Petrol smuggling attempt in Sandakan foiled, two held

SANDAKAN: An attempt to smuggle RM27,000 worth of petrol to a neighbouring country was foiled by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), here, early Wednesday. According to Sandakan Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Captain Muhamad Suhairy Hussain, a cargo boat was spotted about 0.8 nautical miles west of Pulau Berhala, which tried to flee when approached by a MMEA patrol vessel, but was intercepted at 1.35am. 'Upon inspection, 62 jerry cans containing a total of 1,550 litres of petrol were found and believed to be intended for smuggling to a neighbouring country. 'The skipper and crew failed to present valid identification documents, while the boat itself did not have a valid operating licence,' he said in a statement. Two individuals, aged 42 and 38, were detained in the operation. The case is being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1962, Immigration Act 1959/63 and Sabah Ports and Harbours Enactment 2002 for offences including smuggling of controlled goods, unlawful entry and operating a vessel without valid documentation. KUALA LUMPUR – Offering sex services during office hours was one of the tactics used by a prostitution den in the capital, exposed by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department during a raid on Tuesday. The premises, operating on the upper floor of a two-storey shop lot, is believed to have targeted foreign customers. It was understood that customers were offered the services of guest relations officers (GROs) for prices ranging from RM50 to RM300 per session. A woman believed to be a prostitute was detained in the raid conducted on Tuesday. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said the raid was conducted at about 3pm following intelligence and public complaints. 'A total of 25 individuals were detained, including 14 foreign women and three local men aged between 20 and 61. 'They comprised nationals from Indonesia, Bangladesh and India. Also detained were two local men believed to be caretakers of the premises,' he said on Tuesday. The operation was carried out by a team of officers and personnel from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department on Tuesday. He said investigations revealed offences including abuse of social visit passes and the absence of valid travel documents. 'Action was taken under Section 56(1)(d), Section 15(1)(c), and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963,' he added. No gender bias in PR approval rates for foreign spouses, says Saifuddin
KUALA LUMPUR: There is no significant disparity in the approval rates of permanent resident (PR) applications between foreign husbands and wives of Malaysian citizens, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The Home Minister said a task force under the ministry and the Immigration Department had resolved all 19,205 backlogged entry permit applications lodged between 2013 and 2023, comprising 14,918 applications from foreign wives and 4,287 from foreign husbands of Malaysian citizens. 'Of these, the approval rate for foreign wives stood at 22.3%, while that for foreign husbands was slightly higher at 22.7%. 'This indicates no significant difference in approval rates between the two categories,' Saifuddin said in a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday (July 29). He was responding to a question from Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid who questioned why foreign husbands face stricter PR requirements, calling for gender-equal and family-friendly policies. Saifuddin stressed that all applications are assessed fairly and equitably, though different considerations apply depending on the applicant's gender. 'For instance, applications from foreign wives take into account welfare concerns and issues of neglect, while those from foreign husbands are assessed with regard to potential misuse of marriage as a means to obtain residency,' he said. Saifuddin explained that PR applications must first go through the Entry Permit process governed by Section 10(1)(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which empowers the director-general of Immigration to issue permits under specific terms and procedures. The issuance of the MyPR identification card is carried out in accordance with the National Registration Act 1959 [Act 78] and Regulation 5(3)(b) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, he added.

40 held in Esscom's operation in Tawau, Kalabakan

TAWAU: A total of 40 individuals were arrested during a three-day integrated operation in the Tawau and Kalabakan districts, which concluded last Saturday. The joint operation, led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom), targeted illegal immigrants, drug-related activities, smuggling, and various other offences. Of those detained, 21 were illegal immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia. They have since been handed over to the Immigration Department in Tawau for further action under Sections 15(1)(c) and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos said the operation, a collaboration involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Armed Forces (ATM), Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), and other federal, state, and local agencies, aimed to restore public order and enforce laws across the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). 'Raids were carried out at the old Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Jetty, Road Check Point (RCP) Kalabakan, and several suburban settlements and villages known for illegal activity,' he said in a statement on Monday. The remaining 19 detainees included two suspected drug dealers, who were brought to Tawau District Police Headquarters for urine screening under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Poisons Act 1952. The authorities also seized 125.64 grammes of syabu, 41 bottles of ketum juice (1.5 litres each), and RM950 in cash. Enforcement personnel inspected 146 individuals, 26 premises and three vehicles. Several violations were identified, including illegal electricity connections in settlements, which caused an about RM750,000 in losses to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB). Action was taken under Section 61(3) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024. The operation also saw the issuance of 35 traffic summonses and two vehicle inspection notices under the Road Transport Act 1987 by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and traffic police. Victor said the operation was part of Op Sanggah Esscom, a continuous nationwide effort to bolster existing enforcement by PDRM, ATM and APMM. 'Esscom remains committed to our principle of 'No Day Without Operation' to prevent foreign criminal elements from threatening the peace in Eastern Sabah,' he added. EAIC urges criminal charges against immigration officers for medical visa fraud
PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) has called for criminal proceedings against Immigration Department officers involved in the unlawful issuance of medical visas to foreign nationals. The findings stem from a probe led by EAIC Commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Razali Ab Malik, which uncovered systemic abuse in granting social visit passes under the medical category. The investigation scrutinised approval protocols, collected witness testimonies, and seized documents before concluding that officers bypassed legal requirements. 'The probe revealed power abuse where incomplete applications were approved despite violating the Malaysian Immigration Circular No. 10/2001,' stated the EAIC. The case has been escalated to the Attorney-General's Chambers under Paragraph 30(1)(c) of Act 700. Charges may be filed under the Penal Code, Immigration Act 1959/63, and Passports Act 1966. - Bernama
