Selena Gomez Drops New Music, But Hitting No. 1 Seems Out Of Reach

Forbes03-05-2025

For the first time in her career, Selena Gomez missed hitting No. 1 with a new album. Just a few weeks ago, she and her fiancé Benny Blanco released I Said I Love You First, on March 21. The project succeeded in large part due to Gomez's incredible popularity, as she remains one of the most-followed people on social media and juggles successful careers in TV, film, music, and cosmetics. As a multihyphenate and accomplished businesswoman, Gomez is used to topping the Billboard 200 every time she delivers a full-length project, but this time, she narrowly missed the mark. Now, she and her partner are hoping for another shot at the summit.
Gomez and Blanco released the deluxe edition of I Said I Love You First, now retitled I Said I Love You First… And You Said It Back, on Friday (May 2). The expanded version was only announced a few days prior, so its arrival came as a bit of a surprise.
This updated edition includes several new tunes, as well as a handful of other additions. The album now featured a reworked version of 'Cowboy' with a verse by rapper GloRilla, a live take of 'How Does It Feel to Be Forgotten,' and an acoustic version of 'Call Me When You Break Up,' the lead single that also credits Gracie Abrams.
Fans quickly began buying I Said I Love You First… And You Said It Back once it became available. The title ranked among the highest-rising new entries on iTunes on Friday, at the beginning of the new tracking period. However, it didn't perform nearly as well as the original version when it dropped, which shot to No. 1 immediately. Gomez and Blanco's updated effort approached the top 10 on the list of the top-selling full-lengths on the platform, but struggled to actually break into that space.
This week, I Said I Love You First tumbles from No. 26 to No. 47 on the Billboard 200 in just its fifth frame on the tally. That's quite the drop for a project that received such heavy promotion. Such a descent does not bode well for the album's long-term success. That said, now that new music has been added to the now 20-plus track effort — up from the original 14 songs — there's a good chance the release will rebound on the Billboard charts next week…though exactly how high is yet to be seen.
Given that it's a relatively quiet frame, Gomez and Blanco stand a decent chance of soaring higher on the competitive Billboard 200. But reaching No. 1 seems like it's a real stretch – one that's likely not to be considered within reach. To seriously compete for the summit, the two musicians would need to sell a significant number of copies and see a sharp uptick in streams of the project. Most of the success would likely need to come from purchases, but many of Friday's other new arrivals outsold I Said I Love You First… And You Said It Back.
Chances are, the pair will have to settle for a solid gain — perhaps even a return to the top 20. The album will almost certainly remain Gomez's first full-length under her own name to miss the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.

Cynthia Erivo Teases Elphaba's ‘Rage' Ahead Of ‘Wicked: For Good' Trailer Drop

Partial teaser poster for "Wicked: For Good" featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Cynthia Erivo is talking about the changes she made for Elphaba in Wicked: For Good ahead of the release of the film's first trailer, which is set for Wednesday. Erivo, of course, was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar earlier this year, one of the 10 nods Wicked received including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande. Wicked won two Oscars at the 97th Academy Awards — for Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Lee Sandeles and Nathan Crowley. Wicked: For Good — the second film in the adaptation of the 2003 classic Broadway musical — is set for a Nov. 21 release. The first trailer for Wicked: For Good will premiere at a one-night-only screening event of Wicked in theaters on Wednesday, followed by the release of the teaser on YouTube, according to ABC's Good Morning America. In an interview Monday with Billboard about her new album I Forgive You, Erivo brought a bit of Wicked: For Good into the conversation. Considering that Elphaba is heading into the Wicked Witch of the West territory that fans know from the character's appearance in the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz, Erivo noted that there are dark times ahead for Glinda's former ally. 'She's able to access her rage more,' Erivo told Billboard. 'The scent I wore changed. The makeup changed. Little shifts that bring you to a more mature version of who Elphaba becomes. And she is delicious in this next one.' In addition to the film's awards season success, Wicked was a massive hit in theaters. Following the film's Nov. 22, 2024, release, Wicked went on to earn $473.2 million in North American theaters and nearly $282 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $755.2 million against a $145 million budget before prints and advertising, according to The Numbers. Wednesday's special screening of the film with the Wicked: For Good trailer drop will, of course, add to that number. In addition to the theatrical success of Wicked, the film also earned $100 million in digital streaming revenues via premium video on demand, Deadline reported in April. Wicked is currently streaming on Peacock and is still available to purchase or rent on PVOD. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good opens in theaters worldwide on Nov. 21.

Rosé Matches BTS's All-Time Billboard Record

Rosé's hit 'Apt.' with Bruno Mars ties BTS's 'Dynamite' for the second-longest Hot 100 run by a ... More K-pop artist, reaching 32 weeks. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 02: Rosé attends as Tiffany & Co. celebrates the debut of the Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams Collection at Tiffany & Co. Landmark on May 02, 2024 in New York City. (Photo byfor Tiffany & Co.) After Morgan Wallen inundated the Hot 100 last week with dozens of tracks from his new No. 1 album I'm the Problem, the tally becomes slightly less competitive this frame. Several of the country superstar's tunes decline, making more room toward the top for a handful of smashes that had been performing incredibly well, but which fell when the singer-songwriter invaded the list – but they are now regaining ground. Rosé's hit 'Apt.,' her hugely popular collaboration with Bruno Mars, is one such tune. It rises this frame as it makes space once more near the upper reaches of the ranking. As it does, the Blackpink singer ties the most successful group in K-pop history for a coveted spot in Billboard chart history. 'Apt.' has spent 32 weeks on the Hot 100. The smash is now matched with 'Dynamite' by BTS, which fell off the tally after 32 frames. It reaches that important milestone as it advances from No. 28 to No. 22 during a quieter period on the tally. Rosé's tune is now tied as the second-longest-charting track in U.S. history by a K-pop musician. Although originally from New Zealand, Rosé is closely associated with the K-pop style thanks to her career beginnings in Blackpink. Much of her output is at least partially related to that genre — including 'Apt.,' which features both English and Korean lyrics. Just last week, 'Apt.' was on the same level as 'Gangnam Style,' the first K-pop hit many Americans were familiar with. That track, which peaked at No. 2 more than a decade ago, racked up 31 stays on the Hot 100 and, for many years, reigned as the highest-charting and longest-lasting success by any K-pop artist in America. 'Apt.' now needs just one more frame to tie the all-time best showing by a K-pop star. That honor belongs to Jimin, one of the seven singers that make up BTS. He kept his tune 'Who' on the tally for 33 weeks, starting in mid-2024. While Jimin's track only climbed to No. 12, it remained on the list for months. Since 'Apt.' is still present just outside the top 20, it seems likely Rosé will match Jimin's showing — and may even beat it in time.

Weinstein Prosecutors Invoke His Former Power as N.Y. Retrial Nears End

When a prosecutor rose to make her closing argument at Harvey Weinstein's retrial on sex crimes charges on Tuesday, the Manhattan courtroom's televisions showed a picture of him clad in a smart black suit, on a red carpet, smiling with his hands spread before a throng of clamoring photographers. The image, taken at a star-studded gala at the Cannes Film Festival, captured the former Hollywood producer at the height of his power — power Mr. Weinstein used to sexually assault three women, the prosecutor, Nicole Blumberg, told the jury. He took private flights, had a personal driver and attended events with dignitaries and celebrities regularly. 'I want you to remember it's not the person sitting here today in the wheelchair,' Ms. Blumberg, a prosecutor with the Manhattan district attorney's office, said, pointing to the picture: 'It's that man.' Ms. Blumberg's statements, which continued on Wednesday, will be the last arguments the jury hears before beginning its deliberations over whether to convict him on two counts of a first-degree criminal sexual act and one count of third degree rape. It is the second time in five years that Mr. Weinstein, 73, has faced a Manhattan jury. The state's highest court overturned his a 2020 conviction on sex crimes charges last year.
