EAIC detects irregularities in issuance of medical visas

The Star2 days ago
PETALING JAYA: Medical visas have been issued to foreigners without going through the proper procedures, says the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC).
In a statement on Sunday (July 27), the EAIC said a special task force led by its commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Razali Ab Malik had looked into the issuance of visas by Immigration Department officers.
"The task force identified several misuse of powers by officers involved who approved medical visas for foreigners although the documents submitted were not completed and had not met the criteria under the Malaysian Immigration Circular No. 10/2001," it said.
The EAIC added it had referred the investigation to the Attorney General, with recommendations to charge those responsible under the Penal Code, Immigration Act 1959/63 and Passports Act 1966.

Authorities clamp down on foreigners operating 'prebet sapu' in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) and Immigration Department have joined forces to monitor and take action against foreigners, including undocumented migrants, suspected of operating illegal private taxi services in Kuala Lumpur. These activities have raised public concern over safety and the livelihoods of licensed taxi and e-hailing drivers. Kuala Lumpur RTD director Hamidi Adam said a special operation was launched earlier this month following complaints from the public. The operation was prompted by an incident on July 13 near an embassy along Jalan Ampang, where enforcement teams were deployed to monitor the area closely. "Several offences were detected during the operation, including illegal parking on yellow lines, cracked windscreens, tinted windows, and the absence of official e-hailing stickers. "However, no foreign-driven vehicles were found offering "prebet sapu" services during the surveillance," Hamidi was quoted as saying by Harian Metro. He added that the RTD has carried out several other targeted operations since early last year, including Ops Transporter and Ops PEWA. Ops Transporter focused on busy public areas such as LRT Taman Melati, Wangsa Walk Mall, Setapak Central and KL East Mall. It resulted in 23 vehicles seized and 12 notices issued. "A total of 10 local individuals and 13 foreigners from countries including Afghanistan, Somalia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Yemen and Egypt were issued summonses and compounds under the Road Transport Act and the Land Public Transport Act," Hamidi said. Offences detected included operating prebet sapu services, driving without valid licences, misuse of vehicle licences, and illegal window tinting. Ops PEWA, conducted throughout last year, led to 243 summonses and the seizure of 101 cars and motorcycles involving foreign drivers. Hamidi urged the public to report illegal taxi activities through RTD's official complaint channels. Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said his department remains vigilant in monitoring foreigners involved in such operations. "The Immigration Department does not remain idle and takes public concerns seriously," he said. He added that even though no formal complaints have directly linked undocumented migrants to "prebet sapu" activities, enforcement action would be taken if immigration laws are breached. "Anyone suspected of abusing their immigration pass will be arrested and investigated immediately," Wan Mohammed Saupee said. He said that all foreigners must possess valid travel documents and immigration passes. Misuse of such documents, including working without permission, will result in stern action under the law. The joint effort by the RTD and Immigration Department comes amid growing concerns over illegal taxi operations run by foreigners, particularly near embassies and major roads in Kuala Lumpur.

15 Bangladeshis on KL flight detained at Kuching airport, suspected counterfeit stamps found in passports

The Bangladeshi men are seen at KIA. – Photo from Facebook/Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia Sarawak KUCHING (July 29): A total of 15 Bangladeshi men were detained straight after they arrived at Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday afternoon. The Sarawak Immigration Department said in a Facebook post that the men were detained at around 12.50pm upon their arrival on a flight from Kuala Lumpur. 'Initial checks revealed that none of them had valid entry records in the Immigration Department's system. 'Further inspection uncovered immigration stamps suspected to be counterfeit in their passports, believed to have been used to deceive authorities into thinking they had entered the country legally,' the department said. Preliminary investigations found that each man is believed to have paid between RM18,000 and RM20,000 to syndicate agents as a fee to enter Sarawak. 'All the detained illegal immigrants have been taken to the Semuja Immigration Detention Depot and are currently being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63,' added the department. Ex-clerk claims trial to charge of CBT involving RM199,491

SEREMBAN: A 36-year-old woman claimed trial at the Sessions Court here to a charge of committing criminal breach of trust involving RM199,491 belonging to a cooperative where she was previously employed as a clerk. Noorazwin Zullkifli pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam on Tuesday (July 29). The mother of three young children was charged with committing the offence between Feb 2, 2023 and March 22, 2024 at the Kg LBJ Johnson Cooperative office in Bandar Enstek in Nilai. She had allegedly transferred the cash into her account online using a point of sale terminal belonging to the cooperative. The accused was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between one and 14 years upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Syamimi Farhana Muhammad A. Aziz then told the court her team was offering the accused bail of RM30,000 with one surety pending remention. She also asked that the accused be ordered to surrender her passport if she had one to the court. Noorazwin's lawyer Ahmad Muzhaffar Abdul Razak pleaded for a lower bail as the accused had to provide for her three young children and only earned RM1,800 a month working at a convenience store. He said her husband worked in Kuala Lumpur and only returned home occasionally. Judge Mohamad Kamil then set bail at RM12,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender her passport to the court, to report at the nearest police station once a month till her case is disposed off and to stay away from witnesses. He fixed Sept 9 for mention.
