Cillian Murphy's Role in "28 Years Later" Franchise Has Been Clarified
Yara Sameh Cillian Murphy is coming back to the '28 Days Later' franchise — but fans will have to wait patiently. Director Danny Boyle revealed in interviews with Business Insider and IGN that Murphy, who starred in the original '28 Days Later' in 2002, will not star in the upcoming '28 Years Later," but will appear in the ending of its 2026 sequel, 'The Bone Temple.' 'He is in the second one,' Boyle told IGN . 'I shouldn't give away too much. I'll get killed.' Boyle and writer Alex Garland conceived '28 Years Later' as the start of a new trilogy. The franchise revival, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes, was filmed back-to-back with its follow-up, '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,' which is directed by Nia DaCosta. A trilogy-capper remains in development and could be greenlit if '28 Years Later' becomes a box office hit. Boyle hopes that incorporating Murphy, who is coming off of a best actor Oscar win for 'Oppenheimer,' could also help secure financing for the third film. 'All I can say is you have to wait for Cillian, but hopefully he will help us get the third film financed,' Boyle told Business Insider. To IGN, 'Although each story [in the trilogy] completes itself, there's a handover section to the next film as well. So it's very ambitious. We haven't got the money for the third one yet. It will depend how the first one does, I guess. But hopefully, if we do okay, they'll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody's standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.' Boyle also shared with Business Insider that getting Murphy on board for the trilogy helped him get approval to film '28 Years Later' with iPhones: 'You promise them Cillian Murphy, that's quite a deflection of any technical concerns. They soon forget. We nakedly used that to get our own way. What better promise could you make?'. Boyle's original '28 Days Later' was one of the first blockbuster roles for Murphy. He led the thriller as Jim, a man who awakens in a hospital to discover the United Kingdom has collapsed amid an undead apocalypse. Fans have speculated that Murphy could return to the franchise, with some even believing that a zombie in the first trailer for '28 Years Later' was played by the actor. It's actually an art dealer and acting newcomer, Angus Neill. '28 Years Later' releases to theaters June 20 from Sony Pictures. Cillian Murphy's Status for 28 Years Later Sequels Confirmed
Ever since the announcement of 28 Years Later and its subsequent sequels, fans have wondered if Cillian Murphy would be in any of the movies. Now, director Danny Boyle has given us an answer. Speaking to IGN, Boyle revealed that Murphy will not be in 28 Years Later, but is in the film's sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which is scheduled for release on January 16, 2026. However, Boyle wouldn't say how much or in what capacity he's in the movie, joking that he 'shouldn't give away too much.' What Boyle did give away, though, is that Murphy will also be in the third and currently untitled entry in the planned trilogy, the status of which depends on the success for the first two. 'There's a coda… it's not a coda, it's the epilogue or an end theme at the end of the first film [28 Years Later] that gives you a handover to the second film,' said Boyle. 'Although each story completes itself, there's a handover section to the next film as well. So it's very ambitious. We haven't got the money for the third one yet. It will depend how the first one does, I guess. But hopefully if we do ok, they'll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody's standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.' Boyle's interview also shed some light on what to expect from the movies. He revealed that the three films run together as one big story, led by Spike, played by Alfie Williams in 28 Years Later. The first two films were made back-to-back due to availability for many of the actors. Boyle also opened up about his future with the franchise, saying he'd love to come back for the third film, but stressed that a lot of the future 28 Years Later projects hinge on how successful the first movie is when it opens on June 20, 2025. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors There's been a lot of back and forth about whether or not Cillian Murphy appears in the upcoming "28 Years Later" to reprise the role of survivor Jim. The film's release is only a couple of weeks away, and we finally have a definitive answer from director Danny Boyle. The filmmaker says Murphy will appear in the trilogy springing out of "28 Years Later", but he won't be in the first film that's releasing on June 20. Read More: Star Wars Icon Says He's Done With The Franchise Speaking to IGN, Boyle explained, "Well, it's three films, a trilogy of films which have connecting characters ... We've shot the first two back-to-back, and that was for logistical reasons, actor availability reasons, and for story reasons as well. They're literally continuous." 28 Days Later is hard to find 28 Days Later is hard to find Sony Pictures Nia DaCosta directed the second film, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple", which hits theaters January 16, 2026. "[Cillian Murphy] is in the second one," Boyle confessed. "I shouldn't give away too much. I'll get killed." Whether or not Murphy appears in the third film seems to be dependent only on one thing: whether or not the first movie, "28 Years Later", is successful enough for a third movie to happen. "There's a coda... it's not a coda, it's the epilogue or an end theme at the end of the first film ['28 Years Later'] that gives you a handover to the second film," Boyle said. Unconfirmed reports suggest the "Oppenheimer" star is a favorite to play the villainous Voldemort in the upcoming "Harry Potter" reboot series. The rumors have sparked enough interest that even the former Voldemort, Ralph Fiennes, has given his thumbs up to the casting. "28 Years Later" releases in theaters June 20, 2025. Danny Boyle confirms Cillian Murphy will appear in the '28 Years Later' sequel
The upcoming sequel to the zombie horror franchise "28 Days Later" won't feature Cillian Murphy, but director Danny Boyle has promised there's more Cillian to come. After " 28 Years Later" opens in theaters on June 20, Boyle will step aside for the next installment, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which will be directed by Nia DaCosta (2021's "Candyman") and premiere on January 16, 2026. The film will mark the first appearance of Murphy's character Jim since the original 2002 movie, which is set in a dystopian United Kingdom in amid zombie apocalypse caused by a virus. "She gets a bit of Cillian at the end," Boyle told BI of DaCosta while speaking about her helming "The Bone Temple." "All I can say is you have to wait for Cillian, but hopefully he will help us get the third film financed." That's right, Boyle has plans for another "28" movie after "The Bone Temple," and he's on board to direct it — though Sony, which is releasing "28 Years" and "The Bone Temple," hasn't committed yet. Sony did not respond to comment for this story. "28 Days Later" was a sensation upon its release in 2002, earning over $85 million worldwide on a budget of roughly $10 million. The film was credited as groundbreaking, both as one of the first mainstream movies to be shot with digital cameras, and for how it redefined the zombie genre with fast-moving undead characters (as opposed to the quiet creep of zombies in "Night of the Living Dead"). But the journey to continue the franchise has been an arduous one for Boyle. When the "28 Days Later" sequel "28 Weeks Later" was released five years after, Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland were not involved. Boyle and Garland (who, since writing "28 Days Later," has gone on to direct "Ex Machina," "Civil War," and "Warfare") spent years working on a third movie. At the same time, producers of the original were fighting over the franchise rights. By 2022, around the time of the original movie's 20th anniversary, the rights reverted back to the producers, and after a bidding war, Sony came out on top, agreeing to release "28 Years Later," a sequel, and, possibly, a third movie, making a new trilogy. "28 Years Later" focuses on an island community in the UK that has survived the virus for decades. It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. Speaking with BI, Boyle was transparent that he's using Oscar-winner Murphy's celebrity as a bargaining chip to get the third movie made. But Murphy has already helped Boyle get "28 Years Later" without even showing up on screen. The Oscar-winning director said that when he had to sell Sony on his idea of shooting some of the movie's footage with iPhones, it was a promise that Murphy would be involved that got his idea to use camera phones approved. "You promise them Cillian Murphy, that's quite a deflection of any technical concerns, they soon forget," Boyle said with a laugh. "Yeah, we nakedly used that to get our own way. What better promise could you make?"
