Photo byThe Dodgers are still expected to have reinforcements arriving for their bullpen from the injured list before the season's end. But with the loss of Evan Phillips for the entire season, the reigning World Series champions are looking to add to their bullpen for the final stretch.
This has led them to call up the Twins and inquire about Jax and Duran, both pitchers with controllable years left and who have been effective in their careers. Duran is coming off back-to-back seasons of 20 saves or more and is headed for the mark once more this year.
Jax is the least valuable piece that the Twins have to offer, as he has taken a step back from his career-best season last year. The right-hander has still been above league average in the Twins bullpen this season. While he has not been as effective as he was last season, he has increased his strikeout rate.
The Dodgers are entering crunch time and will have to continue to talk with the Twins to sway one of the relievers their way ahead of the trade deadline. With Clase off the board, the Twins are likely to be busy in conversations about their reliever duo.

Shohei Ohtani strikes out 8, hits go-ahead HR vs. Cardinals, but St. Louis rallies for win against Dodgers bullpen
Shohei Ohtani returned to the mound Wednesday for the first time since ending a July 30 start early due to cramps. All seems well with the National League MVP favorite. Ohtani pitched four one-run innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. And he hit a two-run home run in the third that gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 2-1 lead. But it wasn't enough for a Dodgers win as the Cardinals rallied for a 5-3 victory. He needed just 10 pitches to get through the Cardinals' side and reached 100 mph on the radar gun with a third-pitch strike to Alec Burleson that ended the inning. Ohtani pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the second that featured two strikeouts and required just 11 pitches. The third inning required more work from Ohtani and saw the Cardinals get on the scoreboard first. Jordan Walker reached on a leadoff infield pop-up that Miguel Rojas lost in the sun. Walker then stole second and reached third on a groundout. Brendan Donovan sent him home with a savvy, two-out bunt that landed for an RBI single and a 1-0 Cardinals lead. The lead was short-lived. Alex Call led off the bottom of the third with a double for the Dodgers. Two batters later, Ohtani sent him home with a blast deep into the center-field stands off Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore. The home run was the 39th of the season for Ohtani, which puts him one behind NL leader Kyle Schwarber and three behind MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh. It was also the 1,000th hit of Ohtani's MLB career. And Ohtani's day on the mound wasn't finished. He returned for the top of the fourth inning, in which he proceeded to strike out the side. Ohtani got each of Burleson, Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn swinging on third-pitch breaking balls to maintain the 2-1 Dodgers lead. The Dodgers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, and Ohtani did not return to the mound for the fifth inning. Reliever Justin Wrobleski took over. Ohtani finished his day on the mound having pitched four innings and allowed two hits, zero walks and one earned run that was the result of a misplay in the field. He struck out eight and lowered his ERA to 2.37. Ohtani's abbreviated start was part of the continued plan to ramp him back up on the mound following his 2023 elbow surgery. The Dodgers bullpen couldn't hold on for the win. Cardinals rally against Dodgers bullpen The Cardinals added a run in the sixth off of reliever Justin Wrobleski to cut the Dodgers lead to 3-2. In the eighth inning, they capitalized on an opportunity to retake the lead. Burleson and Winn got to first and second with with one out via singles off of Alex Vesia. Walker then delivered the game-tying RBI on a single to left-center field that scored Burleson. Then disaster struck for the Dodgers. After a throw to third base failed to get Winn out, third baseman Alex Freeland attempted to throw Walker out at second. Instead, the ball ended up in right field, and Winn scored the go-ahead run on the throwing error for a 4-3 Cardinals lead. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the ninth, and reliever Riley O'Brien pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to secure the 5-3 win. The Dodgers got a standout game from Ohtani. But in the end, it was the Cardinals who came out on top.

Guerrero and Blue Jays rout Rockies 20-1 to cap Coors Field barrage
DENVER (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had four hits, including a home run, and Davis Schneider went deep twice as the Toronto Blue Jays capped their Coors Field onslaught Wednesday with a 20-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The first-place Blue Jays finished with five homers and 24 hits to set a major league record with 63 hits in a three-game series. They established a franchise mark with 45 runs in the three-game set. Bo Bichette and Ernie Clement also homered for the AL East leaders, who outscored the Rockies 45-6 in the series and are 26-11 since June 25. Toronto hit 13 home runs in the series. Ty France had four doubles and Clement added four hits. Bichette and Schneider had four RBIs apiece. Guerrero extended his on-base streak to 23 games, the longest current streak in the American League. Toronto scored its final eight runs in the ninth inning off Colorado catcher Austin Nola, who gave up eight hits — including homers by Schneider and Clement. Kevin Gausman (8-8) allowed one run and three hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked two. Bichette hit a three-run homer off Kyle Freeland (2-12) in the third for a 3-1 lead. Nathan Lukes had a two-run triple in the fifth and Schneider homered off Angel Chivilli to begin a five-run sixth. Guerrero connected in the eighth. From art teacher to trailblazer: Jen Pawol's long road to becoming MLB's first female umpire
Baseball was always on television at the Long Island home where Jen Pawol grew up with her parents, Victoria and Jim. From a young age, the now 48-year-old knew that the sport was destined to be her future. 'I love being on the field the whole time,' Pawol said. 'It's in my DNA.' When she was seven, her mom and dad took her to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. A few decades later, it was a full-circle moment when Pawol returned to donate her own gear to celebrate the history of women in baseball. After rising through the ranks, umpiring the lower minor leagues all the way to Triple A, Pawol is set to make history this weekend as the first female umpire in Major League Baseball history when she works the bases at the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves games. Everything Pawol ever worked for has been building up to this moment. 'Catching and playing multiple sports throughout my career, catching a little bit on the side and things like that, all of that has culminated to help me be ready to be an umpire,' she told last year. 'Once I started umpiring, I said, 'This is for me.' I can't explain it.' Pawol 'begged' her parents to let her play baseball as a child, but girls played softball at the time, which is what she did, according to a 2023 profile in The Athletic. At the age of 13, Pawol's mother Victoria died suddenly from an aneurysm. Her mom's untimely death solidified the bond with her dad, Jim. They pulled one another through and remain close today. 'We just pressed on,' Pawol told the outlet. 'We got super close and still are.' Pawol attended West Milford High School in New Jersey, where she was an all-state softball and soccer player for three seasons in each sport. From there, she went to Hofstra on a softball scholarship, where she had a successful college softball career as a catcher. She became a three-time all-conference pick and was on the USA Baseball women's national baseball team in 2001. Alongside sport, Pawol worked as an art teacher and got a masters degree in painting from Hunter College in New York. But it wasn't enough. 'I wasn't really satisfied,' she said last year. 'Coming off of a huge competitive career, just playing locally, I wasn't getting my fix. And I remember looking at the umpire and being like, I think that's it. I got to go for that.' During her studies on weekends Pawol umpired fastpitch softball to help fund her tuition. She continued to teach art in upstate New York and umpired on the side. After umpiring National Collegiate Athletic Association softball from 2010 to 2016 she attended an MLB umpire tryout camp in 2015. 'You know I'm a woman, right?' Pawol told longtime MLB umpire Ted Barrett, who was among the instructors and was impressed with what he saw, according to The Athletic. Pawol was invited to the Umpire Training Academy at Vero Beach, Florida and was offered a job in the Gulf Coast League—one of the lower minor leagues— in 2016. It was where she made her debut as the first woman to umpire a Minor League Baseball game in almost a decade. The culture of the game has changed significantly, but Pawol said she was well aware of the additional scrutiny on her at the time, as she stepped up to the professional ranks. 'I can control my hustle, my calls, my professionalism. But gender and color and things like that, no one can control those,' she told in 2016. 'I can see why people are talking about it, asking those questions, because of the rarity of women being involved.' Ultimately, Pawol said she hoped her achievements 'might inspire more girls and women to get involved' in the sport. As for the men she has dealt with on the field throughout her career, Pawol didn't have a bad word to say. 'It's so much fun, and the men I've met in both Major and Minor League Baseball have been so wonderful and friendly,' she said. In April 2023, Pawol became the first female umpire in 34 years to reach Triple A. The significance of that day on April 30 in North Carolina struck her when St. Louis Cardinals' veteran Adam Wainwright, who made a rehab start for the Memphis Redbirds that game, approached the mound. 'Jen, I have four daughters and I think what you're doing is awesome,' Wainwright told Pawol, she recalled to The Athletic. In her no-nonsense manner, Powell replied: 'I still got to check your hands,' Pawol recalled, laughing. 'Just so you know.' Pawol has not forgotten the women who came before her, who each played a part in making her incredible achievement possible. Former umpires Bernice Gera and Christine Wren both shortened their first names to Bernie and Chris in a bid to force their way into the sport. Gera umpired one game in 1972 after fighting for years to do so, before she quit because of 'resentment' from other umpires and the baseball establishment. Wren umpired for three seasons in Class A from 1975 to 1977. Pam Postema, a close friend of Pawol's, umpired in the minor leagues for 13 seasons before she became the first woman to umpire a big-league spring game in 1989. Her contract was canceled after six years at Triple A. And Ria Cortesio, the second woman to umpire a major-league spring training game, even lowered her voice and cut her ponytail to fit in. Cortesio spent nine years in the minor leagues, including the last five in the Double-A Southern League, then was released after the 2007 season. 'The things that Pam and Ria and Chris had to deal with, they were moving the big boulders,' Pawol said. 'You don't have to change your name or pretend to be a boy. You just show up.'
