Gold prices hit Rs 1 lakh! What's the outlook for gold and should you buy or sell the yellow metal? Explained
have been skyrocketing and how!
have breached the Rs 1 lakh mark, a historic first for the yellow metal. Gold has always been seen as a safe haven asset in times of uncertainty. Concerns over global economic growth, escalating China-US trade war are driving the rise in gold prices, with a weaker dollar having added to the momentum.

Experts believe that fundamentally markets are pricing in increased geopolitical risks, fuelled by US President Donald Trump's trade policy tensions and stagflation concerns which could continue to drive further gains for the yellow metal.
Central banks around the world have been on a gold buying spree for several quarters and have shored up their gold reserves to new highs. Incidentally, RBI has not only been buying gold, it has also been shifting significant quantities back to India.
Central banks on gold buying spree
But with the precious metal crossing the Rs 1 lakh mark - the important question in the minds of investors is - is the gold rally sustainable? How much steam is left in this rally? Also, should you be buying gold at such high levels, or is it time to book profits? We ask experts:
Rise of Gold
Naveen Mathur, Director - Commodities & Currencies, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers points out that gold has seen exceptional performance since the start of the year.
It has risen over 21% till date, touching new record highs more than 20 times this year.
According to a PTI report, 20 years ago in April 2005, gold was trading at Rs 6,267 per 10 grams on MCX. It has risen steadily through various global economic rises such as the 2008 financial meltdown, COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In April 2025, gold hit its all-time high level of Rs 1,00,000 for the August month delivery, which is a 41% surge in just 12 months.

Gold price outlook : Where are gold prices headed?
Abhilash Koikara, Head Forex & Commodity, Nuvama Professional Clients Group has a target for gold prices at $3,930 levels in dollar terms. According to Koikara, on MCX gold prices can test Rs 1,12,000 levels by December 2025.
NS Ramaswamy, Head of Commodity at Ventura sees gold continuing to be an attractive investment bet under the current global conditions. Price predictions for gold are being made on these premises and can fluctuate based on subsequent changes in the market conditions.
Factors like inflation, central bank demand, and economic uncertainty will continue to influence gold prices, he said.
'We believe that the prices in this euphoria may rise sharply this year to $3700 an ounce but the target by December 2025 should be around $3200 - $3300. In rupee terms the target for December 2025 should be close to Rs 92,000 – Rs 93,000 per 10 grams (due to expected rupee appreciation) with USDINR expected to be in the range of 83.50 – 84.50 by December 2025,' he told TOI.
After the year end 2025 corrections, with the impact of tariffs and economic slowdown across the globe, we could witness the safe haven demand for gold to surge in the year 2026 wherein we expect gold prices to surpass $4000 an ounce (Ranging between $3800 - $4200) an ounce, he added.
Naveen Mathur of Anand Rathi still sees room for a 10-15% rise in gold prices from current levels. $3800 – 3850 per oz in spot translating to levels of Rs 1,05,000 – 1,08,000 per 10 gm in the domestic markets, still looks possible till December 2025 end, he says.
MCX Gold VS BSE Sensex
According to Mathur, the current rally has been too fast as the rise from Rs 90,000 to Rs 1 lakh was seen only under the last 12 trading days while the run from Rs 80,000 to Rs 90,000 took about 77 days. 'This indicates price corrections of up to 5-10 % which could be seen in the coming weeks,' he told TOI.
Manav Modi, Senior Analyst, Commodity Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd believes gold could inch towards $3350-3500 and consolidate near the same.
'However, looking at the momentum, a rally towards $3700 over the long term can also not be ruled out. Assuming USDINR at 85, on the domestic front, immediate range is near Rs 96500- 1,00,000. From a longer term perspective, Rs 1,06,000 could be possible,' he says.

Gold @ Rs 1 lakh: Should you buy or sell?
Abhilash Koikara of Nuvama Professional Clients Group advocates buying gold on dips. 'We may witness shallow corrections in the coming days till $3,380 (approximately Rs 96,800)- $3,300 (approximately Rs 94,800) and such corrections must be used as a buying opportunity for medium/long term horizon for the specified targets,' he tells TOI.
NS Ramaswamy of Ventura says that with gold touching Rs 1 lakh, investors could either hold their long position or book profits to initiate a buy position in the range of Rs 92,500 – Rs 94,000 levels.
Asset Class Comparison
'Fresh buying at the present levels of Rs 98,000 to Rs 1,00,000 lakh is not recommended. Bottom fishing could be done at Rs 92,500 to Rs 94,000 levels,' he says.
Manav Modi of Motilal Oswal also advocates the same strategy for gold investors.
'If you are a new investor in gold, then a buy on dips strategy is the best way forward. Investors should definitely not sell, because the long term outlook is strong. For existing gold investors, partial profit booking and then re-entry at dips may be the right strategy,' he tells TOI.
Anand Rathi's Naveen Mathur says gold remains a long term buying opportunity for investors. 'We suggest investors continue to buy gold at regular intervals considering it as a portfolio diversifier against other asset classes from a long term perspective,' he concludes.

Repo rate cut fuels hope for homebuyers
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The announcement by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday to cut the repo rate by 50 basis points to 5.5% is likely to have far-reaching implications, particularly in tier-II cities like Bhubaneswar, where middle-income homebuyers stand to benefit from more accessible home loans, experts said. Amit Mamgain, director of a real estate firm, said that home loans with interest rates below 7.75% will make housing more affordable, especially in the mid-income and affordable housing segments. Industry experts are optimistic about the impact of the rate cut on the real estate sector. "The reduction could trigger increased demand in both residential and commercial sectors," Mamgain said. The move is particularly significant for prospective homebuyers who were waiting for the right opportunity. Priya Sharma, a resident of Niladri Vihar, expressed relief at the announcement, hoping to finally have a house of her dreams. "In a city like Bhubaneswar, where luxury apartments start at Rs 1.5 crore, the rate cut brings us closer to our dream of home ownership. With our life savings and financial assistance from the banks, we can now hope to have a house of our own," she said. Industry analyst Shrinivas Rao believes the rate cut comes at an opportune time amid a global growth slowdown. "Major commercial banks are expected to transfer the benefit to homebuyers and developers, which should stimulate real estate demand and investments," Rao said. Experts said the policy change means reduced EMIs on current loans, while new buyers will have access to more financial options. Developers are also likely to benefit from increased liquidity and renewed buyer confidence, which could boost sales. The real estate industry sees it as a positive step toward economic revival, with the potential to ease credit conditions and accelerate investment cycles. They said the move is particularly timely for first-time buyers and could inject fresh liquidity into project development. Stakeholders are optimistic that the rate cut will help sustain the current upward trend in consumer sentiment and contribute to the overall growth of the real estate sector.

MU revokes paid maternity leave for guest faculty and temporary staff
Mangaluru: In a cost-cutting move, Mangalore University (MU) has revoked paid maternity leave for guest faculty and temporary non-teaching staff. The syndicate granted four months of paid leave in July 2022, but the benefit was discontinued last month without alternative provisions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The cash-strapped MU aims for this move to significantly improve its financial condition, and the syndicate pointed out that there was no necessity to provide such benefits to guest faculty and temporary staff. Judith Mendonca, a syndicate member who proposed scrapping the policy, stated that guest faculty working under MU are paid a substantial amount of compensation compared to other state universities in Karnataka. The monthly salary is around Rs 40,000. Despite paying such a huge amount, their workload is minimal. There are guest faculty appointed for courses with fewer than 10 students. They have a maximum of three hours of work per day. In this scenario, it is an absolute financial burden on MU to offer the temporary staff such benefits. Therefore, MU has decided to withdraw and scrap the rule from May 2025 with immediate effect," explained Mendonca. The decision to offer paid maternity leave was taken after former syndicate member Ramesh K tabled the proposal. He informed that one of the guest faculty working in Kodagu district, which was earlier under MU, requested that all women guest lecturers be considered for paid maternity leave. No guest faculty or temporary staff under MU were eligible for the facility, even though many worked for more than a decade. The aim was to give them relief as they have no pay until they return to work. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, only contractual employees are eligible for six months of paid maternity leave, as directed by the state govt. Unhappy with the decision of MU, female guest faculty members said that they need to be given some other benefits for their welfare or reverse the decision.

What's behind traffic snarls at 5 key border points in Delhi?
Daily traffic chaos along Delhi-NCR borders is more than just routine rush hour chaos — it's also fueled by toll booths and plazas run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). According to a recent government report, these toll points are the primary culprits behind the massive jams seen during morning and evening peak hours. Five key Delhi borders, as per the document, face daily traffic due to the MCD toll booths: Sarhaul/Rajokri border on NH-48; Delhi-Meerut Expressway; Dwarka Expressway near Bijwasan; Badarpur border (MCD plaza on NH-19/44); Urban Extension Road II (UER II) at Jharoda Kalan (near Najafgarh-Bahadurgarh Road). The issue was raised at a recent meeting between the Centre and the Delhi government on a plan to decongest the city, which includes ongoing big infrastructure projects being executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve connectivity between Delhi and neighbouring cities. There are over 150 MCD toll booths, of which 13 are RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) enabled. Over 1 lakh commercial vehicles enter Delhi daily, of which more than 50% are cabs. The civic body earns around Rs 800 crore a year from toll charges. At the meeting, officials said, the NHAI highlighted that significant traffic congestion at Delhi's borders is attributed to the MCD toll plaza operations. 'Traffic jams are witnessed due to the heavy flow of commercial vehicles at the specified locations. It has also been observed that traffic speed decreases at these [five] locations, raising the risk of collisions with high-speed vehicles approaching from behind…,' said officials. Officials also highlighted that the MCD has deployed a fee-collecting agency at these locations, causing hindrance to the free flow of traffic during peak hours. The MCD, in its response to the issues highlighted by the NHAI, said, 'Traffic snarls are taking place due to narrowing/funnelling of road just before the boundary of Airport and merging of UER-II traffic…' Officials said a possible solution to address this issue is implementing the gantry-based Multi-Lane-Free-Flow (MLFF) tolling system with FASTag integration. The MLFF system has no physical plaza. The tolling system will be mounted on gantries, which will capture vehicle information as they pass through. 'The MLFF system enables seamless, real-time toll collection using passive RFID and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technologies. As vehicles approach the gantry, their FASTag and license plates are automatically scanned. This allows the system to electronically deduct the appropriate toll amount from the driver's prepaid account without the need to stop or slow down,' said a senior official. Officials said that as the NHAI is the expert in the field of tolling, the MCD is planning to seek support from it. Officials from the corporation will visit and study NHAI's successful toll sites. 'Apart from this, the MCD is also planning to protect its revenue by interlinking FASTag with bank accounts, permits, insurance, etc,' said officials. In the meantime, the NHAI has asked the civic body to expedite the process of setting up the MLFF tolling systems at the five border areas. 'The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) may be contacted for providing necessary support to MCD for fastag/tolling integration,' read the document. The meeting also discussed other issues, including a request from the NHAI to the MCD to deposit toll tax collections that were due after March 22, 2020. According to the document, an MoU was signed on July 12, 2019, between NHAI and the erstwhile South Delhi Municipal Corporation for collecting toll at the Badarpur Elevated Fee Plaza on NH-2. The agreement was valid from June 12, 2019, to July 12, 2020. However, SDMC has not deposited the agreed amount since March 22, 2020. NHAI has requested a payment of Rs 21.3 crore, which has now increased to Rs 23.3 crore due to interest. In response, the MCD said it is trying to recover the amount from the contractor who was handling toll collection at the time. Officials added that several cases have been filed in different courts, and the matter is currently sub-judice.
