The Toronto Blue Jays answered their surge in the standings with a bold move at the trade deadline, acquiring former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians. Though the team has been performing well without him, the addition of Bieber seemed to be just what the Blue Jays needed to make a push to the playoffs followed by a deep run. If he can recapture even a modicum of his top form, he'll be a key contributor alongside starters Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer. But the Blue Jays might not have him in the rotation for very long. He has yet to make his big-league debut with his new team as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery. And he seems likely to opt out of his contract this winter. "The righty is on the wrong side of 30, and at this point in his career, he likely won't receive a long-term deal," Curt Bishop wrote for FanSided, listing Bieber as a star who is "absolutely declining" his option. "(But) he's looking awfully impressive in the minors so far, and if he recaptures some of his previous Cy Young form, there are teams that will be eager to give him a three- or four-year contract (likely including playing time incentives)."
