United pilot refuses to fly after passenger smokes pot on plane: ‘Not willing to risk it'

New York Post7 days ago
He didn't want to be flying high.
A United Airlines pilot refused to fly from San Francisco to Cancun, Mexico on Tuesday after a passenger smoked pot on the plane, resulting in a nearly four-hour delay.
In a viral Reddit post, a passenger who was aboard flight UA1679 recalled how the ill-fated trip was initially 'delayed due to technical issues' then again after 'someone smoked weed in the front bathrooms.'
'They got removed from the flight then sat on the plane for 40ish minutes waiting for crew to figure out what to do,' they explained. 'Crew was concerned they got exposed, so we deplaned and are awaiting new crew.'
'The likelihood of testing positive from secondhand marijuana smoke in a well-ventilated aircraft is laughably low,' wrote A View From The Wing contributor Gary Leff. 'Yet I still understand the irrational fear given FAA drug testing regulations and zero-tolerance airline policies that punish even inadvertent exposure if a positive test occurs.'

The flyboy was reportedly afraid that getting exposed to secondhand weed smoke could cause them to fail a random drug test. According to the post, the captain had announced, 'I have 30 years left of my career at United, I'm not willing to risk getting drug tested when I get to Houston.'
The passengers' dreams of a smooth travel experience went up in weed smoke.
'Currently sitting in the terminal at SFO, no sign of a new crew yet,' the Redditor wrote. 'Original departure 8:50 am, current estimated departure 12:30 pm. Given a $15 meal voucher and they have rolled out a snack cart at the gate.'
The Post reached out to United for comment.
The flight was reportedly delayed for nearly four hours due to the incident.

Flight experts deemed the precaution a tad overzealous but totally understandable.
He added, 'Virtually any detectable level of marijuana metabolite in urine is considered a failed test, regardless of reason.'
Leff warned that a positive test could end a pilot's career after a 'lengthy investigation and loss of certification' and that said flyboy couldn't expect union protection sans evidence of 'passive exposure.'
'The pilot also has a duty to report any impairment concerns – if they even believe they might have some risk of impairment they are required to self-report it,' he explained.
Redditors were quick to pile on the puff puff pass-enger with one labelling the high-flyer a 'f–king idiot.'
'I feel if that happens that person needs to be fined for every single passenger's ticket,' said another.
'Should be an automatic lifetime ban across all airlines,' declared a third. 'Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.'
Many empathized with the pilot's decision not to risk joining the mile high club.
'As the captain should have!!' one declared. 'I'm not losing my job over y'all stupidity!! So yes your flight will be delayed. Due to your fellow passengers.'

Tech Mishap Sends Man Into Panic for Whole Flight

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A Massachusetts man has shared how he spent his entire flight worried after a notification came through on his watch telling him that his suitcase had been "left behind." Will, 20, shared the moment on Reddit's r/WellThatSucks, where the post has since gone viral with more than 61,000 upvotes. In the caption, he said: "Worried the ENTIRE flight until landing and realizing it was a glitch... New to AirTags and I guess this just happens? Lots of unnecessary panic." The alert from the Apple Airtag in his suitcase popped up shortly after takeoff from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, bound for Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport. Will He had been traveling around South Africa for two weeks and was proud to have avoided checking any luggage—until a gate agent insisted his overhead bag be taken at the door due to the plane's small cabin space. "At first when I got the notification I was nervous and rather confused," Will, who didn't give a surname, told Newsweek. "It was a small plane and an even smaller airport, so I didn't know how it could have been lost." Without WiFi onboard, Will couldn't refresh the AirTag's location and assumed the worst. The tracking app showed the last location of his suitcase at the Kruger airport, which added to his anxiety. "I remembered that there were many flights between the airports daily and I had a long enough layover where I could've waited until the next flight from Kruger with my bag before leaving Johannesburg," he said. "I was able to put my mind at ease enough with that." Thankfully, the panic ended the moment the plane landed in Johannesburg. As passengers disembarked via the ramp, Will spotted his suitcase being unloaded, and with the crew's permission, he got hold of it immediately. The Apple Airtag was launched in 2021. Small Bluetooth-enabled tracking devices are used to help track personal items with the help of the Find My app. While they don't have GPS, the vast size of Apple's device network means they can provide remarkably precise tracking worldwide. Since their launch they have surged in popularity with travelers, specially for monitoring checked luggage. During his layover, he shared the experience on Reddit—and by the time he arrived in London the post had gained viral attention with more than 61,000 upvotes. One commenter said: "Yeah, it's usually a false alarm and catches up." While another wrote: "My AirTag in my wallet does this all the time when my wallet is sitting next to me in the car."

Summer Thunderstorms Ground Flights At 6 East Coast Airports

Thunderstorms snagged air traffic along the Atlantic seaboard Wednesday, causing the FAA to issue ground stops for airports in the New York and Washington metro areas. Flight delays are piling up on Wednesday afternoon due to East Coast thunderstorms. getty Six major East Coast airport hubs—John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark in the New York area and Baltimore, Reagan National and Dulles in the Washington metro area—were under ground stops Wednesday afternoon due to thunderstorms, while Philadelphia was under a ground delay. By 4 p.m. EDT, more than 3,600 flights were delayed in the U.S., according to Flightaware data. U.S. airports with triple-digit flight delays included Chicago O'Hare, LaGuardia, John F Kennedy, Newark, Reagan National, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson and Denver. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Delta Air Lines issued travel advisories and waivers allowing passengers flying in and out of impacted airports to rebook for travel through Saturday, Aug. 16. A ground stop is a temporary hold on flights to manage air traffic flow and ensure safety. When an airport is under a ground stop, all aircraft must remain on the ground at their departure airport. If Dulles airport is under a ground stop, it impacts both departures and arrivals. Not at all. The FAA frequently issues a ground stop or a ground delay, another tool to manage traffic flow, when an airport is impacted by a severe storm. Both types of programs are common in the summer, when high temperatures combine with humidity and increase the likelihood and severity of thunderstorms. Why Are So Many Flights Delayed In Other Regions Across The U.s.? A significant weather issue in one region can lead to a national air travel headache because of how airlines reuse planes and crews for multiple trips during the day. A flight delay at LaGuardia can prevent a plane from making it to Denver, which can in turn bump back the same plane's subsequent flight to Seattle. When thousands of flights are delayed, it creates a domino effect throughout the rest of the day and into evening. 45,000. That's how many flights the FAA manages in the U.S. on any given day, on average.
