2025 MLB trade deadline date, potential trade targets
We might have already seen the biggest trade of the season, though, when the San Francisco Giants landed former Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers (who has done anything but slug since joining the team).
Oftentimes, the most impactful moves of the deadline are the quiet ones, the short-term trade for a reliever who ends up throwing 18 shutout innings in the postseason and helps a team win a title. That doesn't mean big names are not impactful. In the last decade we've seen players like Justin Verlander (2017), Aroldis Chapman (2016), and Jorge Soler (2021) get dealt at the deadline and go on to be massive centerpieces of championship teams.
So, with the trade deadline drawing near, is a similar outcome on the table? Here's everything to know about the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

When is the MLB trade deadline?
The 2025 MLB trade deadline is set for 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 31.
In recent years, the deadline had been on the same date, but at 4 p.m. ET. But the date is not set in stone year by year. Per MLB.com, the commissioner has the authority to set the deadline at any date and time between July 28 and Aug. 3, depending on which date and time will conflict with MLB games the least.
Who are the biggest trade targets this year?
Could Paul Skenes get traded?
A name that has been thrown around all year has been Pittsburgh Pirates ace and National League All-Star Game starter Paul Skenes. The former No. 1 overall pick has posted a 1.91 ERA on the season, the best in baseball. Despite the great numbers, though, Skenes has a record of 5-8, which has fans clamoring for him to be moved.
Skenes would surely bring in an absolute haul of prospects, but the organization has repeatedly stated it has no intent of trading a generational talent like Skenes. In early July, ESPN's Jeff Passan said the Pirates will not entertain offers for Skenes.

The psychology behind Anthony Volpe's error-filled game — and how the Yankees can fix him
Access the Yankees beat like never before Don't miss Greg Joyce's text messages from The Bronx and beyond — he's giving Sports+ subscribers the inside buzz on the Yankees. Sign Up Now It doesn't take a PhD to watch a Yankees game and diagnose Anthony Volpe's defensive struggles as a mental issue. That much has become obvious as the shortstop has made a MLB-leading 15 errors, including two in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Rays at Yankee Stadium. Advertisement The question at Yankee Stadium has become what to do with the floundering Volpe. Keep him at shortstop? Bench him temporarily? Send him to the minors for a week? Dr. Jonathan F. Katz, a sports psychologist who spent a year with the New York Rangers under former coach Tom Renney and has worked with several other pro and collegiate teams, told The Post he thinks Volpe's struggles aren't so different from a physical injury that would necessitate a rehab stint in the minors.

Dodgers Reportedly Calling On Twins Relievers As Deadline Looms
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly called the Minnesota Twins about their pair of back-end relievers, Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran, per MLB Insider Jon Morosi. The Dodgers have endured injuries to their bullpen and are looking to patch the holes before Thursday's trade deadline. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 30: Griffin Jax #22 of the Minnesota Twins delivers a pitch against the Boston Red Sox in the ninth inning at Target Field on July 30, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Red Sox defeated the Twins 13-1. More Photo byThe Dodgers are still expected to have reinforcements arriving for their bullpen from the injured list before the season's end. But with the loss of Evan Phillips for the entire season, the reigning World Series champions are looking to add to their bullpen for the final stretch. This has led them to call up the Twins and inquire about Jax and Duran, both pitchers with controllable years left and who have been effective in their careers. Duran is coming off back-to-back seasons of 20 saves or more and is headed for the mark once more this year. Jax is the least valuable piece that the Twins have to offer, as he has taken a step back from his career-best season last year. The right-hander has still been above league average in the Twins bullpen this season. While he has not been as effective as he was last season, he has increased his strikeout rate. The Dodgers are entering crunch time and will have to continue to talk with the Twins to sway one of the relievers their way ahead of the trade deadline. With Clase off the board, the Twins are likely to be busy in conversations about their reliever duo. More MLB: MLB Insider Reports Rangers Will Be Active At MLB Trade Deadline
