UP: Kanwariyas showered with flower petals; Muslims in Sambhal among those welcoming them
As the yatra entered its 11th day, the district administration of Barabanki, Sambhal, Ayodhya and Basti districts greeted the devotees with petals as they arrived at various temples in these districts to perform rituals.
Communal harmony was on full display in Sambhal district as Muslims, along with authorities, showered rose flowers on kanwariyas.
Sambhal witnessed violence in November 2024 after locals clashed with government officials over a court-ordered survey of Shahi Jama Masjid, located in Kot Garvi area of the city. The violence resulted in the death of four people.
In Barabanki, District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya supervised the aerial shower on devotees, who gathered at the ancient Mahadeva Shiva temple in Ramnagar tehsil.
Virendra Kumar Awasthi, chief priest of the Mahadeva temple, lauded the initiative, calling it a heartfelt tribute to the unwavering faith of the devotees.
Tight security arrangements were made for the event to ensure the safety of the crowd on Tuesday, officials said.
The Mahadeva temple becomes a major pilgrim site during Shravan, drawing devotees from across the region.
In Ayodhya, marigold and rose petals were showered on the Shiva devotees walking barefoot in large numbers.
District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde and Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover rained flowers from a helicopter on the kanwariyas visiting Hanumangarhi Temple, Nageshwarnath Temple, Darshan Marg, Saryu Ghat, Lata Mangeshkar Chowk and the Ram Temple.
Seventy kilometres east of Ayodhya, similar scenes were witnessed in Basti district, where Divisional Commissioner Akhilesh Singh and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sanjeev Tyagi, showered flowers while conducting aerial inspection of security arrangements for kanwariyas.
The Shiva devotees were visiting ancient Bhadeshwarnath Temple to perform jalabhishek and other rituals, officials said.

‘Mane Manege Police' initiative launched in Karnataka's Shivamogga district
The 'Mane Manege Police' (Police to Every Home), a new initiative to establish people-friendly policing, was launched in Karnataka's Shivamogga district on Thursday. District and Sessions Judge Manjunath Nayak launched the initiative by lighting a lamp in a programme held at Ramanna Shreshthi Park in the city. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nayak told the police staff to listen to people's problems in a cordial manner and address them effectively. The public should also cooperate with the police to make the programme a success, he said. A good relationship between the police and the public, he said, was essential in ensuring harmony in society. 'Normally, people do not wish to visit a police station, nor do they expect the police to visit them at home. The government has launched this initiative to make the police administration people-friendly. I appreciate the Home Department for this programme,' he said. The judge said it would be better if the police chose not to wear uniforms when they visit homes, and take children into confidence during the interaction. He also suggested the public to follow the suggestions of the police. Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar said that the public continued to possess fear about the police because of the measures the police resorted to in order to control the public during the freedom movement. 'The people still consider police as a legacy of the British. The State government has launched the initiative to clear this notion. Besides that, the people have misconceptions about the police after watching cinemas and serials. I hope this initiative will ensure a good relationship between the police and the people,' he opined. He appealed to the public to share whatever problems they faced with the police during their visit. 'We will make honest efforts to resolve them,' he stated. Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Bhoomaredd and other officers were present.

Guard against infiltration amid Assam eviction drive: Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma
GUWAHATI Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has directed officials to coordinate with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and traditional heads to ensure that individuals evicted by the Assam government do not enter the State. on Thursday (July 24, 2025), Mr. Sangma convened a high-level meeting with all Deputy Commissioners to review security and surveillance measures along the interstate border. Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang and other top officials were present. 'The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the overall effect of the recent eviction drives in Assam, particularly in areas close to the border with Meghalaya,' the Chief Minister said after the meeting. Emphasising the need for heightened vigilance along the border, Mr. Sangma called for coordination among district officials, traditional heads, NGOs, and members of Village Defence Parties to prevent any illegal movement or infiltration, especially in vulnerable regions. Earlier, a directive issued by the State's Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Shakil P. Ahamed, said, 'In view of the ongoing eviction drive against illegal immigrants undertaken by the Government of Assam and to prevent possible influx of the displaced individuals to the State as a consequence, all Deputy Commissioners are hereby directed to keep vigilant and take necessary measures to ensure the potential influx is kept in check and law and order is maintained.' Meghalaya has expressed concern over the possible 'spillover' effects of Assam's eviction drives, particularly in the western regions bordering Goalpara and South Salmara-Mankachar districts. A major eviction operation, during which one person was killed in police firing, was conducted recently in Goalpara's Paikan Reserve Forest. Meghalaya is the third North-eastern State after Nagaland and Manipur to instruct its border district authorities to prevent the entry of individuals evicted from various categories of government land in Assam. Nagaland, in particular, has intensified monitoring efforts. Officials in the State's Niuland district, which borders Assam's Golaghat district, said that security personnel had 'deported' individuals who had arrived in 'more than 200 vehicles'. The Assam government is also conducting a survey of forested areas in Golaghat's Uriamghat region in preparation for an eviction drive. Several encroachers are reported to have left the area in anticipation. Since June, more than 50,000 people, mostly Muslims with roots in Bangladesh, have reportedly been evicted from various parts of Assam.
