Online presence a boon for used car market

While the domestic car market remains wobbly, used car sales in certain segments are expected to recover, driven by stronger demand.
Both new and used car markets were predicted to remain sluggish this year due to banks and car financing companies' strict lending criteria to avoid non-performing loans amid elevated levels of household debt.
But in the used car market, sales of European car and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) segments increased, said Pinyo Tanawatcharaporn, owner of used car company Yo Ratchada and a former president of the Association of Used Car Dealers.
Sellers of used cars are benefiting from improving market conditions, which are attracting more buyers with limited budgets seeking convenience for purchases.
RISING DEMAND
Purchases of used cars in the European car and HEV categories are expected to increase, which is projected to raise prices by 10-15% in the second half of this year, said Asadavut Asasappakij, vice-chairman of King of Auto Products Co, the organiser of Fast Auto Show Thailand, an annual five-day car event held in early July.
Demand for premium European cars and HEVs is increasing because their prices are affordable, he said.
These vehicles offer good value and their features match the preferences of buyers, said Mr Asadavut.
"Used cars help people save money. Their value depreciates at a slower rate than that of a new car, making them a more stable investment in the long term," he said.
European cars are well-known for their high performance and comfort levels, while HEVs are eco-friendly vehicles that are becoming increasingly popular among buyers, said Mr Asadavut.
An HEV uses both an internal combustion engine (ICE) and a battery. The electric motor operates while the car is running at a slow speed, which helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
HEVs feature a generative braking feature that reduces the amount of energy wasted as heat and uses this kinetic energy to recharge the battery.
Japanese car brands dominate the used car market, with a variety of car types including ICEs and HEVs to choose from, said Mr Pinyo.
Japanese brands such as Toyota and Honda maintain a strong presence in the used car market due to their reliability, affordability and established service networks, he said.
"As for the European brands, BWM and Mercedes-Benz are popular," said Mr Pinyo.
LENDING HURDLES
The process of securing an auto loan continues to be a major hindrance for prospective buyers in the new and used car markets, as the rate of household debt in the country remains high.
Though household debt fell for five consecutive quarters as of July to 87.4% of GDP, the level still concerns lenders.
The drop reflects weaker loan demand as well as stricter lending standards imposed by financial institutions, according to the Bank of Thailand.
Loan applicants for a used car are more likely to be approved than applicants to buy a new vehicle, said Mr Asadavut.
Some used car dealers even offer to bear part of the interest payment to obtain approvals from car financing companies, though this assistance is on a case-by-case basis, he said.
However, the supply of used cars in good condition, especially those in the HEV and European car categories, is limited amid significant demand, said Mr Asadavut.
In other categories such as used battery EVs (BEVs), demand is weak.
"Used BEV sales are middling because of prices and concerns over battery life and high maintenance costs," said Mr Pinyo.
Many potential buyers are reluctant to purchase used BEVs because they are unsure whether the prices of new BEVs will decline as fierce competition weeds out market losers, he said.
In Thailand, sales of new BEVs are expected to reach 100,000 units this year, exceeding the target of 80,000 units, thanks to attractive prices and sales promotions, said Surapong Paisitpatanapong, vice-chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries and spokesman for its Automotive Industry Club.
During the first half of this year, domestic sales of BEVs soared 61% year-on-year to 54,084, representing an 18% market share in the passenger car category.
GREATER CONVENIENCE
The used car market has the potential to attract more prospective buyers if purchases are facilitated, said Mr Pinyo.
Like other products sold on online shopping platforms, used cars are following suit as new marketplaces develop.
"Used car dealers are moving to online sales, hoping to drive more consumer demand by offering more convenient services," he said.
The online used car market offers a wider selection of vehicles than visits to premises.
Prospective buyers can compare prices more easily and gain access to processes such as "at-home trade-ins" and delivery services, said Mr Pinyo.
Both new and established players in the industry have adopted digital technologies, helping to drive the trend, he said.
"Traditional dealerships and original equipment manufacturers are adapting by developing their own online platforms and digital strategies," said Mr Pinyo.
"Even wholesale used car auctions have moved online."
With features to help buyers find the best deals, more people unable to afford new cars are expected to consider used cars as an alternative, he said.

Amid escalating tensions between the United States and China, experts are urging Thailand to navigate the geopolitical landscape cautiously, preserving national interests rather than following Washington's lead. A forum, held recently by the International Media Club of Thailand (IMCT), highlighted China's rapid rise as a global competitor and the United States' mounting economic vulnerabilities. Global pressure tactics led by Washington are pushing nations in the southern hemisphere to align with China, with even India showing signs of pivoting away from its traditional US-aligned posture. Strategic interests matter Thanong Khanthong, president of IMCT, said Thailand must safeguard its interests in this turbulent international landscape. "Thailand cannot afford to follow the United States blindly. Our approach must be grounded in negotiation and strategic leverage," he said. He referred to high-profile meetings, including the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Analysts had previously estimated the chance of nuclear escalation in Eastern Europe at nearly 50 per cent. These moves, he argued, reflect broader global calculations, with China aiming to reduce European-Russian tensions and focus on countering US economic and technological dominance. The US motivation, he added, is not military but economic. Over two decades, Washington has shifted from cooperation to rivalry with China, deploying hybrid warfare, trade restrictions, technological competition, cyber operations, and targeted tariffs aimed at containing Beijing's growth and preserving Western dominance. "Currently, we are witnessing an almost multidimensional war between the United States and China, encompassing hybrid warfare, trade, technology, cyber operations, and targeted tariffs specifically aimed at undermining China," he said. Economic pressures mount China's rise is evident across multiple sectors. From high-speed rail networks and domestic aircraft production to renewable energy, electric vehicles, AI, and advanced smartphone and semiconductor manufacturing, Beijing steadily challenges Western monopolies, said Mr Thanong. In response, the US has applied protective tariffs, aiming to weaken China and force other nations to negotiate on its terms. He said Thailand must resist becoming a pawn in a zero-sum game. He suggested exploring multilateral cooperation through emerging global frameworks such as Brics. He warned that Trump's confrontation with Brics, where China plays a key role, is driving the group closer together. Even India is shifting. Coordinated action by China, India, and Russia, alongside digital currencies like the yuan or Brics Pay, could weaken US dollar dominance and alter global geopolitics.. "Thailand's future lies in joining multipolar economic systems, rather than remaining tethered to the US, designed Indo-Pacific strategies aimed at containing China militarily," he said. Kraisin Vongsurakrai, deputy secretary-general of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, analysed Thailand's economic engines: domestic consumption, exports, government spending, and foreign investment, all currently showing weakness. Tourism provides temporary support but cannot offset structural vulnerabilities. He also noted that much foreign investment in Thailand originates indirectly from China, though political instability remains a concern for investors. Multilateral approach The forum also explored global trade dynamics. In 2022, the US restricted collaboration with China on advanced technology, while China pursued its Belt and Road Initiative, established trusted domestic brands, and developed cutting-edge AI and space capabilities, said Mr Kraisin. Chinese performance is approaching US levels, prompting Washington to impose restrictions on international support for Beijing's space and technological ambitions, he said. "China's sustained investment in Thailand, alongside Brics' growing economic influence, offers Bangkok opportunities to engage with a shifting multipolar world rather than rely exclusively on Western partnerships," he said. Brics' global economic share has overtaken the G7, rising from 16.9 per cent in 1995 to 31.2 per cent in 2023. Brazil's announcement to reduce reliance on the US dollar underscores the systemic shifts reshaping global finance. Against this backdrop, Thailand faces US tariffs, restrictive Chinese import levies, and trade pressures that constrain flexibility, making strategic negotiation essential. Mr Kraisin said Thailand's private sector alone cannot manage these challenges. He urged government intervention to coordinate industrial policy and mitigate inequality. This would enhance resilience and provide a platform for negotiating from strength in regional and global arenas. "This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China. The business sector has organised activities and launched the China Enterprises Association, comprising around 400 reputable Chinese investors in Thailand, supported by the Chinese embassy. "The aim is to reduce the shady business of Chinese operations in Thailand. It is time for legitimate Chinese businesses to step forward and help phase out the grey operations," he said. Looking ahead As the US and China continue a multidimensional rivalry, Thailand must carefully balance its alignment. Overreliance on Washington risks exposure to trade and geopolitical conflicts, while ignoring Beijing could jeopardise growth and stability, he said. The panellists emphasised that Bangkok's strategy must centre on pragmatic negotiation, multilateral engagement, and domestic reforms.

Thailand's medium-sized motorcycles (engines of 250-800cc), a key export product to the US, are likely to retain their market share despite the new 19% reciprocal tariff. According to Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, although the price of Thailand's medium-sized motorcycles is rising, they still remain 23-32% cheaper than Japanese competitors. This price advantage should allow Thailand to retain its share in the US market for this segment, he said. "The tariff reduction by the US to levels similar to regional competitors helps lessen the incentive for manufacturers to relocate production bases to avoid high tariffs, while also preventing a partial loss of market share in the US," said Mr Pornchai. "In some industries, Thailand's strengths in quality and production networks provide a competitive edge, even with higher tariff burdens." Although these new tariffs present significant challenges, they also represent a valuable opportunity for Thailand to restructure its economy and strengthen competitiveness, moving towards an economy that relies more on innovation, technology and diversified markets, he said. To achieve this, Mr Pornchai said the Finance Ministry must work with all stakeholders to ensure maximum effectiveness for its measures and build resilience in the Thai economy to withstand future changes in global trade conditions. Exporters' ability to adapt is critical, as products with profit margins of less than 10% may need to urgently cut costs and improve production efficiency or they may be unable to fully absorb the added tax burden without raising prices, he said. Small and medium-sized exporters with limited ability to adjust will be hit harder than large corporations because they have fewer resources and less bargaining power to share the tax burden or relocate production bases, said Mr Pornchai. To address these challenges, he said the government recently approved a stimulus plan worth 157 billion baht, with projects under Phase 1 and Phase 2 already endorsed. For Phase 1, on June 24 the cabinet approved 481 projects with a budget of 115 billion baht, focusing on infrastructure investment in water and transport (85 billion baht), tourism development (10 billion), export impact mitigation and productivity enhancement (11.1 billion), and community economy (9.20 billion). These projects aim to provide short-term economic stimulus, create jobs and lay the foundation for long-term development, said Mr Pornchai. For Phase 2, on Aug 5 the cabinet approved an additional 18.5 billion baht to enhance competitiveness and develop human capital. This phase covers two main projects, including the Competitiveness Enhancement Fund for Targeted Industries (10 billion baht), aimed at assisting businesses affected by the reciprocal tariff and global minimum tax, while also attracting investment in strategic industries. The Human Capital Development Investment Project was allocated 8.48 billion baht to provide education loans through the Student Loan Fund to 139,481 new and existing students to prevent dropouts in the 2025 academic year.
