Clement and Varsho homer as the Blue Jays reach 70 wins with a 5-1 victory over the Cubs
TORONTO (AP) — Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays became the first AL team to reach 70 wins by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1 on Tuesday night. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits as the AL East-leading Blue Jays (70-50) improved to 23-11 against NL opponents. The Cubs have dropped five of seven. In those five losses, they scored a total of six runs. Toronto right-hander José Berríos (9-4) allowed two hits, both singles, in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out three. Pitching in front of a season-high crowd of 43,003, Berríos won his fourth straight decision. He is 7-1 with a 3.62 ERA in his past 10 starts. Starting for the first time since Sept. 25, 2024, at Philadelphia, Cubs right-hander Javier Assad (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings. The Cubs reinstated Assad off the 60-day injured list. He had been sidelined by an oblique injury. Alejandro Kirk's RBI single was one of three Blue Jays hits in the first inning. Clement hit a three-run drive off Assad in the fourth. Varsho extended Toronto's advantage with a leadoff blast against Ben Brown in the eighth. It was Varsho's 12th homer. Chicago's Michael Busch hit an RBI single off Tommy Nance in the seventh. Brendon Little came on and struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong to strand runners at second and third. Blue Jays infielder Andrés Giménez went 1 for 3 with a walk in his return from a sprained left ankle. Giménez last played July 4. The New York Mets have wrestled back the NL East lead from the Philadelphia Phillies, going 7-4 since the All-Star break, but the Phillies are right on their tail. The Mets only have a half-game advantage over their fiercest division rival, and they are coming off two straight defeats to the San Diego Padres — the latest being a demoralizing 7-1 defeat. At the very least, there is time for the Mets to upgrade their roster via trade prior to the start of the stretch run. Their offense has been middling, and with Juan Soto leaving their 7-1 loss to the Padres on Tuesday early after hitting a ball off his foot, the Mets may have a greater sense of urgency now to acquire an insurance policy in the outfield. With that, according to the sources of Mark Feinsand, the Mets 'have been one of the more aggressive teams' in the pursuit of Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr., with one even calling them the 'frontrunner' for the 27-year-old outfielder's services. The Mets aren't alone in their pursuit of Robert, however. Feinsand also mentioned that the Padres and Phillies 'have interest' in the White Sox outfielder, although the level of interest that they have in actually swinging a trade remains to be seen. If anything, the Mets are the team that appears to be in the most need of outfield reinforcements, especially at center field. While the platoon of Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor are holding it together for New York, acquiring someone who could be a longer-term solution at the position, like Robert, could make a trade with the White Sox that much more worthwhile. The Mets, however, will have to overcome the White Sox's reported exorbitant demands in any Robert trade. Is Luis Robert Jr. the answer for the Mets at center field? On paper, acquiring Robert should not be this hard for any team. He is struggling badly for a moribund White Sox team, slashing .206/.295/.348 to go along with just 11 home runs and 43 runs batted in. Robert is set to make $20 million over the next two seasons, provided his team picks up both club options. At this rate, Robert is not playing at a level that makes him worth that money. But with the way he started his career, perhaps a change of scenery could work wonders for him, and maybe a fresh start with the Mets is all he needs to get his once-promising career back on track. Marlins extend road winning streak to 11 with 12-2 win over Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Miami Marlins extended their franchise-record road winning streak to 11 with a 12-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. It's the longest road winning streak in the major leagues since the Phillies won 13 straight away from home in 2023. Eury Pérez (2-2) made his sixth start for the Marlins since returning this season from Tommy John surgery and only two hits including Matt McLain's solo homer, his 10th, in the first inning. Pérez struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. After Nick Martinez (6-9) retired the first six batters he faced, the Marlins collected six consecutive hits off him in the third, including a two-run double by Xavier Edwards to take a 7-1 lead. Martinez, who made his first start at Great American Ball Park since taking a no-hitter into the ninth against the Padres, allowed a career-high 10 earned runs on seven hits. The Marlins caught a break in the seven-run third inning when Agustín Ramírez's high-hopper went just over the head of Reds' third baseman Noelvi Marte to drive home another run and keep the rally going.
