Hall of Fame trainer Lukas dies aged 89

Lukas died on Saturday evening and a statement from his family on www.churchilldowns.com read: 'It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of legendary Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
'Wayne dedicated his life to Thoroughbred racing—not only through his unmatched success on the track, but through his impact on the people within it. He shaped generations of horsemen and horsewomen, and helped grow the sport with his passion, vision, and leadership.
'Whether he was touting a promising two-year-old or quietly offering advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every part of the game.
'At this time, we ask you to please join us in a moment of silence to honour the memory of D. Wayne Lukas.'
Lukas, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, won the Kentucky Derby four times among his 15 Triple Crown race wins and had 20 victories at the Breeders' Cup, a record matched only by Aidan O'Brien.
It had already been announced that long-serving assistant, Englishman Sebastian 'Bas' Nicholl will take over the running of his stable.

Russell Martin explains Rangers changes as one out injured

The pair were dropped from the side after the disappointment of drawing with Motherwell and featured off the bench against Viktoria Plzen and Dundee. However, the manager was pleased with their contribution in those games and both are back in from the start for tonight's second leg against the Czechs. Max Aarons has also picked up a knock which is a factor in Tavernier playing, with Martin revealing the Bournemouth loanee was unavailable tonight but will be back to face Alloa Athletic on Saturday. He told BBC Scotland: "I think that is the right team to play tonight to win the game. Nico was fantastic when he came on Saturday, as was Tav, had a big moment for us and executed it. Read more: "Max picked up a little bit of a knock before the game on Saturday and got through it as best as he could, but it's actually set him back a little bit. "So he'll be fit for the weekend, but there was no point in bringing him to travel and he's now got a bit of time to recover now. So Tav and Nico really helped the team on Saturday and they're in tonight." As well as Aarons, the other player to drop out is midfielder Joe Rothwell. After initially partnering Raskin, the Englishman was preferred for recent games but has now been taken out. "He's come in, he's done great," Martin explained. "He's looked a bit tired on Saturday and we've just gone for energy. So we have two really good options there. They might end up on the pitch together at some point tonight. "But yeah, he's done great, but it's now Nico's turn and I've said that no one gets dropped, just be ready at any moment. And Tav and Nico have been really good in their response, so now Joe needs to do the same."

Shaun Murphy: Triple Crown events head and shoulders above Saudi Arabia Masters

Shaun Murphy feels the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters is still some way behind the more traditional Triple Crown events in standing, saying: 'You can't buy legacy.' The tournament is in just its second year, being played in Jeddah this week after a move from the first edition in Riyadh last season. The event boasts an enormous prize fund which is only just shy of the World Championship and offers the same £500,000 winner's cheque as the Crucible. With a 10-year deal in place and the whopping prize pot, the Saudi Arabia Masters has been dubbed the 'fourth major' by World Snooker Tour, putting it alongside the World Championship, UK Championship and Masters. Many fans are not entirely impressed with a brand new event being lumped in with the three most prestigious tournaments on the calendar, but the substantial investment from Saudi Arabia has bought the 'fourth major' tag. However, despite the big money on offer, Murphy does not see the Saudi Arabia Masters as on a par with any of the Triple Crown events just yet, believing history and legacy cannot be matched just by cash. 'I've still got one foot in the history camp,' Murphy told Metro. 'I still think the history and the legacy of the existing three majors, the Triple Crown events, I think they're stand alone events. 'This event obviously rivals the World Championship in terms of prize money and it's a 10-year deal, so it's got the potential to become in great standing, but at the moment, for me, the other three would still be ahead of this one, despite the prize money.' He added: 'You can't buy legacy. The prize money here is massive and we're all enjoying competing and somebody is going to walk away with £500,000 this week, it's an amazing opportunity and we're all very grateful for it. 'But the legacy and how special the Triple Crown events are, you can't buy that. For me, those events are head and shoulders above everything else.' Murphy got his campaign in Jeddah off to a very good start on Tuesday with a 5-1 win over the in-form Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, who had made a 147 earlier in the tournament. In a packed session which featured eight top 16 players, the match was confined to table eight, which was not able to be watched in the UK, but the Magician didn't mind that his tricks were not on show. 'I couldn't care less what table I play on, I'm delighted just to play snooker, whether it's table one or table 10,' he said. 'When you look at the people in competition this afternoon with Judd, Mark [Selby], Neil [Robertson], Stuart Bingham, John Higgins, everybody's got to go somewhere! It doesn't matter what table you play on, you've got to get the ball in the pocket wherever it is.' Murphy's win over the Thai star has set up a clash with Mark Williams after the Welshman beat Yuan Sijun 5-3 in his opening contest. The three-time world champion was in the World Championship final last season at 50 years old, further cementing his legendary career, with Murphy rating him among the very best in the history of the sport. 'He's right up there, despite his very self-deprecating view on his career,' said the Magician. 'Whether he likes it or not he's an all-time legend and on his day he still beats anybody.' Williams and Murphy meet on Wednesday in the last 16 in Jeddah when Oliver Lines will take on Ali Carter after his huge upset win over Judd Trump. More Trending Neil Robertson and Mark Selby will meet in a blockbuster clash and Elliot Slessor faces Stuart Bingham. The remaining last 32 games are on Tuesday evening as Ronnie O'Sullivan plays Joe O'Connor, Zhao Xintong takes on Steven Hallworth, Kyren Wilson faces Iulian Boiko, Mark Allen meets Chang Bingyu. Si Jiahui and Wu Yize play an all-Chinese affair, Chris Wakelin faces Farakh Ajaib, Barry Hawkins faces Farakh Ajaib and Ding Junhui meets Stephen Maguire. Ex-snooker world champion breaks silence on four-month absence to reveal health problems

Luca Brecel's absence from snooker has continued after the Belgian pulled out of a tournament in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the 2023 world champion has revealed he has health problems Former world snooker champion has revealed his snooker hiatus is due to health problems. The 30-year-old has not competed since April and has pulled out of a number of tournaments with little clarity as to why until now. ‌ Brecel delayed his return to action by at least a further five weeks when he pulled out of the Saudi Arabia Masters. The star was due to face Englishman Sanderson Lam in the third round of competition but his opponent was handed a bye after Brecel cited medical reasons in his decision to withdraw from the tournament. ‌ The world no.39 has not been in action since being knocked out of the World Championship at the Crucible in April. Brecel reached the quarter-finals in Sheffiled but fell 13-8 to Judd Trump. ‌ Since, the Belgian Bullet has been absent for the first four events of the 2025/26 snooker caleendar. Brecel has missed the season-opening Championship League, and pulled out of qualifiers for both the Wuhan and British Open. It is said Brecel will not be punished for skipping the Saudi ranking tournament. And his health issues would appear to provide ample reason for his absences. Brecel revealed it has proven a frustrating period of his career as he attempted to enlighten his fans. In an Instagram story, he said: "Hi everyone, some of you might have been wondering why I am not participating in snooker events since April. "The truth is that I am suffering with health problems. "Me and my team are doing everything we can to come out of this stronger and better than before. "It's been really frustrating to not be able to travel and compete in tournaments! But... I always choose to be optimistic! Tough times often lead to something great!" ‌ Brecel will now be out of action until at least September. Next month could bring the opportunity to play in the Xi'an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open qualifiers in Leicester. That will be contingent on Brecel being well enough to challenge in the tournaments however. The 2023 Crucilbe champion has now been out of action for more than three months. That time appears to have seen him enjoy the summer months in his homeland. The Belgian has spent time in the Maasmechelen region during his hiatus from snooker. Brecel has taken the opportunity to enjoy life with his girlfriend. Per his Instagram account, the duo have embraced the chance to enjoy each other's company by riding bikes, eating food and drinking Stella, wine and cocktails.
