Suranne Jones watched Starmer and Sunak ‘battle' in preparation for new role
The series, which will be released on the streaming platform on August 21, sees Julie Delpy play a fictional visiting French president who is blackmailed, leaving the two leaders to face unimaginable choices.
On her preparation for the role, Jones said: 'We spoke to people in positions of power.
'We went to the House of Commons, and we watched Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer battle against each other.
'We met with the Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle. We looked at Nicola Sturgeon. And Jacinda Ardern (the former prime minister of New Zealand).
'We looked at Theresa May. And Lucy Powell (MP for Manchester Central).
'We had fun developing it. It made me think about what being a woman of power means, and what it costs.'
She added: 'The whole thing is about you, your family unit, how women split themselves between work and home, what the cost is, how you want to be portrayed, how the world perceives you as a woman, and what you have to battle with, before you start your day.
'All of that is going on before you put your heels on.
'And you might not want to put your heels on. And your power suit. But actually, you have to in order to make a mark in the room.'
Jones rose to fame playing Karen McDonald on ITV soap Coronation Street, and the actress is due to star in the third series of BBC police drama Vigil, which is being filmed this year with a release date yet to be announced.
The full interview can be read in the latest edition of Radio Times magazine.

Scottish Love is Blind UK star sends urgent message to fans as season 2 drops on Netflix
Katisha has shared an important message to Love Is Blind UK fans A Love is Blind UK contestant has made an urgent appeal to viewers as the highly anticipated second season returns to screens. The fresh season of Love Is Blind UK launches on Netflix today, Wednesday, August 13 following last year's triumph. A completely new batch of singletons are entering the experiment hoping to discover their ideal partner. However, there's a catch - isolated in individual pods, participants must forge emotional bonds without any face-to-face contact. Only after getting engaged and committing to progress their romance will they finally meet before moving in together and planning their wedding, reports the Mirror. As the programme broadcasts, one participant has made an urgent appeal asking viewers to be "mindful". Scottish contestant Katisha is the oldest of seven siblings and has remained single for over six years. Describing herself as "eternally unlucky in love", the 31 year old is determined to find romance with someone prepared to commit. Katisha has plenty of affection to offer and seeks a husband rather than just a boyfriend. Posting on her Instagram profile this week, Katisha revealed her time on the show has been "surreal". She posted: "2 DAYS TO GO UNTIL WE GO LIVE!!! Woke up this morning feeling SO excited but also a little nervous. "When I applied for @loveisblindnetflix never in a million years did I think I would be chosen to take part in the experiment! I'm a huge fan of the show and it's nuts that I've been lucky enough to visit the pods and be one of 30 singles given the opportunity to find love in an unorthodox way!!" Making an urgent appeal to viewers, she continued: "It's so surreal seeing it out there now when I've been sat on it for months. A quick PSA: "As you watch the show please be mindful as, as much as this is entertaining and it is a TV show this is still very much our lives!! It takes big balls to do something like this and I take my hats off to myself and all my cast mates for even just showing up. "I tried to keep true to myself and keep my mind and heart open throughout - as you've seen there's definitely been some vulnerability from me too. Kinda nervous for you to see this side of me actually. "Eeek! Can't wait to unpack it with you all! ! Are you ready to find out if love truly is blind???"

Animation smashes Netflix record in days becoming second most-watched film
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Netflix may be home to countless blockbusters, but a new contender is quickly climbing to the top of the all-time leaderboard. This animated film has captured the imaginations of viewers across the world and is currently sitting at 184.6 million views. That puts it just behind Red Notice – and if it's momentum holds, it could dethrone it in just a matter of weeks. The 2021 action-comedy, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, seemed untouchable – until now. Since premiering on June 20, KPop Demon Hunters has pulled in over 20 million views per week. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. In the most recent weekly rankings from August 4–10, it picked up another 25.9 million views. It ranked just behind My Oxford Year, but beat out anticipated titles like Happy Gilmore 2, Gladiator II, and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The film blends KPop, Korean folklore, and fantasy action into a neon-lit, high-energy spectacle that's unlike anything else on Netflix. It follows fictional pop group HUNTR/X – global idols by day, demon slayers by night – as they face off against the Saja Boys, a rival boy band hiding a dark secret. Rotten Tomatoes critics have given the film a glowing 97% score, with many praising it for its originality, emotional depth, and sheer entertainment value. Voice talent includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, Ji-young Yoo, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, Lee Byung-hun, and many more familiar names. The animation style is bold and vibrant, the soundtrack is contagious, and the choreography has already gone viral on TikTok. The song Golden from the movie even topped the Billboard Global 200, marking a major moment for an animated act. It's managed to cross genres, languages, and age groups – drawing in KPop stans, animation lovers, and curious Netflix browsers alike. Week after week, its viewership has held strong, making it the only movie in Netflix history to maintain such numbers so consistently over eight straight weeks. That consistency is what makes this climb so significant – and so threatening to Red Notice's long-standing record. KPop Demon Hunters now needs around 46 million more views to claim the title of Netflix's most-watched movie ever. Netflix hasn't confirmed plans for a sequel just yet, but fans are already demanding one – plus merch, a series, and possibly even a live-action spin-off. Fans have praised the new animation for creating a new generation of K-pop fans – whilst also bringing back older generations. @wisewyss on X said: 'The more the merrier, new KPop fans will come of this.' 'My love for KPop was revived thanks to this movie,' @ravenPH added. The film has also reignited conversation around what animated movies can be – especially when paired with global music trends like K-pop. And if there was ever doubt about the worldwide power of Korean storytelling, this movie silenced it. While most of Netflix's top movies come from Hollywood studios with action-heavy formulas, KPop Demon Hunters proves that creativity and cultural flair can be just as powerful. More Trending It's a massive win for Korean creators, for animated storytelling, and for viewers looking for something fresh. With just a few weeks to go before it potentially claims the number one spot, all eyes are on HUNTR/X. They came to slay demons, now they might slay the Netflix record books too. KPop Demon Hunters is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? With so much going on, it's always welcome when you find a spot to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Ideally with a nice drink or two. A new, and relatively unknown spot, is the French Institute, just off the Royal Mile. It's home to Le Bistrot, a 'down to earth' French restaurant that's billed as being great value. And, for the month of August, there will also be a pop-up Amethyst bar serving £10 cocktails. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad X Muse cocktails at the Amethyst bar in Edinburgh. | Rosalind Erskine From the team behind Jupiter Artland and X Muse vodka, and the Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF), this serene bar has high tables and chairs and white walls adorned with black and white pictures of the many artworks at Jupiter Artland, which is situated just outside of Edinburgh. The feature of the room is the large number of amethyst crystals which appear to pour out of a fireplace. These are in homage to the installation, The Light Pours Out Of Me by Anya Gallacio at Jupiter Artland, and its inspiration behind the production process of X Muse vodka, which is made using two barley spirits which are blended to create a smooth spirit. I tried it for the first time last year and was converted to vodka martinis because of it. X Muse is the first blended barley vodka and has been inspired by the spirit-making traditions of Scotland. It came about thanks to a collaboration between Robert and Vadim Grigoryan, a renowned drinks industry expert who worked for years with Pernod Ricard. It also has links to amethyst as the liquid from the distillation process of the vodka rests on amethyst crystals, linking to natural energetic healing and in reference to Anya Gallaccio's amethyst grotto at the Jupiter Artland estate. Running for three weeks in August (6-23), the pop-up bar has an outdoor terrace, inside bar and creative space with bespoke cocktails inspired by the art works of Jupiter Artland, the spiritual home of X Muse vodka and art visitor estate. The Amethyst bar blends contemporary art and mixology together reflecting the brand's unique commitment to art and artists. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Each of the bespoke cocktails on the menu (all priced at £10) has been crafted by some of Edinburgh's most talented bartenders, drawing direct inspiration from artworks located within the Jupiter Artland grounds, such as: Cells of Life by Charles Jencks, Star/Steer by Ian Hamilton Finlay, The Light Pours Out Of Me by Anya Gallacio, and Cafe Party by Nicolas Party. Visitors will be able to enjoy the curated cocktail menu and neat tasting serves of X Muse and its two distinct barleys. The pop-up will also feature a terrace space on the Royal Mile, providing a perfect point of relaxation to soak in the festival atmosphere. I visited on the day the bar opened to find a peaceful spot amid the chaos of the Royal Mile. The small but well curated cocktail menu will appeal to those looking for a twist on the classics and the Scots Pine martini - a refreshing take on the classic pour which has been made using needles and cones Scots pine. Vadim Grigoryan, co-founder and creative director of X Muse said: 'X Muse has art in its DNA. Since its inception we have been organically building our relationships with the world of art through our pop-up bars, such as at Venice Art Biennale. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Our partnership with EAF is a very logical continuation of this belief in the transformational power of art, what I call 'Art Thinking' in my book. The Amethyst bar is treated in this way to the utmost details of its cocktails - both delicious and meaningful.'
