South Florida back-to-school giveaways underway. See where you can get backpacks, shoes and supplies for your students
It may still be summer, but South Florida is just weeks away from the first day of school. And with that, the back-to-school giveaways have begun. Through Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, several organizations are hosting giveaways for everything from shoes to backpacks to ensure that South Florida's students are ready for the upcoming academic year. Here are just some of the back-to-school giveaways underway in South Florida. Chase and the 100 Black Men of South Florida Community Day: To help families prepare, the nonprofit 100 Black Men of South Florida is partnering up with Chase Bank for a back-to-school community day in North Miami. The event will include backpack giveaways, free haircuts for students, financial literacy resources, and live entertainment for children and parents. The event begins Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chase Community Branch located at 12600 NW 7th Ave. Amigos Back-to-School: Amigos for Kids has held one of the longest-running free school supply initiatives in the Miami community and it is back again for this school year. Through the Blue Backpack Project, the organization reaches families in the most under-resourced communities of Miami-Dade County by partnering with schools, community groups and government agencies. Amigos for Kids will hold its backpack giveaway on Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 351 SW 4th Ave. D5/Doral Back to School: Also on Aug. 2, the City of Doral will host its annual back-to-school event. This event, in collaboration with school board member Danny Espino, will offer thousands of backpacks, resources for kids, haircuts and food. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Families can reserve their students' backpacks online here. Bair Middle School: While supplies last, Bair Middle School will be giving away a new pair of free shoes to kids who come to its event. The event will be held on Wednesday, July 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school located at 9100 NW 21st Manor in Sunrise. Deerfield Beach Block Party: On Aug. 2, the City of Deerfield Beach will hold its fourth annual back-to-school block party and backpack giveaway, where families can get their school supplies for this year. The city notes that a child must be present to receive a backpack and supplies. There will also be free food, games and a live DJ. The event will be held at the Johnny L. Tigner Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 445 SW 2nd St.

Fundraiser supports Baton Rouge group's mentoring program
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge is hosting its annual Sneaker Soiree: Kicks for a Cause Fundraiser on Saturday, May 10. The group has a mentoring program centered around young male students in grades 6-12. The fundraiser will provide scholarships to 13 seniors this year and fund other program initiatives. Students in the program learn about financial literacy, career readiness, leadership and so much more. The group offers collegiate support as well to students at Southern University and Louisiana State University, and the group provides services to female students, too. 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette builds community center
LAFAYETTE La. () — 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette, a community nonprofit organization, is requesting approval from the Lafayette city-parish councils for a $100,000 grant from for construction of their new neighborhood center. The proposal states the goal is to construct a community center in the McComb-Veazey neighborhood with proposed money coming from the Lafayette Consolidated Government's community development block grants. The grant dollars are designated to support community development activities. 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette former president Alton Trahan explained the plans for the mentor-youth center on Pershing Avenue. Trahan said that design plans are being sent out to contractors for bidding to determine the costs. 'So, we can help in any way we can, not only from a revitalization standpoint, by cleaning up the neighborhood but also what we can do for the kids,' he said. The neighborhood center will serve as a hub for the 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette. Trahan said they partnered with to apply for a neighborhood revitalization grant through . 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette was awarded $200,000 to initiate the project. 'It's going to be nice. We are looking at a 36-hundred-square-foot building,' he said. 'We're not only going to do mentoring here, but we are going to get out in the neighborhood and do some revitalization. That's the whole point of the grant: some after-school tutoring as well as some neighborhood meetings on financial literacy, health and issues such as that. We're excited.' Child injured in St. Martinville hit and run
ST. MARTINVILLE La. () — The driver involved in an alleged hit and run that left a child seriously injured has been arrested by . Officials said earlier this morning, a driver ran through the flashing signs of a school bus, struck a child and drove off on Main Street near the intersection of Mimosa Lane. Donna Bourque, 64, of St. Martinville was later identified by officials via city cameras. She has been arrested and booked into jail for hit and run with serious bodily injury charges.
