Why Netflix, Warner Bros and Disney now go beyond screens to sell real-world experiences

Netflix, Warner Bros Discovery and other entertainment companies are looking beyond films and television shows, opening hotels, restaurants and other attractions to deepen their relationships with viewers.

Unlike other parts of the business, where participants lament budget cuts, tepid movie ticket sales and
jobs moving out of the United States , the attractions business is booming.
Netflix has had over 70 marriage proposals at the Queen's Ball, a touring version of its hit show Bridgerton.
The events, which involve picking an attendee to be honoured by the queen, are frequently posted online, according to Greg Lombardo, who heads the live experiences business at the streaming service.
'It just creates such conversation out there and supports that title in between those season releases,' Lombardo said at an industry event.
Paramount Global's hotel portfolio has expanded to 1,500 rooms from 200 in the past three years, according Marie Marks, who leads the company's experiences business. Another 2,000 rooms are in development, tied to classic Paramount films and its Nickelodeon kids brand.

Meet Brianne Howey, Ginny & Georgia star: from flight attendant ambitions to improv, landing roles in 90210, Revenge, Criminal Minds and the Netflix comedy series, and stunning fans as a fashionista

Actress Brianne Howey has had her fair share of viral moments on TikTok and Instagram for her role in Netflix's Ginny & Georgia . Howey's portrayal of Georgia, a young, sometimes morally ambiguous mum of two with a charming southern accent and fierce drive to protect her kids has been lauded by many as 'iconic' while others, like Howey, found the character overbearing and 'unhinged' – until she became a mother herself. Brianne Howey is from California. Photo: @briannehowey/Instagram 'Prior to having a child, of course, I thought many of the Georgia-isms were absolutely insane and unhinged and over the top, and why is she taking up so much space?' she told People in a recent interview. 'Now that I have a child, I am so obsessed with her that I understand why Georgia is so obsessed with Ginny, and my heart only got bigger and I just have even more respect for all the mums out there.' Howey welcomed her daughter with her husband Matt Ziering in 2023. Advertisement Becoming a mum made Brianne Howey appreciate her character in Ginny & Georgia. Photo: @briannehowey/Instagram Here's everything you need to know about Brianne Howey. She's from California Brianne Howey was raised by a single mum. Photo: @ellecanada/Instagram In spite of her very convincing southern accent on Ginny & Georgia, Howey was actually born and raised in La Cañada Flintridge, California, by a single mother. The 36-year-old's childhood helped shape her role in the Netflix show. In an interview with Byrdie in 2021, Howey said, 'There's a lot of my mum in Georgia. I grew up with a super young single mum. She had me at 21, so we had a similar relationship. She wasn't stealing money from my school or anything like that [laughs]. But Georgia is a survivalist. And that's something I relate to and something my mum related to. It's not something I see on paper a ton, especially for such a young woman who already has kids and lived such a life at 30.' Her acting career Brianne Howey gave up her dream of becoming a flight attendant when she joined her school's improv team. Photo: @briannehowey/Instagram Growing up, Howey had wanted to become a flight attendant, but things changed when she joined her high school's improv team and fell in love with acting. 'I did it after school, and it started consuming all of my time,' Howey said in an interview with ClicheMag in 2015. 'In college, I started looking at it in a different lens.'

‘Sesame Street' coming soon to Netflix

Sesame Street will soon be available on the online video service Netflix. In the US, it will still be available on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), a public television channel. Sesame Workshop, the non-profit group that makes Sesame Street, said last month that famous characters including Elmo, Cookie Monster and Abby Cadabby would come to Netflix. New episodes of the show will be available on PBS platforms in the US on the same day they appear on Netflix. Netflix will show the new 56th season of Sesame Street, as well as 90 hours of old episodes. The streaming platform will show the old episodes all over the world. Sesame Street started in 1969. It is a popular educational show for children. In recent years, Sesame Workshop has been facing financial struggles. In March, the non-profit organisation announced that it would lay off about 20 per cent of its staff.

Netflix's Dept. Q star Matthew Goode plays annoying, ‘amazing' cop in Edinburgh crime drama

Matthew Goode quite likes being a leading man. Advertisement He is the star of Dept. Q, based on the books by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen and set in the cold case division of an Edinburgh police station. From The Queen's Gambit producer Scott Frank, the nine-part miniseries, now streaming on Netflix, sees Goode playing a one-man combination of good cop/bad cop. While Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck is a brilliant investigator, he is equally successful at annoying people – grudging respect for his talent quickly turns into intense dislike. It is not that Goode has not been No 1 on the call sheet before, it is just that he did not enjoy it. Advertisement 'It's something I shied away from after the beginning of my career where I was there for a bit and then I had some sort of bad things … things weren't necessarily positive at that point, after that. And I just went, I just want to be, you know, not the lead any more,' he says.
