China ties have made steady progress, looking forward to meeting Xi, says PM
NEW DELHI: The recent Sino-Indian detente seemed set for a significant step forward with PM Narendra Modi saying Tuesday that bilateral ties have made "positive and steady" progress guided by respect for each other's interests and sensitivities, and accepting President Xi Jinping's official invitation to visit China for the SCO summit.
The invitation along with a message from Xi was delivered to Modi by Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, who called on the PM after his meeting with NSA Ajit Doval for the Special Representatives' talks on the boundary question. Recalling his meeting with Xi in Kazan in Oct, which opened the doors for normalisation of the relationship after an intense military standoff, Modi said he was looking forward to meeting the Chinese president on the margins of Eurasian bl-oc summit in Tianjin on Sept 1.
"Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity," said Modi in a post on X after the meeting with Wang.
According to an Indian readout, Modi also emphasised the importance of maintaining peace on the border, and reiterated India's commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.

This was underlined by Doval in his meeting with Wang in which they discussed issues related to de-escalation, delimitation and boundary affairs. Wang also shared with the PM his positive assessment about his meetings with both Doval and external affairs minister S Jaishankar, saying there was "new consensus" on border management, maintenance of peace and on starting boundary delimitation talks.

Doval and Jaishankar strongly raised the need to fight terrorism in all its forms, underscoring that it was one of the original objectives of SCO.
According to MEA, Wang, who will visit Pakistan this week, concurred that countering terrorism should be given highest priority.
"The PM welcomed the steady and positive progress in bilateral ties since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, guided by mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra," said the Indian govt, adding Modi thanked Xi for the invitation and expressed support for China's presidency of the SCO Summit.
Modi will arrive in Tianjin on Aug 31 for what will be his first visit to China in over seven years. He had last visited China in 2018, again for the SCO summit. SCO has been an important forum for India to assert its strategic autonomy but his visit on this occasion has evoked more than just a cursory interest, as it comes in the middle of what many see as the worst phase in India's ties with the US in decades.
While the Trump administration seems to have made peace with Moscow, it continues to target India for its energy imports from Russia, accusing the Indian govt of funding Vladimir Putin's war.
Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro accused India of "now cozying up" to both China and Russia, as he made his point about the risks involved in transferring cutting-edge US military technology to India.
In his meeting with Wang, Doval hailed new energy and momentum in ties, saying with tranquillity in border areas, there had been more substantive engagement. Wang too said this year, the border situation had remained stable and was improving.

Urea shortage due to Congress govt's mismanagement, charges Ramchander Rao
Hyderabad: Telangana state BJP President N Ramchander Rao on Wednesday alleged that mismanagement of the Congress government in supplying urea to farmers is leading to artificial shortage in the state. Addressing a press conference at state office here, Ramchander Rao accused Revanth Reddy government of creating panic in the minds of farmers by spreading false information that Centre has not supplied sufficient urea to the state. Rao alleged that the state government has failed to present facts before the farmers and resorting to blaming Modi government to derive political mileage. False information and mismanagement by the state government is leading to hoarding of excessive stock by the farmers, he accused. He alleged that Congress party is 'mother of all lies' and its state government also distorting 'facts as lies'. Giving details of urea supplied by the central government the state BJP chief posted a challenge to Agriculture minister Tummala Nageshwara Rao for a debate on supply of urea. Rao said 'I will resign from my post if my figures proved wrong or you should resign'. Vehemently denying allegations of state Congress government on supply of Urea, the state BJP chief presented data of requirement, supply, stock and distribution stating that Modi government has supplied surplus urea to Telangana against its requirement. The Centre has supplied 12.47 Lakh Metric Tons (LMT) during Rabi season 2024-2025 as against requirement of state government of 9.87 LMT. He further stated that the state government has sold only 10.43 LMT and it has 2.04 LMT as opening stock till March, 2025 which is not showing in its representation. For Kharif season (from April 25 to September 25), the state government has buffer stock of 7.22 LMT. The Centre has supplied 8.30 LMT out of 9.80 LMT requirement of the state government till Wednesday, Rao said. Modi government being a farmer-friendly government has provided Rs 1.40 lakh crore subsidy on fertilisers to help farmers and increase productivity, Rao said. There was some discrepancies in production of fertiliser due to technical issues in Ramagundam fertilise plant other places and technical snag has been resolved, he said adding that an additional of 50,000 metric tons of urea will reach Telangana very soon, Rao said. The BJP chief questioned Tummala why Khammam district need additional stocks of urea this time as last year it had consumed 3,200 MT. Replying to a question, Rao asked why Congress party has not announced a BC leader as Vice President candidate when it is really in favour of BCs welfare. He alleged that the Congress party has no sincerity to provide reservations to Backward Classes as it wanted to use them a vote bank.

"India Not An Adversary Like China": Nikki Haley Warns Trump Over Tariff
Washington: Amid Donald Trump's administration's punitive tariffs on India over its Russian oil trade, Nikki Haley, former US Ambassador to the United Nations, has cautioned that ties between Washington and New Delhi are near a breaking point, and said it was critical to get the relations back on track if America hopes to contain China's growing global ambitions. In a Newsweek op-ed published Wednesday, Haley said India must not be treated as an adversary like China, and the Trump administration can't let the issues of tariffs or the US role in the India-Pakistan truce drive a wedge between two of the world's largest democracies. The last few weeks witnessed an explosive series of events in India-US relations, with the Trump administration threatening India with 25 per cent tariffs for purchasing Russian oil, on top of the 25 per cent duty that the United States has already slapped on Indian goods. These developments followed months of escalating tension, including over New Delhi's refusal to accept the US role in India-Pakistan ceasefire negotiations. "To achieve the Trump administration's foreign policy goals-outcompeting China and achieving peace through strength-few objectives are more critical than getting US-India relations back on track," she wrote. Trump's Republican colleague, Haley, has remained a vocal Trump critic despite endorsing him for the 2024 presidential run. She noted that "India must be treated like the prized free and democratic partner that it is-not an adversary like China, which has thus far avoided sanctions for its Russian oil purchases, despite being one of Moscow's largest customers." "Scuttling 25 years of momentum with the only country that can serve as a counterweight to Chinese dominance in Asia would be a strategic disaster," she warned. Haley noted that in the short-term goals, New Delhi is essential in helping Washington move its critical supply chains away from China. "While the Trump administration works to bring manufacturing back to our shores, India stands alone in its potential to manufacture at a China-like scale for products that can't be quickly or efficiently produced here, like textiles, inexpensive phones, and solar panels." In the defence sector, New Delhi's expanding military ties with Washington's allies, including Israel, not only make India a crucial market for US defence equipment, but also an asset to the free world's security, she said. She also noted that India's growing clout and security involvement in the Middle East could prove essential in helping to stabilise the region as America seeks to send fewer troops and dollars there. Haley emphasised India's location at the centre of China's vital trade and energy flows could complicate Beijing's options in the case of a major conflict. "In the longer term, India's significance is even more profound. Home to more than a sixth of humanity, India surpassed China as the world's most populous country in 2023, with a young workforce that contrasts with China's ageing one," she said. India is the world's fastest-growing major economy, and Haley noted its rise represents the most significant geopolitical event since China's, and is among the greatest obstacles to China's goal of reshaping the global order. "Simply put, China's ambitions will have to shrink as India's power grows. Yet, unlike Communist-controlled China, the rise of a democratic India does not threaten the free world," she added. Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley was the 29th US ambassador to the United Nations from January 2017 to December 2018 in Trump's first administration. She was the first Indian American to serve in a presidential cabinet.
