Ex-Utah Jazz coach Frank Layden dies at 93
Layden died Wednesday. His cause of death was not disclosed.
"Frank Layden made a lasting impact on the Jazz, the state of Utah, and the NBA," the Jazz said in a statement. "There will never be another like him. Our thoughts go out to his family as we join in mourning his loss and celebrating his life. Rest easy, coach."
Layden coached at Niagara from 1968 to 1976. He went on to become an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks, a role he held from 1976 to 1979. Jazz hired Layden as their general manager in 1979. He became head coach in 1981.
Layden, who helped draft Hall of Famers Karl Malone and John Stockton, led the Jazz to a 277-294 record over eight seasons, including a 45-37 mark in 1983-84, when they made their first playoff run.
The Jazz made the playoffs five-consecutive times from 1983-84 through 1987-1988. Layden earned Coach of the Year, Executive of the Year and the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1984. Layden retired from coaching during the 1988-89 season.
Layden became an honorary assistant coach for the Continental Basketball Association's Utah Eagles in 2006. He served as head coach of the Women's National Basketball Association's Utah Starzz from 1998 through 1999.
"It's hard to imagine the story of the Utah Jazz without the presence of Frank Layden," Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith said. "He was an amazing person who meant so much to this organization and to our fans.
"His love of the sport was felt around the NBA, and he set the franchise on a course for success, helping to build an enduring legacy for the state of Utah."

NBA teases OKC Thunder 2025-26 City Edition jersey announcement
Teasing their arrival, the NBA showed a glimpse of what the 2025-26 City Edition uniforms could look like. From what they posted on social media, they will have a throwback approach by bringing back a fan-favorite classic for each team. The NBA posted a graphic where each number and letter in "2025-26 NBA & Nike City Edition Remix" was replaced with a font of an NBA team's previous City Edition jersey. For the Oklahoma City Thunder, the "k" in Nike was in the same font as their infamous 2018-19 Native American heritage tribute jersey. It served as the Thunder's City Edition uniform in the final year of the Russell Westbrook and Paul George era. The fan favorite always gets mentioned among the best OKC jerseys. From some social media rumors, it looks like the font and design remain the same, but in a different color than teal. It looks like the NBA champion will bring it back —with some slight tweaks — for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren to wear in the 2025-26 season. We'll see when the NBA announces the City Edition uniforms for next season. It's one of the bigger news items of August. Everybody is also waiting for the 2025-26 regular season schedule, which should happen sometime this month.

Sixers rookie VJ Edgecombe reveals he already has a rival in the NBA
Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe is looking to make an impact in the league as the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. He is joining a Sixers team looking to up the tempo in the 2025-26 season led by the handful of younger guards on the roster. As Edgecombe prepares to enter the NBA, he will be joining a Sixers team that does have championship expectations as long as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey are healthy. Edgecombe can make an impact on this roster with his athleticism, high basketball IQ, and ability to make big plays on the defensive end. He showed a glimpse of that in the summer league. With that being said, it appears Edgecombe already has a rival in the form of Indiana Pacers forward Bennedict Mathurin as he stated on "Podcast P with Paul George": I was at Euro camp, I won MVP. After all that, Bennedict Mathuring gonna come up to me talking about when you get to league I'm gonna bust ya ass. I'm like alright bro…He didn't even say what's up. He's like yeah I'm a bust ya ass. I'm like damn, where the love at? Edgecombe will look to make an impact in the NBA right away. While he may not start just yet under coach Nick Nurse, he will certainly get a look in the rotation as he brings a lot of skills the Sixers need at this point in time.

Trans darts star speaks out after women's rule change
Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Dutch transgender darts champion Noa-Lynn van Leuven spoke out after her sport's international governing body released a new gender-eligibility policy that bans trans women from women's competitions. The World Darts Federation released its new policy Monday. "This decision does affect me personally -- though, thankfully, not too severely at this point in time. But still, it hurts," she said on Instagram. "Once again, it's a loss for the trans community in sports. And that breaks my heart. "As a trans person in the darts world, I know how vital inclusion is - not just on paper, but in practice. It's disheartening to see yet another policy framed around 'fairness' that ultimately results in exclusion, without truly considering the people behind the labels. "My heart goes out to all the athletes impacted by this. We remain visible. We keep going." Opinions in darts remain divided, Darts World posted. "From what's been seen online, a significant portion of darts fans appear to support the WDF's position -- viewing the inclusion of trans throwers such as Van Leuven in the women's game as an unfair advantage." The rule change states that entry and participation in the federation's women's and girls ranking tournaments and cups will only be open to players who were "recorded female at birth." Under this policy, trans women are ineligible, and trans men are eligible as long as they are not undergoing hormone treatment. All trans women and trans men are eligible to compete in the open category. Van Leuven, a star who has won several women's titles in the sport, will be banned from WDF's women's tournaments under the new guidelines, effective immediately. In a statement announcing the change, the federation said the decision followed a vote at the WDF General Meeting in September where the majority of its members voted in favor of limiting participation in women's and girls tournaments to those assigned female at birth.
