So, for me, it seems like the EU thing has been going well, and I guess we'll see how it happens with China.' Maher, a comedian and host of HBO Real Time, acknowledged he jumped the gun in his most recent episode of his Club Random podcast, where he cited his own estimation that the tariffs would have destroyed the US economy 'by July'. 'I remember I, along with probably most people, were saying at the beginning, "Oh, you know, by the 4th of July",' Maher recalled. 'The economy was going to be tanked by then. 'But that didn't happen,' Maher, who met Trump at the White House in April, said. Many Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren, have balked at Trump's tariff policy and many said it would lead to increased consumer prices. Fetterman's comments came as Trump signed an executive order Thursday that would have new tariffs on dozens of US trading partners to go into effect in seven days. Trump imposed a 35 percent tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Trump's 35 percent tariff was announced amidst a string of surprise modifications to his reciprocal tariffs on Thursday. His executive order was issued shortly after 7pm. It came after a flurry of tariff-related activity in recent days, as the White House announced agreements with various nations and blocs ahead of Trump's self-imposed Aug. 1 deadline. Trump had already secured about a dozen deals, with a mix between formal signed agreements and announced frameworks. Fetterman's comments as Trump signed an executive order Thursday that would have new tariffs on dozens of US trading partners to go into effect in seven days But it was still far short of the '90 deals in 90 days' touted by Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro back in April. He has been using changing deadlines – and the threats of high US tariffs he has announced publicly – to try to leverage the opening of foreign markets while bringing down the tariffs paid on imports. To sell the push to Americans, he has been touting new tariff revenues, with $150 billion collected in July, while floating new rebate checks. As per the new levies, Switzerland has been hit with a 39 percent tariff, Syria was lobbed a 41 percent tariff, Laos and Myanmar each received a 40 percent tariff and Iraq and Serbia joined Canada with a 35 percent tariff. Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Libya and South Africa all were handed 30 percent tariffs.

Columbia Sportswear sues Columbia University for trademark infringement
Outerwear retailer Columbia Sportswear has sued Columbia University over alleged trademark infringement and a breach of contract, saying that the university's merchandise looks too similar to its own offerings and can confuse shoppers. In a lawsuit filed on 23 July in federal court in Oregon, Columbia Sportswear, whose roots date back to 1938, alleges that the Ivy League university in New York City intentionally violated an agreement the parties signed on 13 June 2023. That agreement dictated how the university could use the word 'Columbia' on its own apparel and accessories. As part of the pact, the university could feature 'Columbia' on its merchandise provided that the name included a recognizable school insignia or its mascot, the word 'university', the name of the academic department, or the founding year of the university – 1754 – or a combination. Columbia Sportswear clothing is sold at more than 800 retail locations including more than 150 of its branded stores, as well as its website and third-party marketplaces. But Columbia Sportswear alleges the university breached the agreement a little more than a year later, with the company based in Portland, Oregon, noticing several garments without any of the school logos being sold at the Columbia University online store. Many of the garments feature a bright blue color that is 'confusingly similar' to the blue color that has long been associated with Columbia Sportswear, the suit alleged. The lawsuit offered photos of some of the Columbia University items that say only 'Columbia'. 'The likelihood of deception, confusion, and mistake engendered by the university's misappropriation and misuse of the Columbia name is causing irreparable harm to the brand and goodwill symbolized by Columbia Sportswear's registered mark Columbia and the reputation for quality it embodies,' the lawsuit alleged. The lawsuit comes at a time when Columbia University has been threatened with the potential loss of billions of dollars in government support. Columbia University recently reached a deal with the Trump administration to pay more than $220m to the federal government to restore federal research money that was canceled in the name of combating antisemitism on campus. Under the agreement, the Ivy League school will pay a $200m over three years, the university said. Columbia Sportswear aims to stop all sales of clothing that violate the agreement, recall any products already sold and donate any remaining merchandise to charity. Columbia Sportswear is also seeking three times the amount of actual damages determined by a jury. Neither Columbia Sportswear nor Columbia University could be immediately reached for comment.

Florida homeowners rush to make improvements to bag tax credit
In the wake of Donald Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill', Florida homeowners are clamoring to add solar panels to their homes before it's too late. Trump 's Big, Beautiful Bill Act was signed into law on July 4. Amongst restrictions to Medicaid and tightening on immigration, it also moved up the deadline for homeowners wishing to receive a tax credit for their solar panels. Now, homeowners who want to conserve energy and earn a 30 percent tax credit must have their solar panels installed by the end of the year. US Representative Kathy Castor told Floridians at a press conference this week: 'Our message today is if you are interested in lower–cost solar for your home or for your business, for your church, synagogue or mosque — you have to act now.' And act they have, but the rush is overwhelming local solar panel companies and creating a dismal future for the industry in Florida as a whole. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association , the appropriately named Sunshine State ranked third in the solar industry. Over 20,000 solar panel systems have been installed, employing 14,000 Floridians. The often sweltering heat and sunny conditions makes low–coast solar a good way to decrease electric bills and promote environmentally-friendly living. Bill Johnson, who runs Brilliant Harvest in Sarasota, Florida told the Tampa Bay Times : 'Within 48 hours of the bill being signed, we had enough contracts to complete the year.' It could take weeks for companies like Johnson's to obtain the proper permits and contracts to even begin installing solar panels. So to get that tax credit homeowners must start immediately. Steve Rutherford, the CEO of Tampa Bay Solar said he can't train enough installers to fulfill every request by the December 31 deadline. But after that deadline has come and gone, solar industry professionals worry what a drastic decline in demand will do to their business. Without the government incentive to install green energy, Tampa businesses could see job losses. Rutherford said that these realizations are 'a bit of a funeral in the industry'. Johnson was a little more optimistic and noted that he'd already had clients create contracts for next year, despite losing out on the tax credit. 'This is a body blow,' he said. Officials worried that losing federal support for solar programs could cause electric bills everywhere to rise, especially amidst the heat waves Tampa had seen this summer. 'As TECO, Duke and FP&L ask for higher rate increases and your electric bills go up, part of the reason is because of the big ugly bill, and taking away the tax credits you were enjoying for cleaner, cheaper energy,' said Castor. According to the United States Department of Energy , solar panels may still be a good thing for your wallet with or without a 30 percent tax cut. Installation can increase the value of a home by an average of $15,000. Depending on a home's location, sunlight exposure, and climate, owners could still save hundreds of dollars a year, per the US Department of Energy .
