21 detained in anti-vice raids in Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya
KUALA LUMPUR: A prostitution ring operating out of two locations in Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya was busted with the arrests of 21 individuals, including women from Japan, Russia, and Uzbekistan following an operation by the police. The operation, codenamed Ops Moda, was carried out by Bukit Aman CID Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division (D7) at about 6.30pm on Thursday (July 17) following a tip-off from the public. Bukit Aman CID acting director Deputy Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the raid targeted a hotel and a serviced apartment that were believed to be used as venues for the illicit activities. "A 44-year-old local man, believed to be a pimp, was detained along with 20 women suspected of offering sexual services," he said when contacted on Saturday (July 19). The women included two locals aged 26 and 37, eight from China, three each from Mongolia and Uzbekistan, and one each from Japan, Russia, Vietnam and Laos. DCP Fadil said the syndicate was operating online, advertising services through websites featuring images of the women dressed provocatively. "The websites listed various sex packages, with prices ranging between RM400 and RM1,000. Payments were made directly to the women," he said. He added that the group used hotel rooms on separate floors and rented apartment units to avoid detection by the authorities. "Customers would make bookings via phone numbers displayed on the websites and were only given the location and room numbers upon arrival," he said. Various items were seized including 59 condoms, 21 towels, 21 mobile phones, 16 access cards and RM4,470 in cash believed to be earnings from the sex trade. "A total of 16 foreign women were remanded for 14 days until July 30. "Two local women and one each from Vietnam and Laos were remanded for a day, while the local male suspect was remanded for three days," DCP Fadil said. The case is being investigated under Section 372B for soliciting, as well as Sections 55B and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations.

Online gambling den busted in Serdang apartment raid, 496 illegal immigrants detained
SERDANG: Authorities have uncovered an illegal online gambling hub operating from three units of a four-storey apartment block in Pusat Bandar Putra Permai here. The gambling centre was busted during a joint raid by the Immigration Department, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the General Operations Force on Tuesday (July 15) night. Immigration deputy director-general of operations Jafri Embok Taha said preliminary investigations revealed that the three units were registered under the names of three local individuals, based on utility bill records obtained. "When officers arrived at the residential units, the premises were already empty. It is believed that the suspects had fled, leaving behind only a few tablets, monitors, chairs and tables. 'We have handed over the case related to the discovery of the gambling hub to MBSJ for further investigation and action," he said during a press conference after the operation. He added that all three houses were equipped with closed-circuit television cameras to monitor movements outside, and their operations targeted customers among undocumented migrants residing in the apartment. Jafri Embok said 496 illegal immigrants were taken to the Semenyih Immigration detention centre after 741 foreigners were inspected in the operation, which ran from 10pm to 1am on Wednesday. "The suspected offences include violations under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007," he said. He added that similar joint operations will be conducted periodically, and the public is reminded not to employ, harbour or house foreigners without valid travel documents on their premises. Jafri Embok also said the department is implementing the Migrant Repatriation Programme (PRM) 2.0, running from May 19 this year until April 30, 2026. Under this programme, undocumented migrants are allowed to return to their home countries by paying a RM500 compound and a RM20 special pass fee. "In total, only RM520 is charged. In Selangor, there are four locations for the programme's implementation: Shah Alam, Kelana Jaya, Port Klang and Kajang," he said. - Bernama

Cops seize illegal e-waste worth RM2.1mil in Melaka
MELAKA: Melaka police have dismantled an illegal electronic waste (e-waste) processing facility at the Bukit Rambai industrial area here believed to be processing foreign waste. Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said approximately 300 tonnes of aluminium ingots, estimated to be worth RM2.1mil were seized during the raid at around 11am on Tuesday (July 15). He said the processed materials were allegedly intended for export to China. DCP Dzulkhairi said the operation followed a week-long surveillance effort conducted in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE) and the state Inland Revenue Board. "The same facility was fined for a different offence last year but today (July 15) we found it had resumed operations, this time smelting the e-waste. "We believe the activity has been ongoing for the past three to four months," he said during a press conference at the site today. "This plant had been turned into an illegal transit point for e-waste processing with the materials being refined here before being exported abroad," he said. DCP Dzulkhairi expressed concern that Malaysia continues to be used as a dumping and processing ground for e-waste following strict bans on such activities in several developed countries. "This is why some parties are exploiting the situation, turning Melaka into a hub for disposing of and processing e-waste, which poses serious environmental and public health risks," he said. DCP Dzulkhairi said unprocessed materials, including various electronic components such as remote controls and CCTV cameras, were also confiscated during the raid. He said a total of 25 foreign workers, aged between 20 and 45, were detained during the raid. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act and Section 55(1)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Photo by Bernama GEORGE TOWN - A South Korean man was sentenced to three months in jail by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to overstaying his permitted time in Malaysia. Jeon Eunjin, 55, entered the plea after the charge was read in English before Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi. The sentence is effective from his arrest on June 30. According to the charge sheet, Jeon, a construction worker in South Korea, remained in Malaysia without valid reason after his 90-day social visit pass expired on Feb 10. He was accused of committing the offence at the Criminal Investigation Division office of the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) at 12.30 pm on June 30. Jeon was charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and is punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of not less than RM10,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. Earlier, National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) lawyer Nur Adilla Zaharuddin appealed for a minimal fine, citing that Jeon is married with two children and had saved court time and cost by pleading guilty. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Danial Amir Saari, however, urged the court to impose a sentence proportionate to the offence. In a separate charge heard in the same courtroom, Jeon was also fined RM2,000 or six months' jail in default, after pleading guilty to lodging a false police report. He was accused of intentionally filing the report to prompt police to exercise lawful authority and open an investigation. The offence took place at 12.45 pm on June 28, also at the Timur Laut IPD. Jeon was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to six months' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. - BERNAMA
