WestJet cyberattack will be investigated by Canada's privacy commissioner
The airline said in a statement last month that a 'sophisticated, criminal' third party was able to gain access to some personal and travel-related data during the June cybersecurity incident.
WestJet said the safety of its airline operations was never under threat.

A statement from the office of Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne says the investigation will look into the security safeguards that WestJet had in place at the time of the breach and the adequacy of its notifications to affected individuals.
It says the office is engaging with WestJet to ensure that it's taking appropriate steps to respond to the incident.
The statement says the immediate focus is to ensure that the company is 'effectively' addressing the breach and protecting its customers' personal information.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Tuesday the opening of a new migrant detention centre, coined the Speedway Slammer, that will house 1,000 inmates detained as part of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. The Indiana-based facility, built in partnership with the state Department of Corrections, will hold 'some of the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens arrested by ICE,' the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on Tuesday. U.S. man arrested trying to illegally enter Canada by kayak: police
Police in the Ontario town of LaSalle say they arrested a man from the U.S. trying to illegally enter Canada by kayak early Wednesday morning. LaSalle Police Service said an officer encountered the man shortly before 1 a.m. while conducting commercial property checks near the Detroit River. 'While checking the rear of a business, (the officer) saw a man at the water's edge of the Detroit River with two backpacks and a kayak,' a police statement said. 'The officer investigated and discovered the man was attempting to illegally enter Canada.' Police said the 51-year-old man was detained and turned over to the RCMP for further investigation. The man was already within Canada's boundary when he was detained. The Detroit River serves as a marine border between Ontario and Michigan. The Ambassador Bridge, which is nine km away from where the man was arrested, serves as an economic and tourist connector between Windsor and Detroit. A new connector, the Georgie Howe International Bridge, opened last year just south of the Ambassador Bridge. 'This is an outstanding example demonstrating that proactive police work can yield unintended positive outcomes,' LaSalle Police Chief Michael Pearce said in a statement. 'While conducting a simple property check, I'm confident our officer did not expect to find someone trying to illegally enter Canada.'

Arson team investigating house fire in southeast Calgary
The Calgary Fire Department's arson investigation team has been called in to try and determine the cause of a fire that damaged a home on Legacy Reach View in southeast Calgary early Wednesday morning. Firefighters were called out to the home around 5 a.m. When they arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and forced their way into the home, where they discovered a deceased dog. View image in full screen The Calgary fire department said they found a deceased dog inside a home on fire on Wednesday. Global News A CFD spokesperson told Global News that no people were home at the time, but fire crews were able to speak with someone who was believed to be looking after the home and it appears they were able to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived. Story continues below advertisement Global News cameras also captured a person being detained by police, but there's no word on whether the person is connected to the incident. 'My husband told me he saw police put someone (on the ground), we didn't know if they were arresting him or what happened,' Mehta said. 'There was lots of fire department (vehicles) here, lots of police here, the neighbours had a little dog.' Mehta and other people who live on the street say the family that lives in the home is currently out of the country. 'I always see them and their dog out, they take their dog for walks with my son. They're nice people.' Residents of several nearby homes were also temporarily forced to evacuate. So far, there's no word on what caused the fire.
