South Florida back-to-school giveaways underway. See where you can get backpacks, shoes and supplies for your students
Through Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, several organizations are hosting giveaways for everything from shoes to backpacks to ensure that South Florida's students are ready for the upcoming academic year.
Here are just some of the back-to-school giveaways underway in South Florida.
Chase and the 100 Black Men of South Florida Community Day: To help families prepare, the nonprofit 100 Black Men of South Florida is partnering up with Chase Bank for a back-to-school community day in North Miami. The event will include backpack giveaways, free haircuts for students, financial literacy resources, and live entertainment for children and parents. The event begins Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chase Community Branch located at 12600 NW 7th Ave.
Amigos Back-to-School: Amigos for Kids has held one of the longest-running free school supply initiatives in the Miami community and it is back again for this school year. Through the Blue Backpack Project, the organization reaches families in the most under-resourced communities of Miami-Dade County by partnering with schools, community groups and government agencies. Amigos for Kids will hold its backpack giveaway on Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 351 SW 4th Ave.
D5/Doral Back to School: Also on Aug. 2, the City of Doral will host its annual back-to-school event. This event, in collaboration with school board member Danny Espino, will offer thousands of backpacks, resources for kids, haircuts and food. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Families can reserve their students' backpacks online here.
Bair Middle School: While supplies last, Bair Middle School will be giving away a new pair of free shoes to kids who come to its event. The event will be held on Wednesday, July 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school located at 9100 NW 21st Manor in Sunrise.
Deerfield Beach Block Party: On Aug. 2, the City of Deerfield Beach will hold its fourth annual back-to-school block party and backpack giveaway, where families can get their school supplies for this year. The city notes that a child must be present to receive a backpack and supplies. There will also be free food, games and a live DJ. The event will be held at the Johnny L. Tigner Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 445 SW 2nd St.

15 Back-To-School Cartoons To Prepare Kids For A New School Year
It's back-to-school time! It's time to get back to hitting the books, reconnecting with old friends, meeting new people, and enjoying after-school extracurricular activities. What happens when your children experience the first day of school jitters? Perhaps a back-to-school cartoon can help set their mind at ease and prepare them as they attempt to settle back into a school-based rhythm. Feeling anxious about going back to school is normal. Getting used to new teachers, being surrounded by new peers, and having to assimilate to a different schedule are all stressors that can cause nervousness in children. Parents also feel overwhelmed about the back-to-school season coming again after summer. Many feel the stress, especially if their young one has special needs that require extensive care and nurturing. conducted a back-to-school study, and researchers indicated that 35% of parents with children who are 18 or younger with an LTD (such as dyslexia) are more stressed about whether their child will have the resources they need. Here are a bunch of back-to-school cartoon episodes that may help everyone in your family get ready for the school year ahead. I've included age recommendations based on parental feedback, with shows for every age group from two-year-olds to 13. Just remember, children mature at different times, so don't be afraid to adjust these age ranges based on your child's maturity level. A few of the shows for younger kids can even help prepare them for daycare! Doof 101 (Season 4, Episode 21) From Phineas & Ferb Recommended Age: Six to 11 Years Old Two storylines are parallel in 'Doof 101.' A new year in high school begins for Vanessa. Her father, Dr. Doofenshmirtz, must fulfill a community service mandate as punishment for a committed crime. Hence, he becomes a temporary science teacher for Vanessa's class, causing her embarrassment because of his cheeky, unique personality. Meanwhile, Phineas and Ferb start a new year of elementary school, where their self-appointed mission is to make stellar improvements to the school playground. What Kids Learn from 'Doof 101': New school years bring unexpected challenges and changes. Kids will understand that parents mean well when interacting with their friends, even if they can come off as quirky and embarrassing in their opinions. Also, thinking big and taking action to make a project come to life will lead to discoveries and opportunities. Recess: Taking The Fifth Grade From Recess Recommended Age: Seven to 12 Years Old The titular characters, TJ, Spinelli, Mikey, Vince, Gretchen, and Gus, enter 5th grade in this back-to-school cartoon special that is also the end of the Recess series. TJ is upset with Miss Finster becoming their teacher because of an unexpected transfer of the teacher they were originally going to have. To top it all off, the school lunch is replaced with a subpar nutritional paste, kids no longer have access to lockers, and the playground is removed from school grounds. The unexpected changes help TJ and the other fifth graders to evolve in ways they've never thought before. What Kids Learn From 'Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade': Growing up and transitioning to new school years can bring about frustrating changes that no one is prepared for. Adapting to new situations means discovering creative solutions to cope with them. My daughter discussed trying to wear a hoodie on the first day of school (she's going into 2nd grade this year) to hide herself because she would be shy. I reminded her that hoods on heads are against school policy. I gently informed her it's best to stand tall and proud and be brave, even if she's feeling scared. Back To School With Franklin From Franklin Recommended Age: Four to Eight Years Old This back-to-school cartoon has changes written all over it. Franklin and his friends return to school after a great summer. They're surprised to find Miss Koala as their teacher instead of Mr. Owl. The substitute teacher reports that Mr. Owl had a family emergency and that it would take time for him to return to school. Franklin is wary of Miss Koala at first because she is firmer and stricter than Mr. Owl. However, as he and the class learn more about Australia, Miss Koala's birthplace, Franklin begins to understand and respect her more. She even helps form a school soccer team for Franklin and his peers. In the end, the class is saddened when Miss Koala has to leave, but they are happy to have Mr. Owl back at school. What Kids Learn From 'Back To School With Franklin': Changes can make children uncomfortable, but they also offer opportunities to grow and learn. Giving new individuals, whether they are teachers or students, a chance as you get to know them can help you appreciate their unique qualities and enjoy time with them. I was a substitute teacher for a few years before I had my eldest daughter in 2018. It was normal for the kids to ask where their normal teacher was for that day. I ensured to be kind and open-minded to all the children's needs so that they could continue their education until their normal teacher returned. Caillou Goes Back To School (Season 3, Episode 3) From Caillou Recommended Age: Two to Five Years Old Caillou's mother wakes him up to get ready for his first day back at school after a fun summer break. He's reluctant to get up at first until his mother reminds him that he can show off his new dinosaur lunchbox to his friends. Caillou jumps out of bed, excited to get ready for school. His anticipation builds when his mom says she's packing him a surprise lunch. Caillou waits patiently and eventually discovers that his mom packed him a dinosaur-shaped sandwich and a banana with his name engraved on it. What Kids Learn From 'Caillou Goes Back To School': Returning to school can be exciting when focusing on positive aspects like reconnecting with friends or eating a special lunch. When I watched this episode with my kids, my eldest daughter reminded me that she wants her lunch packed on the first day of school. She's like my little quality control member. Arthur's First Day Special (Between Season 24 & Season 25) From Arthur Recommended Age: Four to Eight Years Old Arthur is attending his first day of 4th grade, while D.W. is having her first day of kindergarten. While D.W. is nervous about her first day of school, Arthur is thrilled and anticipates an excellent experience. However, D.W. makes new friends and has a great first day of kindergarten. Arthur is bummed that his best friend, Buster, is in another class. What Kids Learn From 'Arthur's First Day': Any unexpected things could happen at the start of a new school year. Changes are difficult to handle, but there is a silver lining even in the unexpected. My daughter's best friend from kindergarten was also in her first-grade class. However, he got switched to the other first-grade class later in the year. It upset her a little at first, but she was happy to still see him at recess and lunchtime. Daniel Goes To School (Season 1, Episode 3b) From Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Recommended Age: Two To Five Years Old Daniel and Mom Tiger have a special visit to his new school, where they meet Teacher Harriet and learns school routines. He has fun looking around a/t the play centers, classroom library, and learning where to put his backpack and lunchbox. Daniel learns that almost everything he needs is at school, so he slowly starts giving toys and supplies back to Mom Tiger. Teacher Harriet agrees with Mom Tiger that Daniel can bring Tigey to help him feel more comfortable as he transitions into his first days at his new school. What Kids Learn From 'Daniel Goes To School': Learning about the school environment before the first day can help kids know what to expect and reduce their anxiety. Understanding that the school will have what they need to learn, grow, and be comfortable during their time there will take a lot of stress off their minds. My son was in a Head Start for a year and a half, and now he's going to attend preschool at the same facility where my daughter attends elementary school. We have a preschool orientation on August 27th, so he can explore the classroom, meet his teacher, and see his peers before the first day of school. Muttamorphosis (Season 1, Episode 1) From Teacher's Pet Recommended Age: Six to 10 Years Old Leonard Helperman is nervous about his mom being his fourth-grade teacher. The first day of school gets more stressful when his dog, named Spot, disguises himself as a human boy to attend school with Leonard. Spot's human alias name is Scott Leadready II. Scott's newfound popularity with the kids makes Leonard jealous. What Kids Learn From 'Muttamorphosis': Accepting change is the hallmark of growing up, and this happens for kids every school year. Children can also learn how to embrace who they are and how they uniquely contribute to society. Approaching and handling jealousy is important for building appreciation for others and acceptance of what you already have. Preschool Daze (Season 8, Episode 1) From Rugrats Recommended Age: Four to Seven Years Old Angelica and Susie start a new school year in the same preschool class together in this back-to-school episode of Rugrats. They engage in an intense competition to see who can be the best kid in Miss Weemer's class. The girls get into a paint fight that results in their teacher's favorite mug becoming broken. Susie and Angelica have to work together to fix their mess before Miss Werner notices. What Kids Learn From 'Preschool Daze': Friendly competition is ok once in a while. However, students should be kind and cooperative with their peers, prioritizing their individuality, which makes them 'the best' at being who they are. Not one person is better than another, as all people have unique qualities that make them special. Blue Takes You To School (Season 5, Episode 25) From Blue's Clues Recommended Age: Two To Six Years Old In this Blue's Clues episode, Periwinkle is elated to attend the first day of school. He loves participating in circle time and other activities such as feeding the class pet, Giggles the bunny. Along the way, Blue leaves clues for Joe to find so everyone can discover what her favorite part of the school day is. Periwinkle is upset that he has to leave school with Joe and Blue, but Joe assures Periwinkle he will be back the next day. What Kids Learn From 'Blue Takes You To School': The school day can be so fun and engaging that it may be hard to leave all your friends and experiences until the next day. Kids will learn that school will be there again for more interaction and that it's best to get rest at home to be ready for the next day's adventures. I always love asking my eldest daughter to name at least one fun activity she did in school that day so I can see what she's learning. Stuff'll Kill Ya (Season 3, Episode 10) From As Told By Ginger Recommended Age: Nine to 13 Years Old Ginger, Dodie, and Macy start their first days of freshman year at Lucky High School. Ginger's freshman honors courses are assigning her boatloads of homework. With her new hectic high school schedule, Ginger starts relying on buying multiple caffeinated beverages called Mocho Loco Frothinator. She believes the caffeine will keep her awake and constantly productive to handle all her responsibilities. However, Ginger starts becoming more irritable with friends and family, falling asleep in class, and being late to school. Her mother, Lois, realizes her daughter's caffeine addiction and forbids it going forward, urging her to get a good night's sleep. What Kids Learn from 'Stuff'll Kill Ya': Quick fixes to solve problems cause more harm than good. Instead, budgeting time and energy can help older kids with more school responsibilities to balance their duties without compromising sleep and their overall well-being. Zowie's School Daze (Season 6, Episode 7a) From Rolie Polie Olie Recommended Age: Two To Five Years Old Olie sees that Zowie is anxious about her upcoming first day of school. He suggests that everyone in the family play pretend school with Zowie so she knows what to expect. Spot the dog joins Olie, Zowie, and their parents as they turn their living room into a classroom. The make-believe game is so much fun for Zowie that her first-day woes eventually go away. What Kids Learn From 'Zowie's School Daze': Learning through play can help ease anxieties about upcoming new experiences, even with the first days of a new school year. This tactic works great if you cannot visit the school before it opens for the new year. It's cute when I see my eldest daughter and only son pretend they're playing school because it's helpful for my son, who is starting preschool this year. Back To School (2nd Webisode) From Pocoyo Recommended Age: Two To Five Years Old \Pocoyo is the only one among his friends who is not excited to return to school. He would rather relax at home and play with his toys than go to learn at school. He's ok with playing independently at first, but then he feels alone when he realizes all his friends are at school. Pocoyo decides to give school a try, and his friends help him gather the supplies he needs. What Kids Learn From 'Back To School': Attending school offers many opportunities for learning and growth that otherwise may not be accessible by staying home and just playing. While learning can be done in-depth with the right homeschooling curriculum, attending a school outside of the house could also be engaging and fun. It all depends on the child's personality, learning style, and the approach a parent takes to education. School Daze (Season 2, Episode 4) From Clifford's Puppy Days Recommended Age: Three To Six Years Old Clifford's owner, Emily Elizabeth, and the other human owners among his animal friends all go back to school for the season. They decide they want to have a school day of their own. However, the friends want to act more as teachers than as students, which puts a rift in the chosen activity. It overwhelms Clifford so much that he falls asleep a little before Emily Elizabeth comes home. When he wakes up from his nap, he and his friends play school again and take turns teaching each other. What Kids Learn From 'School Daze': Sharing roles and responsibilities within a fun activity makes it more engaging and interactive. Listening to each other's ideas and maintaining flexibility helps to ensure cooperation within the group. I always remind my eldest daughter of the importance of teamwork and collaboration with her peers so they can achieve their goals with group projects. She's admitted to having to do all the work before on a group project, and I gave her tips on how she can split responsibilities with her peers. Back To School (Season 1, Episode 21) From Peppa Pig Tales Recommended Age: Two To Six Years Old Peppa is having a fun Christmas break. While she's excited to return to her playgroup, she's sad about Christmas coming and going so quickly. She wants to keep having fun on the holiday. Daddy Pig acknowledges Peppa's sadness and disappointment about Christmas being over, but he reassures her that the playgroup will also be fun, like the holiday festivities they just had. What Kids Learn From 'Back To School': When a special time comes to an end, especially after a holiday or summer break, it's normal to feel upset about those fun moments being over. Returning to the school routine can also be fun, even if it feels monotonous at times. I can already tell my eldest daughter will have mixed feelings about starting second grade. She will be excited to see her friends again, but I know she will miss our camping trips and other summer-themed day trips we have taken the past few months when she returns to school in September. Back To School (Season 5, Episode 16) From I Am Weasel Recommended Age: Eight To 12 Years Old IR and Weasel have to attend the fourth grade again in this back-to-school cartoon special. They're attending the same school as their friends, Cow and Chicken. Events such as a football game during gym class take place throughout the episode, where IR's team wins against Weasel's team. At the end of the episode, Weasel wins a Nobel Prize for Physics because of how he explains concepts to his class. What Kids Learn From 'Back To School': Learning of any subject can happen at any age. A child should keep learning their favorite subject and not stop at anything if it's their passion. Even if it means going back to basic learning, taking steps by steps to enhance knowledge is the best path. My daughter claims she knows everything there is to know about art, so she can become an art teacher. I told her there are always new concepts to learn about art and many other school subjects. Are your kids prepared for this coming school year? Whether they are entering preschool for the first time or a higher grade, these back-to-school cartoons can help them prepare for the upcoming changes with confidence and anticipation. Learning relatable situations, such as meeting new teachers and experiencing different circumstances, can help children get through their first-day jitters. Solve the daily Crossword
