BBC sacked John Torode ‘for using the worst racial slur'

Telegraph17-07-2025
John Torode was sacked from MasterChef for using 'the worst racial slur there is', Richard Osman has claimed.
Osman made the claim in his podcast, The Rest Is Entertainment, during a discussion about the exit of Torode and his co-presenter Gregg Wallace from the BBC show.
The presenter and author also alleged that Banijay, the makers of MasterChef, had offered Torode a second chance if he took a year off, but the Australian chef had declined.
Speaking on the podcast, Osman said: 'On this particular occasion, it's not 'woke gone mad'. You know, he used, I think, probably the worst racial slur there is. And they found it to be substantively true.
'They found evidence that they were happy with, that was true.
'He is saying, 'I definitely didn't do it, I certainly can't remember it.' But that one was upheld.'
Osman also alleged that 'all sorts' of complaints had been raised about Torode during the course of Banijay's investigation into the show, but they were not upheld 'because they couldn't say for certain they believed it happened'.
The Telegraph understands Torode was the subject of multiple allegations, although only one was substantiated.
Torode has been contacted for comment. Banijay UK declined to comment.
Torode was sacked on Tuesday after he was drawn into the investigation into Gregg Wallace's conduct.
Banijay said that the review, conducted by law firm Lewis Silkin, had substantiated an accusation of 'highly offensive racist language'. Torode is alleged to have made the remark during after-show drinks in 2018.
The BBC said Torode had used 'an extremely offensive racist term' in the workplace. 'We will not tolerate racist language of any kind,' the corporation said.
Torode maintained: 'I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened.'
After being sacked, he said: 'I'd hoped that I'd have had some say in my exit from a show that I've worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in the last few days seem to have prevented that.'
ITV is standing by Torode at present, saying it will continue to show the Saturday morning programme John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen, which he presents with his wife, Lisa Faulkner, an actress and the 2010 winner of Celebrity MasterChef.
Meanwhile, the future of MasterChef is now in limbo. Two series that have been filmed may never be aired if the BBC decides it would be inappropriate to show them.
Wallace has threatened to sue the BBC and Banijay for discrimination, claiming that they should have taken more care of him on set because of his autism.

Gregg Wallace launches private chat room just for middle-aged men in desperate bid to keep earning after MasterChef sacking

Gregg Wallace has launched a private middle-aged male only chat room for £11.99 a month in his latest attempt to keep earning money following the MasterChef scandal. The TV personality, 60, was recently sacked from the BBC show following allegations of inappropriate behaviour. More than 40 complaints against him were upheld following a BBC investigation. Daily Mail revealed earlier this month Gregg is urgently plotting a 'survival plan' after the BBC told him it had 'no plans to work with him in future' leaving his television career in tatters. As part of his remodeling as a fitness guru, he's selling a subscription for men to join his Healthy Fifty plan. Gregg promises: 'A private chat room for men over 50. Real talk, real support – hosted by Gregg Wallace. Fitness, food, lifestyle, laughs. Sign up below and pop in to say hello.' The venture is illustrated by a photo of a laughing group of middle-aged men sat in a pub drinking pints of beer. It's a contrast to Gregg's comments last year when he hit out at 'middle class women of a certain age'. The celebrity presenter apologised for 'any offence I caused' after his controversial comments on Instagram. It's not the first online subscription Gregg has set up to earn the funds as he recently launched his new career as PT just weeks ago after he lost five stone three years ago. Gregg announced he is personally training clients to improve their 'wellness' for the £200 a month fee. In a video posted to Instagram, he explained: 'You do not have to accept decline as a part of getting older. You can do something about this. You can be leaner, fitter, healthier, [and] have more energy.' Gregg continued: 'I went on my own wellness journey and I am healthier at 60 than I was at 30. I coach people over 50. I help them feel better and look better and have more confidence. 'If you would like to speak to me about your own health journey, leave me a message here.' Earlier this month, sources close to Gregg said he has vowed to relaunch himself independently on a string of digital platforms. Gregg is desperate to keep earning, having been side-lined since last year following a raft of allegations about his inappropriate behaviour on set at MasterChef. It's not the first online subscription Gregg has set up to earn the funds as he recently launched his new career as PT just weeks ago after he lost five stone three years ago Gregg is desperate to keep earning, having been side-lined since last year following a raft of allegations about his inappropriate behaviour on set at MasterChef A report substantiated 45 of the 83 allegations against him, and the BBC informed the star that it had no intention of working with him in the future. He is now frantically seeking a new agent and planning a return to the spotlight using social media to air self-made content about food and healthy living – having watched others succeed after losing their mainstream TV work. Gregg is said to fear financial ruin, having seen several of his businesses forced into administration with mammoth debts and he has previously admitted 'losing everything' was the worst experience of his life. The father-of-three, who has had three costly divorces from his ex-wives, now lives in a five-bedroom farmhouse in Kent alongside three generations of his family, including his wife Anne-Marie Sterpini, in-laws and young son who has autism – but has 'never been great with money' according to those who know him. As one insider said: 'He really should take a break from the spotlight and work out for himself what has gone wrong, he might learn a bit about himself and start to recognise the mistakes he has made, but all he can think about right now is how to keep the cash rolling in.' 'Money is clearly at the very forefront of his mind – much more so than whether this is actually his own fault. 'He's telling people he needs to get straight back to work whatever it takes for financial reasons, and seems to think he can follow in the footsteps of other people who have lost prominent jobs in mainstream TV and go it alone. His biggest fear is losing everything he has worked so hard for and going bust. 'He also wants to get himself a new agent pretty quickly to land some commercial deals – he's had big endorsement arrangements in the past which have paid a fortune, but it's hard to imagine any big brand wanting to snap him up at the moment.' Instead he is widely expected to ramp up his content on YouTube and TikTok as he pursues other revenue streams outside of mainstream broadcasting.

CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews last night's TV: No scheming, no scenery, no risk... Brydon's travel game has no point

Destination X (BBC1) The Beatles didn't invent the mystery tour. A century ago, holidaymakers were paying their pound for a ride to some surprise seaside town in an open–topped bus called a charabanc. Rob Brydon is attempting to update the tradition in Destination X, taking 13 travellers and sending them off who–knows–where in a luxury coach. To win the game, and £100,000, all they have to do is guess where they are. But the fun of an old–fashioned mystery tour lies in the sights and discoveries along the way. Rob has ruined it by making sure nobody, including the viewers, has a clue what country they're in, let alone what the views are like. The coach windows are blacked out. When the players do step outside, they wear electronic goggles that allow them only the briefest of glimpses. In one of the show's many ill–judged twists, there are miniature cameras inside the goggles, so we can see the contestants' eyeballs staring around blindly. At one point, all goggled up, they were loaded onto helicopters and whirled around the countryside. This exercise in sensory deprivation and disorientation made me feel queasy, just watching it. But I'd rather go flying in a blindfold than spend a night on the claustrophobic Destination X dormitory coach, fitted out with narrow bunkbeds along a narrow corridor, like the cabins in a submarine. 'I hope people have got good hygiene,' worried 22–year–old Mahdi, the youngest player. The following morning, he packed his suitcase and quit the game. Let's pray it was just the snoring he couldn't stand. The game began with a blizzard of feints and fakery that seemed to have no real point. The players arrived at an airport in Baden–Baden that was clearly not real: the baggage counter was between the duty–free shop and the boarding gate, with not a customs officer in sight. Most of the 'passengers' were extras, who stood up on a signal and walked out together. More artificial still, the actors playing airport staff were chosen because they had identical twins – so that similar faces could pop up at different places along the route. By now, Destination X, which continues tonight, was starting to resemble an art 'happening', and it didn't get any less contrived when the players were herded into a box in the middle of a provincial town, somewhere in Central Europe. Every so often, a slot like a letterbox opened and the travellers crowded round trying to spy clues. Brydon, parading in a double–breasted blazer like a Pontins holiday rep, did his best to inject some laughs, but his script didn't have one memorable line. If the Beeb was trying to combine The Traitors with Race Across The World, it's succeeded - but only by losing the best bits from both shows. There's no skulduggery, no sensational scenery, no jeopardy, no excitement and no point.

Love Island fans slam 'worst' talent show in villa history as baffling segment sees Helena 'read' while Yasmin shows off her posture

Love Island fans branded Wednesday night's talent show the 'worst' in villa history as the baffling segment saw Helena read while Yasmin showed off her posture. Over the years ITV2 viewers have been treated to classics like Indiyah Polack 's recorder playing, Chris Hughes and Kem Cetinay 's impressive rapping and Millie Court 's piano performance. But it seems this year's Islanders had little to offer with no musical talents on offer for the 'Love Island band.' Taking to the stage for the performance fans saw hula hooping, a magic trick, juggling and Blu hit the deck when his boxing talent took an unfortunate turn. Cach kicked things off as he showed off his dance moves, whilst Yas balanced a book on her head. Helena then delivered a flight-themed roast aimed at her co-stars, but fans were left confused and questioned if her talent was just 'reading from a script.' Giving their verdict on X, fans slammed the lack of talent and shared their disappointment over none of the Islander's being able to play an instrument. They wrote: 'Omg this series has got to be the worst in love island history what kind of talent show is this?'; 'Where is my annual musical talent that inevitably endears me to the islander? 'The final week of love island is when it becomes unbearable to watch, because no I don't want to see Dejon forcing everyone to lift kettle bells in the name of talent'; 'After watching the talent show can see why they are on Love Island...'; 'I don't think we'll be adding to the love island band tonight. Not a single musical talent.'; 'This is a talent show not a career fair'; 'The talent show is the biggest ick known to man'; 'This is the worst talent show of the season.' Earlier in the episode, Love Island viewers were left shocked as the girls proved the divide was still well and truly in place. Called the biggest divide in the show's history, the entire series has centred around the ongoing feud between the two groups of girls: Shakira, Toni and Yas versus Meg and Helena. The Islanders continued to take part in the tense Couple Goals challenge - but when the Islanders were asked 'Which couple are you most scared to give your honest opinion on?' shockwaves were sent through the Villa. Cach kicked things off as he showed off his dance moves, whilst Yas balanced a book on her head Giving their verdict on X, fans slammed the lack of talent and shared their disappointment over none of the Islander's being able to play an instrument Shakira and Harry chose Meg and Dejon, which did not go down well. 'I think if people were honest in the first place and told us to our faces instead of saying it constantly behind our back, it would be a different story,' Meg raged. Shakira responded: 'You throwing around the fake word is rich to be honest. I don't know why you keep acting like we're the best of mates in here. 'From day one, you were very standoffish with any girl that was posed as a threat.' 'I think you've called every single person in this Villa fake,' Meg bit back, to which Shakira said: 'No, I will never pretend to be your mate.' Meg interrupted 'You won't be my friend on the outside' before Shakira said: 'I will never speak to you on the outside. I honestly can't stand you sometimes.' But that wasn't all because when it comes to Meg and Dejon's turn to answer, both Meg and Blu become embroiled in a back and forth with Toni before Blu brands Toni a 'pick-me girl'. The chaos came just two episodes after Toni brought the girls around the firepit to try and bridge the divide and call a truce.
