Hike in foreign investment in the country sees hundreds of jobs created in North Wales
North Wales is benefitting as the number of foreign direct investment projects in Wales grew significantly in the last financial year - creating and safeguarding more than 4,100 jobs. Wales secured 65 projects in 2024-25, a 23% increase on the previous financial year.
This was the second highest increase of any nation or region of the UK. It compares with a 12% year-on-year decline in the number of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the UK overall.
The investments include the promise of 2,470 new jobs being created, a 30% increase compared to 2023-24. Again, this was the second highest increase of any nation or region across the UK.
The results have been published by the Department for Business and Trade in its annual report on foreign direct investments in the UK.
A total of 1,652 jobs were also safeguarded in Wales – the highest number of all nations and regions. As well as new investments into Wales from overseas firms, the figures also include expansion projects by foreign companies already located here.
Historically, particularly under the former Welsh Development Agency, which was disbanded by the Welsh Government back in 2004, Wales had attracted more than 10% of all inward investment into the UK.
Investments in the last year include at Shotton Mill Ltd, which is owned by Turkish corporate Eren Holdings.
The North East Wales-based company will become the UK's largest paper-manufacturing campus thanks to a £1bn redevelopment. Supported by £13m Welsh Government funding, it will see 147 jobs safeguarded and create a further 220 when fully commissioned.
Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: "Despite political and economic factors impacting growth globally, Wales has again seen a significant increase in foreign investment.
'There has been a large increase in jobs created through FDI in 2024-25 and the continuing growth of 'new' investment into Wales has reached a nine-year high.
'This is proof that our proactive approach to promoting Wales globally as a great place to do business is delivering. From Delhi to San Diego we have further raised the profile of Wales as an outstanding investment destination with key sectors that boast world class capabilities.'
First Minister Eluned Morgan said: "Creating high quality jobs in key sectors is a priority for this government, and attracting overseas investment is a key part of our economic strategy.
"We are focused as a government on economic growth, and these figures highlight the confidence investors are showing in the Welsh economy. Our International Investment Summit later this year will provide a further opportunity to showcase Wales to the world and attract even more investment into Wales."

The industrial action in Cardiff was supposed to take place from August 17 and was due to run for three weeks, ending on Sunday, September 7. The strike actionby 450 Unite members working for Cardiff Bus was due to an ongoing dispute over pay conditions. The bus service is the primary bus provider for the Welsh capital and its surrounding areas like Barry and Penarth. If it went forward the industrial action would have fallen on days of major events in the city like gigs by Tom Jones, Will Smith, and Basement Jaxx at Cardiff Castle. Working conditions were also a major bone of contention among union members as Unite alleged that timetabling issues left workers unable to take proper breaks and staff often faced long walking times to reach the break facilities. In a previous update, Cardiff Bus had said it had offered to raise the pay rates by 5.86% but union members had rejected the offer as it left drivers below levels in the rest of the UK. Unite will now be holding another ballot on the revised proposal, which will take place from August 15 to August 29. The union has confirmed all strike dates are currently on hold as the bus company has now put forth an "improved pay offer" to its members and has also proposed changes to working conditions. These changes include longer breaks and improved sickness terms. Unite regional secretary Peter Hughes said: "Cardiff Bus has returned to negotiations and put an improved offer on the table. "Unite has therefore suspended strike action to allow members to be balloted on the proposals." Bosses at Cardiff Bus are now urging workers taking part in the ballot to accept their revised pay offer. Craig Hampton-Stone, managing director of Cardiff Bus, said: "We were pleased to hear of the suspension of the planned industrial action from Sunday to allow for another workplace ballot to be undertaken. "I would urge all taking part in the ballot to accept the latest revised offer." Cardiff Bus has confirmed that its usual services will continue. South Belfast to get new hotel and leisure development, while Ballymena gets bowling alley
Permission was granted for the 164-bedroom Andras House hotel, which will have a ground floor bar and restaurant at the junction of Botanic Avenue and Donegall Pass. The site for the new hotel is currently used as a surface level car park and retail and office unit. Andras House acquired the site at Botanic Avenue in 2023 for £1.7m and last year it confirmed it is to develop a 164-room hotel for YOTEL, a London-based hotel firm. The project is estimated to be worth £17m. The Planning Committee also approved an application for change of use from office space and storage at Adelaide Business Centre. It will become a leisure development with bowling alley, restaurant, indoor golf, children's soft play, VR zone and amusements, with parking at the site. MK5 Ltd first unveiled plans for the leisure complex in 2022 after buying the Adelaide Business Centre on Apollo Road in Belfast for £1.35m. MK5 is owned by Patrick Simpson, the developer behind Londonderry's Brunswick Moviebowl leisure complex. Planning documents show that the estimated investment in the new project, in addition to the £1.35m to acquire the site, will be around £3m, with the businesses expected to create about 30 jobs. Permission was also given for the erection of a drive through café at lands near Lidl supermarket and Olympia Leisure Centre on the Boucher Road. Other applications approved were a council application for street art on the façade of the former Belfast Telegraph building in Royal Avenue at Donegall Street. Councillor Ryan Murphy, Chair of Belfast City Council's Planning Committee, said: 'It's further good news for tourists and visitors to Belfast to have another major hotel development approved, this time — in the Botanic area. 'This new hotel will be close to shops, bars and restaurants and other local visitor attractions like Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum. 'It's also walking distance to the city centre and close to Botanic station which provides public transport links to the wider city and beyond including Lanyon Place and St George's Market and Titanic Quarter and SSE Arena and Titanic Belfast, among other great attractions. 'The Planning Committee also approved a new leisure complex on the Apollo Road, Boucher, with bowling alley, soft children's play area and indoor golf which is fantastic news for residents and families in the city.' Meanwhile, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has granted planning permission for a new bowling alley at a cinema complex in Ballymena. A proposal by applicant Carngore Ltd of Thomas Street, Ballymena, for renovations and an extension to the IMC Cinema to accommodate a 12-lane bowling alley and amusement centre has been given the go-ahead. A planning report noted the premises at St Patrick's Link Road are located just outside Ballymena in 'an established leisure area' adjacent to the Seven Towers Leisure Centre. The report said: 'The proposal is to change the use of two existing cinema rooms to provide an amusement area, further change of the existing lobby area and small extension to provide a bowling alley. 'Given the established leisure nature of the site and distance from any residential development, it is considered that there will be no impact on residential amenity or human health and well-being." The report stated that NI Water has recommended refusal. However, there is no proposed change to the existing water and sewerage facilities. 'Given the extensive parking on-site and adjacent at Seven Towers Leisure Centre, there is no need for any additional parking or traffic assessments.' There is no amendment to the access, it was noted.

Nestled among foliage on a hill is a property in Swansea that's on the market for £450,000. That's more than double the £212,427 average house price in Wales' second city based on homes sold over the last year, according to property website Rightmove. It's been empty for years. Roof slates are missing, the wooden decking is past its best, and nature is reclaiming the plot in a profusion of greenery. But the property is in Mumbles where average house prices were £325,058 over the past 12 months, said Rightmove, with detached ones like the one in question selling for an average of £518,500. Cllr Thomas, one of three councillors representing the seaside ward, said he wanted Mumbles to be attractive for all residents and particularly young families to help keep the schools busy. "A lot of Airbnb properties are up for sale since new Welsh Government policies and the 200% council tax in Swansea [for second homes]," he said. The estate agents marketing it described Cairnside as a "hidden gem" on a large plot which could be renovated or knocked down and replaced with a new house subject to the necessary permissions. As well as nearby shops and restaurants Blue Flag swimming beach Langland is within walking distance and beyond that lies Caswell. Mumbles bar owner Harry Gillies said the former fishing village was a great place to call home. "It's fantastic – everything is on your doorstep," he said. "But there is a bit of a problem with parking." Mr Gillies, the owner of Harry's Bar in Newton Road, said: "It's very busy at the minute. My bar is doing well." Average salaries in Swansea were £34,871 in April 2024, based on an annual survey of earnings by the Office of National Statistics, making an average Mumbles property more than nine times the average wage. But for those fortunate enough to buy a place there the pull is as strong as ever. "Mumbles has always been a sought-after location thanks to its coastal charm, vibrant community, and excellent local amenities but in recent years we have seen demand grow even further," said Ricky Purdy, business partner at Dawsons estate agents, which isn't marketing the Western Lane house. "The new promenade has enhanced the seafront experience, creating a stunning space for walking, cycling, and enjoying the views while the area's restaurants, cafés, and independent shops continue to thrive." He added: "It's not just the sales market that sees the allure of Mumbles – our lettings team also see a high demand in those wishing to rent too."
