Young Thug headlines Summer Smash 2025 lineup in first show since prison release
In what could be his first performance since being released from prison last year, Young Thug is among the headliners for the annual hip-hop festival Summer Smash.
The "Trance" rapper will headline alongside Future, Don Toliver and Yeat during the festival at the SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois scheduled for June 20-22, 2025.
Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, will headline the third and final day on Sunday, June 22 which includes acts like Chance The Rapper, Quavo and Lil Yachty.
The Atlanta rap star was jailed between May 2022 and November 2024 on several charges relating to alleged street gang involvement with Young Slime Life (YSL). Yet he avoided more time incarcerated after pleading guilty in November returning home on probation.
On Wednesday, the rapper posted on Instagram a photo of himself performing, a treat for fans who've highly anticipated his return to the stage during the festival's 7th edition.
"I feel lucky to be able to throw the party of the year with my best friends," Summer Smash Festival co-founder Cole Bennett said in a news release. "May this be the best one yet. Lucky No. 7."

Bella Thorne's Proposal Controversy, Explained

I did not have 'Bella Thorne proposal controversy' on my 2025 bingo card. Though given the chaotic state of the world, I probably should have. On Sunday, Aug. 17, Bella Throne shared an Instagram post showing her proposal to fiancé Mark Emms. The sweet post, captioned '3 years ago we met, 1 year later he proposed, now 1 year later so did I,' was meant to celebrate the one year anniversary of their engagement and Mark's original proposal. Instead, it quickly devolved into a debate about gender roles in the comments. 'Okay ladies, let's not normalize this, okay?' reads a top comment—it currently has 93, 847 likes. Another asks, 'If he already proposed why did you do it lol I'm confused.' More critics flocked to the comments, adding in confused emojis and GIFs, prompting debates among fans. Things got so chaotic, Bella herself addressed the discourse in a since-deleted Instagram Story. 'The comments on my post are hilarious,' she wrote, per E! News. 'Totally split down the middle. Half of you are like let's not normalize proposing to your partner—other half is like f--k yeah girl power this is the sweetest!!' While I'm glad Bella isn't letting the negativity in her comments affect her happiness, there is a dark side to the criticisms that can't be ignored. This isn't just a case of trolls hating on Bella for the fun of it, it's sexism. When people criticize Bella's decision to propose, they're implying that she shouldn't have done it because that's not her role as a woman. Her actions, then, threaten the gender binary they seem to hold so dear. This 'controversy' isn't about Bella, it's about gender roles within the patriarchy—most posters are just good at hiding it. One commenter, however, said the quiet part out loud, writing, 'Men don't need more encouragement to be more energetically feminine than they already are.' It's hard not to see these criticisms as related to growing transphobia and backlash to LGBTQ+ rights, as well as the rise of trad wife content—Nara Smith cooking videos, the Princess Treatment trend, etc.—all of which promotes traditional gender roles. Not only that, but the brazenness of these critiques—why are we posting this on former child star Bella Thorne's Instagram?—points to a growing conservative slant in American culture and media that allows people to feel comfortable spouting these views on a stranger's Instagram post. This might seem like harmless Instagram drama, but assuming these commenters are serious in their beliefs, it's actually a pretty dark indicator of where we are right now, and where we might be headed.

1st woman to skateboard across US raises $50K for spinal cord injury research

Brooke Johnson has made history as the first woman to skateboard across the U.S. The 29-year-old kicked off her journey at the beach in Santa Monica, California, and after 119 days and 3,266 miles, she completed the historic feat in Virginia Beach on Friday. Johnson set out on the grueling adventure to raise money for Wings for Life, a nonprofit spinal cord research foundation, in honor of her late stepfather Roger, who she said broke his C5 vertebrae, became a quadriplegic and died of the spinal cord injury last year. From inclement weather to tough terrain and holes in her shoes, Johnson persevered through every obstacle, raising $50,000 while setting the new world record. Johnson told ABC Norfolk station WVEC that her late stepfather's presence helped motivate her along the way. "He's, like, supported me through this whole thing -- it's actually crazy," she said. Prior to his death, Johnson said the pair's hope was to skate across the finish line with Johnson pushing her stepfather in his wheelchair. "I was like, 'Roger it's a really big country.' And he was like, 'Well, you can do it,'" Johnson said. Johnson was wearing a heart-shaped necklace with Roger's ashes inside when she crossed the Red Bull finish line on Friday. "Roger left me purpose, and for that I thank him every single day," she said. Johnson shared a recap of the journey on her Instagram page Saturday. The video montage was set to an old voicemail left by her stepfather, which she said "was one of those messages that felt like he left it for the present moment." "If there's one thing you take away from this trip, it's that you can truly do anything you put your mind to," she wrote in the caption.

Soulshine at Sea 3 Is Cancelled After Artist Exodus

Soulshine at Sea 3 won't set sail as planned. The concert cruise was slated to begin its voyage Nov. 4-8, 2025, headlined by Michael Franti & Spearhead and tracing a path from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico. More from Billboard Fans Choose Conan Gray's 'Wishbone' as This Week's Favorite New Music Hailey Bieber Pokes Fun at Candid Moment Between Justin and Kendall Jenner Ronnie Rondell Jr., Stuntman Set on Fire for Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' Cover, Dies at 88 Produced by Sixthman, and billed as Soulshine at Sea 3 With Michael Franti, the event was officially sold-out back in mid-December 2024. However, the show entered stormy waters in recent days when performers including Dispatch, Maggie Rose, Hirie, and Liz Vice pulled out. Sixthman has returned its plans to dock. 'In light of recent events, the Soulshine at Sea with Michael Franti event scheduled for November 4-8, 2025, is cancelled,' reads a statement posted to the official Soulshine at Sea's website, noting that plans for a separate event are underway. The artist exodus was fueled by allegations of abuse by an unnamed artist on the lineup. Maggie Rose shared a post on her Instagram stories: 'I've made the decision to no longer perform at Soulshine at Sea. There were some allegations made by a peer of mine about another artist on the lineup and I want to stand in solidarity with her. I hope you understand my decision and I appreciate your support.' Another, from Dispatch reads: 'We've decided we will no longer be performing at Soulshine at Sea. We have been made aware of deeply concerning public allegations involving another artist on the lineup and have chosen to withdraw from the event. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.' Hirie and Lice Vice also pulled out, citing similar reasons. Earlier, musician Victoria Canal accused a 'very powerful, decades older' man in the music industry of grooming and sexually abusing her when she was 19. 'This is something I've never spoken about publicly, and have been holding for 8 years now – it has plagued my body, spirit, and mind, in subliminal and overt ways, for my entire 20s,' Canal wrote Aug. 11 on her Instagram account. She declined to mention his name or any specifics 'because I can't risk the financial loss or emotional terror a lawsuit would bring.' This 'experience, which lasted a little over a year, has had a years-lasting effect on my intimate life,' she writes. As the accusations and subsequent cancellation spread on social media, Franti attempted to clear the air with a statement on an extramarital affair, a 'regrettable mistake,' as he puts it. 'I come here most humbly to share my story with you,' he writes in a social post. '7 years ago I had a romantic relationship outside my marriage. It was with an artist who was touring with me. I broke my wedding vows, I broke my wife's trust, I broke her heart and for that I am deeply sorry for the pain my actions have caused.' Franti's wife found out about, and 'to save my marriage, we ended the relationship,' he continues. The unidentified artist continued to tour with Franti in what he depicts as a professional relationship, and after the tour ended, continued to perform with him at 'several shows.' Meanwhile, organisers of Soulshine at Sea are 'actively working to announce a new event that will sail November 4-8, 2025'. Additional details will be shared today, Aug. 18.
