Traditional wooden boat racing season begins in Krishna river waters

1 2 Kolhapur: Hundreds of excited spectators lined the banks of the Krishna river at the Sarkari Ghat section on Sunday, cheering wildly as their favorite teams raced in the annual Hodyanchya Sharyati—a wooden boat competition. The roar of the crowd only quieted when Tarun Maratha Mandal surged past the finish line, clocking in at 42 minutes. Hodyanchya Sharyati is unique to parts of Sangli and Kolhapur, where the Krishna river flows. This was the third of more than 20 races to be held this season and was also organised by Sankalp Foundation. The competition offered a cash prize of Rs31,000 to the team that raced to victory. The competition is a tradition observed for at least a century and starts from the month of Shravan. "Our foundation organised the boating race for the first time ever. Earlier, we used to compete in the races. In our event, 12 clubs participated. The laps totaling 2.5km had to be completed. The first boat finished in 42 minutes. The racers require top-notch stamina, and they also require to practice hard to ensure that they at least last for an hour. Since strength and tactics are involved, the govt must consider the Hodyanchya Sharyati as a sport and ensure the welfare of the players," said Shantinath Kare, organiser. In each boat there are six players and practice for the race starts three to four months prior to the event. Each season continues for over three to four months. Krishna river waters offer unique conditions favouring the boat race. or example, the waters are wide and deep, but the flow is slow. This tests the strength of the players, who have to continuously row the boat until the finish line. The next boat racing event will take place at Ichalkaranji in the waters of the Panchaganga river on the coming Saturday. Teams arriving from distant places will get Rs1,000 each for participating, said the organiser.
