On Wednesday night all entered cars will turn one lap at top speed, the order of which is determined by a Tuesday night draw of numbers. The top 10 drivers then go into a shootout with the top two times from that session setting the front row for Sunday's race. The remaining cars are dropped — as evenly as possible, along with the top two qualifiers — into two 60-lap qualifying "duels" to be run Thursday night that set the field from spots three through 40. The finishing order for the first duel determines the inside row slots and the finishing order from the second duel sets the outside. Top drivers and best bets for the Daytona 500 Restrictor plate racing presents a randomizing element that makes handicapping the results challenging, and that's reflected in BetMGM's odds. Three drivers enter the week with identical 12-to-1 odds and 10 drivers come in at 20-to-1 or better. Ryan Blaney is among the favorites to win his first career Daytona 500 this weekend. Teams must put in the request at least 90 days ahead of time and only Trackhouse Racing did so on behalf of four-time Indianapolis 500 champion Hélio Castroneves. Castroneves will still attempt to qualify for the race and if he posts one of the top 40 times, there will be only 40 cars running on Sunday. If he doesn't make it on time, the Daytona 500 will have its largest field in 10 years. Seven-time series champion and winner of the 2006 and 2013 Daytona 500s Jimmie Johnson will attempt to make the field in a third entry for the Legacy Motor Club team that he owns. Johnson, 49, has run in the event twice since retiring from full-time racing in 2020, with a best finish of 28th.

Daytona 500 stopped for rain after 11 laps with President Trump in attendance

The 67th Daytona 500 is under a red flag for a rain delay after 11 laps at Daytona International Speedway Austin Cindric, the 2022 Daytona 500 winner who started second, was leading ahead of Ty Dillon, pole-sitter Chase Briscoe, Joey Logano and Bubba Wallace. The caution waved on Lap 10 at 2:14 p.m. for rain in Turn 2, and the 41 cars were brought to the pits a few minutes later. The start of the race was moved up more than an hour Thursday because of a forecast for inclement weather. The green flag waved at 2:06 p.m. after prerace ceremonies that included President Donald Trump addressing the 41 drivers over the team radios from the presidential limousine known as 'The Beast,' which took part in the pace laps ahead of the field. President Trump arrived at Daytona International Speedway at around 1:30 p.m. and was scheduled to return to his resort in Palm Beach, Florida, midway through the race. He is the second sitting president to attend the Daytona 500, having attended in a 2020 race (which also was delayed by rain and eventually postponed to Monday). President George W. Bush gave the command to start engines at the 2004 Daytona 500.

Start of 67th Daytona 500 moved up an hour

With rain looming in the forecast Sunday, the start of the 67th Daytona 500 has been moved up by an hour. Fox will begin its race broadcast at 1:30 p.m. ET with the green flag scheduled to wave shortly after 2 p.m. ET. The Daytona Beach weather forecast predicts a high of 81 degrees and a 21 percent chance of rain at 2 p.m. The chance of rain will grow to 47 percent by 5 p.m. That would put the finish of the 500-mile race (which usually takes at least three hours) in doubt with the original green flag time of 3:11 p.m. ET. Daytona International Speedway said its gates and hospitality areas will open at 9 a.m. ET and parking lots at 6 a.m. ET. Pitbull still will be performing in a prerace concert. Nate Ryan,
