Surfing icon Dale Webster, a California native who set the record for most consecutive days surfing, has died.
Webster, also known as the 'Daily Wavester' because of the incredible feat, passed away in Rohnert Park, Calif, his family confirmed to the New York Times and other outlets.

No cause of death was confirmed, but Webster's brother told the outlet that the surfer had been dealing with a decline in health in recent years.
Webster was best known for setting the world record in February 2004 when he hit 10,407 consecutive days of surfing.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, that mark consisted of him surfing at least three waves to shore every day.
In an interview with SURFER in 2015, Webster told the magazine that the idea for surfing came about from a friend after he had already been on the board every day for more than two months.

'There was a solid south swell in September, and I surfed every day during the swell,' Webster said at the time.
'Each day the waves got better and better. After surfing 85 days straight, my friend said, 'You should try to surf for 100 consecutive days.' When I got to 100, the story was in the local newspaper. That publicity gave me a little pat on the back to make it to a year. So then the challenge became a year. And so forth.'

Webster began his journey on Sept. 3, 1975, in Bodega Bay, California.
By the time he finished, he had surfed 14,642 days consecutively before having to break the record because of a minor medical procedure.
That time totaled over 40 years of consecutive surfing.

'He was a surfer, that was his main thing, that was his life ambition. I don't think he ever second guessed it,' William Beal, a close friend of Webster's, told the SFGate following the news of his passing.
'I know he had a lot of good years here when it was not that crowded. I think he had a pretty well-lived life.'

Kirkby Lonsdale man to attempt gruelling Guinness World Record

A Kirkby Lonsdale man is attempting to break a Guinness World Record. Greg Dunnings, a former soldier, will undertake the gruelling challenge on Saturday, August 30, at Carlisle Lake District Airport. The 34-year-old will attempt to pull a van for the greatest distance in 24 hours, aiming to beat the current record of 32 miles. He is raising funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, The Coldstream Guards charity and The Fire Fighters charity. Mr Dunnings will attempt to pull a van for the greatest distance in 24 hours (Image: Supplied) Mr Dunnings served in the Coldstream Guards for five and a half years before being medically discharged due to injuries sustained in an IED blast during Operation Herrick 11. These injuries caused damage to his lower leg and left him with a knee held together with screws. Since leaving the military, Mr Dunnings has been with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service for over seven years, currently serving at Preston Fire Station. Mr Dunnings said: "My grandad served in the Grenadier Guards, and my older brother Zak was in 3 Para — so giving back to the Armed Forces community means everything to me. "SSAFA was there for me when I needed help, and I want to make sure they can be there for the next person too." Pulling a van continuously around a 1km loop is a childhood dream for Mr Dunnings. He said: "I've always wanted a Guinness World Record. "My grandparents bought me the book every Christmas. "But I wanted to do something worthwhile — not just sit in a bath of beans. "After ultra-marathons, carrying a rowing machine around the Yorkshire Dales' Three Peaks, and winning Gold at the Invictus Games, I've learned that I'm good at suffering — and this record is all about suffering." Mr Dunnings has faced several training setbacks and persistent injuries recently but is determined to see the challenge through. He said: "I ran the Manchester Marathon in April and have been training by dragging a massive tyre around my local rugby club. "Training's not been ideal due to a few niggles, but I'm used to pushing through. "This is about raising money for three brilliant charities — SSAFA, The Coldstream Guards Charity and The Fire Fighters Charity — and showing what's possible when you don't give up." Mr Dunnings has already raised £1,000 for each charity but aims to raise even more through his extraordinary effort. He encourages people to come and show their support throughout the challenge. Toronto Raptors offer update on leadership after Masai Ujiri departure

To fill the void left by their firing of former team president Masai Ujiri, the Toronto Raptors are promoting from within. The team announced Monday, Aug. 18 that it has extended the contract of general manager Bobby Webster. The Raptors also indicated they will not appoint a president to replace Ujiri — who was fired on June 27 — and that Webster will serve as head of basketball operations, with support from the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) leadership. 'Going through this comprehensive process this summer and meeting with external candidates played a critical role in arriving at this decision as it made clear that we already have the right person leading the Raptors in- house,' MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley said Monday in a statement. 'When we weighed the many considerations, including roster construction, team culture and competitive landscape, it made perfect sense to officially hand the team to Bobby and give him the time and support to allow his plan to develop.' Webster, 40, got his start in the NBA in the league office, where he spent seven seasons under former commissioner David Stern and current head Adam Silver. Webster was instrumental in negotiating the 2011 collective bargaining agreement with the National Basketball Players Association. Webster then joined the Raptors, where he has served in the front office 13 seasons, nine as general manager. 'After spending time together this summer in Las Vegas, I was very impressed by Bobby's leadership style, his rapport with the players and staff, his reputation with his peers across the league and — especially and importantly — his vision for the Raptors,' Pelley said. 'This team is his, now, to lead and I know we all look forward to what comes next.' Alongside Ujiri, Webster was one of the key figures in building the Raptors roster that won the 2019 NBA Finals, when they beat the Golden State Warriors in six games. Webster had a hand in roster construction, organizational structure and daily operations. Since then, the Raptors have made the postseason just twice in six years, failing to get out of the second round. A big factor in that was the departure of star forward Kawhi Leonard, who played just one season in Toronto before he signed with the Clippers in July 2019. And then, by trading forward Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers in January 2024, the Raptors signaled that they would be entering a rebuild. The Raptors went 30-52 last season, which placed them 11th in the Eastern Conference and out of the play-in picture. 'I'm grateful to Keith, to the board, and to our ownership for this opportunity — the chance to continue the work that I love, for a team, a city, and country that's become home,' Webster said Monday in a statement. 'The things that are important to me — a deep love for basketball, thoughtful and empowering leadership, and a competitive fire — are the pillars of who I am as a leader. That's what you'll see from me every day. This is a new chapter in Raptors basketball, but one thing that will not change is our passion for winning, and our goal to bring another championship to Toronto.'
