Paul Dano to Write and Direct Comedy For Universal Pictures and The Daniels — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant27-06-2025
Almost a decade ago, actor Paul Dano ( Little Miss Sunshine , There Will Be Blood , Love & Mercy ) and filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert blew away Sundance Film Festival attendees with Swiss Army Man , but now the trio now looks ready to reunite on Dano's next director outing. Deadline reports that Dano is set to write and is in talks to direct a new untitled comedy for Universal Pictures, with Kwan, Scheinert and their partner Jonathan Wang producing through their Playgrounds banner. Dano is also in talks to produce.
Plot details are being kept under wraps other then it being a high-concept, original comedy. The Daniels have a first-look deal at the studio and, while they are still deep in development on a follow-up to their Oscar Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, this film would mark one of the first major projects they are solely producing under the deal.
Dano just completed shooting the Olivier Assayas film The Wizard of the Kremlin in which he plays the title character amongst a cast that includes Jude Law, Alicia Vikander and Jeffrey Wright.

Is 'War of the Worlds' the worst movie of 2025?

It's got an epic title, a big-name star as its lead and a major studio behind it. But since it was released on Amazon's Prime Video on July 25, 'War of the Worlds" has become an all-time ratings bust. The new adaptation of H.G. Wells' book was ranked as one of the worst films of all time by the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars Ice Cube as Homeland Security surveillance and threat assessment expert Will Radford, who uses government technology to spy on, and later help, his children amid an unfolding alien invasion. Radford is at his desk the entirety of the film, watching events unfold in front of him on a computer screen. Eva Longoria, Michael O'Neill, Olivia DeLaurentis and Clark Gregg also star in the movie, which was directed by Rich Lee. On Rotten Tomatoes, the sci-fi movie has a paltry 3% rating on the "Tomatometer," which tracks critic reviews, and 21% on the "Popcornmeter," which tracks audience reviews. Rotten Tomatoes' 'Worst Movies at All Time' list ranks 'War of the Worlds' 88th. The 2002 sci-fi thriller ' Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever" is No. 1. The only other title from 2025 to make the list is Sylvester Stallone's 'Alarum.' Just one critic, Jordan Hoffman of Entertainment Weekly, gave "War of the Worlds" a certified fresh ranking, writing, " It's certainly stupid, but it's also a great deal of fun." Most others described the film as the worst take on Wells' 1898 novel about Martians invading Earth. Past adaptations include the Orson Welles-directed CBS Radio broadcast in 1938, a Gene Barry-starring 1953 Technicolor film and Steven Spielberg's 2005 film, which starred Tom Cruise. Lee 'butchers the classic sci-fi parable on humankind's colonialist ills and creates an obnoxiously dull, utterly braindead (arguable bootleg) exercise in capitalist, surveillance state propaganda,' wrote one Rotten Tomatoes critic. Some online noted that they felt like the movie's tagline — which is 'It's worse than you think' — is an appropriate way to summarize their reactions to the film itself. Lee and the cast have not publicly addressed the reaction. Neither Universal Pictures, which produced the film, nor Amazon Studios, which distributed it, responded to requests for comment. (Universal Pictures is a division of NBC News' parent company, NBC Universal.) But as with some other films that receive poor reviews, the reaction to "War of the Worlds" has also made it buzzy. Many viewers have transformed Ice Cube's reactions in various scenes into memes and GIFs. The film has solidified a place on the online database Know Your Meme. The website attributes the rise in online traction to a July 21 post on X from the user 'PoorOldRoloTony,' who shared a clip from the film. The user wrote, 'War of the Worlds (2025) is the worst adaption of the source material to date. It had no ideas beyond the found footage approach.' The post had been viewed 1.9 million times as of Tuesday. Users across TikTok and X have also continued to poke fun at the acting, dialogue, oversimplified device hacking and heavy-handed messaging about mass government surveillance and conspiracy theories. 'Sounds like Ice Cube is reading directly from a script that he had never seen before...,' a TikToker wrote in the text of their video, which featured a clip from the film. The video has been viewed 1.1 million times. One TikToker even impersonated Ice Cube, recording themselves dressed as him and reciting lines from the movie. Some viewers have also criticized the movie's placement of Amazon products, including scenes that feature a Prime Air delivery drone and a character receiving a $1,000 Amazon gift card. Vetz, a YouTube channel that ranks and review movies, cited the product placement as one of the main reasons the film ranks on its 10 worst movies of 2025 list. 'The worst product placement I've ever seen in my life,' said Joel, a reviewer for the channel, which has 261,000 subscribers. On the popular movie tracking platform Letterboxd, the film averaged just 1 star from the roughly 90,000 people who logged having watched it.

‘Fubar' Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is not proceeding with a third season of Arnold Schwarzenegger's spy action series Fubar. The decision comes about a month and a half after Season 2 launched on the platform on June 12. It follows a surprisingly soft return for the series, which, likely fueled by Schwarzenegger's global star power, had a strong debut in May 2023 and also stars Monica Barbaro who became an Oscar nominee between Seasons 1 and 2 for A Complete Unknown. More from Deadline 2025 TV Cancellations: Photo Gallery 'Ransom Canyon' Promotes Casey W. Johnson To Series Regular For Season 2 7 Differences In Netflix's 'My Oxford Year' Film Vs. Julia Whelan's Book With Season 2 released more than two years after Season 1 dropped, Fubar barely made Netflix's Top 10 for English-language series in its first week, landing in the last spot with 2.2M views from Thursday through Sunday, down from about 11M views for the show's Season 1 premiere weekend. Season 2 peaked at #7 in its first full week with 3.3M views and logged one more #10 finish in Week 3 with 1.8M views before dropping out of the Top 10. This still is a rare Netflix cancellation of 2025, joining another sophomore action drama, The Recruit, and freshmen Pulse and The Residence. The streamer has renewed close to 20 scripted shows since the start of the year, most recently limited series Untamed for Season 2, Shane Gillis' comedy Tires for Season 3 and romantic dramas Ransom Canyon for Season 2 and Virgin River for Season 8. Fubar centers on a CIA operative (Schwarzenegger) on the verge of retirement who discovers a family secret and is forced to go back into the field for one last job. Carrie-Anne Moss joined the cast in Season 2 as Greta Nelso, a former East German spy who has a passionate history with Luke Brunner (Schwarzenegger). Season 2 also stars Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Aparna Brielle, Guy Burnet, Andy Buckley, Jay Baruchel, Barbara Eve Harris and Scott Thompson. Nick Santora serves as showrunner and executive produces with Schwarzenegger. Additional executive producers are Adam Higgs, Scott Sullivan, Phil Abraham, Amy Pocha, Seth Cohen and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Matt Thunell. EXCLUSIVE: After hitting it big with the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell rom-com Anyone but You, Will Gluck hopes lightning strikes twice as he looks to have landed on another pair of young stars to light up the screen for his next feature. Sources tell Deadline that Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner are set to star in One Night Only for Universal Pictures. Sources also say the film will bow on August 7, 2026. Gluck will direct the project based on his rewrite of Travis Braun's Black List script. More from Deadline Eddie Murphy, 'Happy Gilmore 2' Helmer Kyle Newacheck Team On Imagine Comedy 'Playas Ball' Michael Bay & Will Smith Part Company On Netflix Action Film 'Fast And Loose' 'Fubar' Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons The script topped the 2024 Blacklist, and while it's unknown if Gluck's version will stray from the original story, the draft follows two strangers who scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal. Gluck will produce through Olive Bridge Entertainment. Jacqueline Monetta, VP of Olive Bridge Entertainment, will oversee and produce with Gluck. Senior EVP Production Development Erik Baiers and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for the studio. RELATED: Gluck had been weighing a handful of options following the success of Anyone but You and finally landed on this project on his next film. Given his track record of taking rising stars including Emma Stone, Sweeney and Powell and turning them into A-listers, the project attracted a ton of talent; Barbaro and Turner were top choices from the start. Barbaro has had a slew of offers to choose from following her first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for her star-making performance as the iconic folk singer and activist Joan Baez in James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. She is in production on Luca Guadagnino's Artificial opposite Yura Borisov and Andrew Garfield for Amazon MGM. Next up, Barbaro will make her stage debut at London's National Theatre in a revival of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liasons Dangereuses opposite Lesley Manville and directed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliott. She'll also star in Bart Layton's Crime 101 opposite Mark Ruffalo, Halle Berry and Chris Hemsworth for Amazon MGM. Barbaro is also known for her breakout role as Phoenix opposite Tom Cruise and Miles Teller in Top Gun: Maverick, which received six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. As for Turner, he next will star in the film Rose of Nevada from Protagonist Pictures, written and directed by Mark Jenkin, opposite George MacKay, which will have its world premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. He also will star in A24's romantic comedy feature film Eternity, directed by David Freyne, opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller. The film is set to debut at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival in September before its theatrical release in November. Also upcoming, Turner will appear in the drama thriller film Rosebush Prunning, directed by Karim Aïnouz, starring alongside Jamie Bell, Riley Keough, Elle Fanning and Pamela Anderson. Turner recently completed production on Neuromancer, Apple TV+'s adaptation of William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel. He will star as Case in the 10-episode series from creators Graham Roland and JD Dillard. He also attended the 2025 Sundance Film Festival for the world premiere of Atropia, a war satire film written and directed by Hailey Gates, produced by Guadagnino, also starring Alia Shawkat. The film won the Grand Jury Prize in the festival's U.S. Dramatic Competition. Gluck directed the 2023 box office hit Anyone but You, starring Powell and Sweeney. He also helmed 2011's Friends with Benefits, starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, and 2010's Easy A starring Stone, in addition to launching the Peter Rabbit franchise. Barbaro is represented by UTA, Range Media Partners and Meyer & Downs. Turner is represented by WME and Curtis Brown (UK). Gluck is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer.
