Fundraiser supports Baton Rouge group's mentoring program
The group has a mentoring program centered around young male students in grades 6-12. The fundraiser will provide scholarships to 13 seniors this year and fund other program initiatives. Students in the program learn about financial literacy, career readiness, leadership and so much more.
The group offers collegiate support as well to students at Southern University and Louisiana State University, and the group provides services to female students, too.
The fundraiser is set for 8 p.m. at L'Auberge Casino & Hotel. Click here for more information about the organization and its fundraiser.

Southern University lands record-setting former LSU running back
The post Southern University lands record-setting former LSU running back appeared first on ClutchPoints. Weeks before the start of the football season, Southern University has landed a record-setting running back that could improve its fortunes in the SWAC. Former LSU running back Trey Holly was spotted at the Jaguars' Tuesday practice, causing wide speculation that he had indeed joined the team. Southern University head coach Terrence Graves eventually confirmed his addition to the roster. 'He got enrolled in school, so we're going to give him an opportunity to work out here,' Graves said. 'He paid his way, he got admitted in school, and we're going to give him an opportunity to be a part of this program.' Landing Holly, a former four-star recruit, is a huge addition to a Jaguars team that is looking to reclaim their spot atop the SWAC West. Holly finished his career in high school as one of the most accomplished players in the history of Louisiana football. Over five seasons, starting in eighth grade, he amassed 10,532 rushing yards, shattering the state's all-time record. He totaled 160 touchdowns, with 146 coming on the ground. In his senior year, he ran for 2,694 yards and 38 touchdowns, guiding Union Parish to the LHSAA Division III title game. Across his career, he recorded 51 games with 100+ rushing yards and averaged an impressive 159.4 yards per game. His stellar high school career earned him the distinction as the fourth-best running back in the nation. Holly played three games for LSU in 2023, recording 110 rushing yards and a touchdown. His time was cut short after a February 2024 arrest led to suspension. While the attempted second-degree murder charge was dropped, he still faces weapons-related charges. Holley could be a great addition to the Jaguars' offense after the team lost former star RB Kendric Rhymes, who entered the transfer portal at the end of the season and committed to Tennessee State University. It will be interesting to see where Holley lands on the Jaguars' depth chart this fall. Former HBCU star leaves University of New Orleans
The post Former HBCU star leaves University of New Orleans appeared first on ClutchPoints. After joining Master P and the University of New Orleans in the Spring, Jamal Gibson is heading back to the HBCU basketball ranks with a new team. Xavier University of Louisiana announced that Gibson is committing to the program in a shocking move. Before transferring to the University of New Orleans, he played for Southern University of New Orleans. Advertisement Standing at 6'8″ with no prior playing experience, Jamal Gibson still managed to make a huge impact on the court. During the 2023-2024 season, his first with the team, Gibson excelled, averaging 21 points and 15.8 rebounds per game while leading the nation in total rebounds. He shattered several Southern University of New Orleans basketball records, including single-season points (579), rebounds (453), and double-doubles (27). Carrying his momentum into the 2024-2025 season, Gibson continued to dominate, achieving his 43rd consecutive double-double with a remarkable 26-point, 20-rebound game against Wilberforce University. His exceptional play earned him numerous conference and national honors, and he capped off the season by reclaiming his Player of the Year awards for both offense and defense. It seemed as if the University of New Orleans was a perfect landing spot for Gibson, as he wasted no time in committing to the program. After entering the transfer portal on April 1st, he was confirmed as a Privateer just two days later, on April 3rd. At this time, it's not known why he departed the program shortly after joining it in April. But, he now joins a strong XULA program that finished 20-10 (18-6 in conference) on last season. The team made the NAIA tournament but lost to Avc Maria 88-84 in overtime. Jamal Gibson's specific skillset could be an asset for the team as they look to stay competitive and continue their culture of winning, as they haven't had a losing season since the 2016-2017 season when they went 10-20 and 6-6 in conference. Could LSU Baseball land SWAC Player of the Year out of the transfer portal?
LSU baseball could be in a position to land another top transfer portal prospect. Cardell Thibodeaux entered the portal on Tuesday in search of his third school. He spent 2025 at Southern University, winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards. In his breakout junior year, Thibodeaux batted .435 with 71 RBI, 18 home runs, 13 doubles, and three triples. He also swiped 23 bases. The outfielder started 49 games and now has a chance to move up the college baseball ladder. Thibodeaux played his first two seasons of college baseball at Louisiana-Monroe. A dip in production playing time as a sophomore led him to make a switch to Southern, which paid off as he recorded the best year of his career. Would Thibodeaux fit at LSU? The Tigers may return their entire outfield for 2026, but also need help at the plate with slugger Jared Jones off to the MLB. Thibodeaux proved his abilities to see the ball and make things happen when he gets on base, but facing SEC pitching would be an adjustment. At five-foot-eight, it's unclear if Thibodeaux could find the same power he did in the SWAC, but he would give the Tigers a versatile weapon to challenge for starting time.
