The Miami Marlins have been rebuilding for the last few years, and their roster is already looking a bit better. Still, they hold onto the most valuable player on the team, pitcher Sandy Alcántara.
Alcántara has been linked to a lot of trade rumors since returning from Tommy John surgery, but the Marlins opted to keep him at the trade deadline.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently predicted the Marlins would finally trade Alcántara during the upcoming offseason after holding onto him at the trade deadline.
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - AUGUST 15: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Boston Red Sox during the first inning at Fenway Park on August 15, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts.
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - AUGUST 15: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins pitches against the Boston Red Sox during the first inning at Fenway Park on August 15, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts."Here's a fun fact: Alcantara's FIP prior to Friday night's gem in Boston was 4.55, exactly the same as what he posted in 2019 when he was named an All-Star for the first time," Miller wrote. "Granted, that ASG honor was a 'someone from this 105-loss disaster needs to make the team' situation, but it was also the beginning of his rise to stardom.
"And the fielder independent data suggests he has pitched equally well this season. ERA sure paints a different story, but at least he has been healthy. Couple that with the notion that his bad luck won't last forever and Alcantara is a phenomenal buy-low candidate."
It seems like the Marlins' idea to keep Alcántara has more to do with allowing him to increase his trade value than it does anything else.
The Marlins will likely cut ties with Alcántara in the coming months, as it would net Miami another solid return of prospects to continue the rebuild in the right direction.
There's still likely a lot of interest in the talented former Cy Young winner, which the Marlins will look to take advantage of in the offseason.

Caitlin Clark misses another practice as Fever call her prospect of return 'status quo'

Two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark missed another practice with her injured right groin Wednesday, and coach Stephanie White still does not have a timetable for her star's return. Clark has not played since hurting her groin in the final minute of a game July 15 at Connecticut. Three different muscle injuries this season have forced Clark to sit out 22 games including the last 13 — and All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. The worst part: White is simply hoping Clark returns for some of her team's last nine regular-season games. Indiana also lost three other key players with season-ending injuries over the last two weeks. 'Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it's really status quo,' White said after Wednesday's workout at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark never missed a game in college and played in every Fever game last season when she won the WNBA's Rookie of the Year Award. Indiana spent the offseason going all-in on putting a stronger supporting cast around the former Iowa star and those moves appear to have paid off by keeping the Fever in playoff position without Clark and the rest. But Clark still has a role with the Fever. 'Caitlin's still there, like that hasn't wavered,' All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell said. 'And I think even though they're not in the lineup, we still feel everyone's presence.' ___ AP WNBA:

HoopsHype ranks Houston's Kevin Durant at No. 2 among NBA small forwards

The Christmas Day showdown between the Rockets and Lakers will feature the NBA's top-two small forwards of the 2025-26 season, according to HoopsHype's latest rankings. In HoopsHype's rankings of expected production for the 2025-26 NBA season, the Houston Rockets have Fred VanVleet at No. 17 among point guards and Amen Thompson at No. 7 among shooting guards. They're even higher than that at small forward, and it's largely why the Rockets have emerged as a championship contender. Kevin Durant, who earned his 15th career All-Star honor last season, checks in at No. 2 on the small-forward rankings. HoopsHype's explanation: For how much things change in the NBA, sometimes, they also stay the same, and these next two players are a great example of that. Even with the NBA's always-shifting strategies based on analytics, somehow, someway, Kevin Durant and LeBron James remain the best small forwards in basketball, in our estimation. Last season, Durant was one of just six players to put up a 26/6/4 stat line, and did so while shooting an astronomical 43 percent from three. According to VORP and BPM, Durant was roughly a Top 30 player in the league. Can he still be the best player on a championship team? We're about to find out, as Durant joins a strong Houston team replete with players that have either championship experience like Fred VanVleet, or have loads of promise like Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. Joining a well-rounded team with toughness and skill on both ends of the floor, if Durant is still an All-NBA-level player and a ceiling raiser for a team, he should be able to prove it in 2025-26... as he won't be forced to endure as much of the two-way load as he did with the Phoenix Suns. The only small forward ranked ahead of Durant is James, and the two future Hall of Famers will face off on Christmas Day in a primetime showdown between the Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. Houston (52-30) and Los Angeles (50-32) finished as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in last season's Western Conference standings, and both teams are hopeful of more growth in 2025-26 amid the first full season of Luka Doncic with the Lakers and Durant's recent arrival in Houston. Did NASCAR's 2026 Schedule Just Leak? New Year Features Surprising Twists

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The NASCAR 2026 schedule, featuring 38 races, has reportedly been shared by The Athletic and includes several major changes. The new year is set for more circuit replacements, while two venues that featured this year won't be returning in 2026. The new season begins on February 1st at the Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and ends on November 8th at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida. Speaking of the circuits that have been excluded from the 2026 schedule, Mexico City's Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has been removed, along with the Chicago street race, which has been paused for a year. The return of Chicagoland Speedway next year replaces the street race. The most prominent track addition to NASCAR's 2026 schedule is the new race at San Diego's Coronado Naval Base. Another change includes the return of North Wilkesboro Speedway's short track to the regular season, as Dover's one-mile concrete oval is set to take over as the host of the non-championship All-Star Race. Homestead-Miami replaces the playoff finale race at Phoenix. Notably, the short-track showcase inside the Los Angeles Coliseum, which was added a few years ago, won't be returning in 2026.
