Is Blood of My Blood based on a book?

Fans of the Outlander prequel series are curious about the source material ‌ Audiences got a double bill special after Starz confirmed they would be dropping the first two instalments in one go, with episode three hitting screens next week. ‌ The show is a prequel to the highly successful Outlander, which is adapted from the novels by American author Diana Gabaldon. ‌ Each season of the show has roughly adapted one book in the series, with some divergences. However, season seven adapted material from two novels and it looks like the eighth and final outing will be moving away from the source material. The huge divergence comes as the Outlander TV series wraps up before Gabaldon has finished writing her book series. ‌ The bestselling author working on the 10th and final novel in her epic saga titled A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out. Many Outlander and Blood of My Blood fans are curious to know about the basis for the prequel series, here's the lowdown. ‌ Is Blood of My Blood based on a book? No, Blood of Blood simply takes its cue from the Outlander novel series by Gabaldon. The story itself isn't based on a novel in the same way as Outlander is. Brian Fraser (played by Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie's (Harriet Slater) passionate romance is referenced in passing in the Outlander novels, rather than being a central plot point. ‌ Similarly, Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and their tragic deaths in a car crash are mentioned by Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) in the Outlander books. ‌ Apart from this, Blood of My Blood doesn't really have any source material and the writers have been given free rein to take the story in any direction they choose. One of the key decisions that Blood of My Blood's showrunner Matthew B. Roberts made in the prequel series was to imagine what if Claire's parents had survived and had both travelled back through time. This game of what if serves as the jumping off point for Blood of My Blood's premise, with Henry and Julia being instrumental to Brian and Ellen's romance coming into fruition. ‌ Moreover, this paves the way for Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser to eventually be together in Outlander. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con last month, Roberts said his change had ben given author Gabaldon's blessing. ‌ He explained: 'She said to me it was a good idea. She didn't want to explore it herself, but at least she said, 'Go for it.' I thanked her and I went for it.' The writer expanded: 'But she's so on board. She actually wrote on the show, so you're going to see her episode too. So, I think she's fully committed to the show.' Gabaldon is very much involved in Blood of My Blood as a consultant and also wrote an episode of season one and co-wrote the finale with Roberts. Outlander season 8 will air on Starz and MGM+ via Prime Video in early 2026

Outlander's Diana Gabaldon addresses Jamie Fraser's fate in final book

Outlander creator Diana Gabaldon is working on the final book Outlander creator Diana Gabaldon has shared the destiny of her renowned protagonist Jamie Fraser, portrayed by Sam Heughan, in her book series, reports the Scottish Daily Express. Currently penning the 10th and concluding volume of the Outlander saga, entitled A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out, she recently took to Facebook to address fans' concerns sparked by the seemingly portentous title: "No, that doesn't mean Jamie's going to die." ‌ Clarifying the confusion, Gabaldon stated it was not a "death blessing", but the Blessing of St. Michael, intended for a warrior on the verge of undertaking an essential and dangerous mission. ‌ The reassurance allows fans to temporarily set aside their worries - yet with Jamie's ghost making an appearance in the inaugural novel, and his lack of immortality established, it's inferred the character will eventually succumb. Many followers of the series anticipate that Gabaldon's final literary endeavour will offer closure regarding the enigma of Jamie's ghost. Over time, Gabaldon has peppered hints about this mysterious apparition that manifests in 1940s Inverness, immediately before Claire Fraser (interpreted by Caitríona Balfe) travels through the stones into Jamie's era. Among these veiled revelations, the author has intimated that the ghost seems to be a 25 year old Jamie as he was at Culloden. ‌ Yet, Gabaldon also tempered this with the notion that ghosts have the autonomy to choose how they appear, detached from the age they were at the time of death. She further expounded that contrary to some theories, the phenomenon isn't Jamie performing any kind of astral projection across time - rather, it is indeed his spirit from after his demise. Gabaldon has not yet set a completion date for her forthcoming novel, A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out. ‌ However, she did offer fans a sneak peek into the book with an excerpt that depicts Jamie in his later years, showing signs of frailty. Meanwhile, fans eagerly anticipate the eighth and final season of Outlander, which Starz has hinted will be released "soon". ‌ The television series and the books have taken significantly different paths, especially after the season seven finale suggested Faith Fraser might have survived, despite being stillborn in the novels. The upcoming season is expected to provide its own explanation for Jamie's ghostly presence, although it remains unclear if this will align with Gabaldon's literary version, which is likely to be published post the airing of season eight. With the drama set to pursue a narrative distinct from the original books, audiences should brace themselves for two uniquely crafted endings to the Outlander saga across the respective mediums.

Outlander fans think Jamie's fate is sealed as Diana Gabaldon reveals final book name

The author of the books unveiled the name of her last novel and gave an explanation. Last night, Outlander fans were left concerned for their favourite character Jamie Fraser as Diana Gabaldon unveiled the title of the last book in the Outlander series. Fans have been desperate to know the name of the tenth and final book, where Claire and Jamie's love story will be concluded. And now, Diana gave fans a teaser of the new novel but revealed that it doesn't yet have a publication date. The books and the series differ slightly and the final series of the show has already been filmed. ‌ The title of the book is A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out which made fans think something is going to happen to Jamie, however, Diana said that is not the case. ‌ In a Facebook post on her page, Diana explained: "I thought I'd let you know what the title of Book Ten is (so we can stop calling it Book Ten, which is slightly boring…). "First, A Word of Warning: THE BOOK IS NOT FINISHED. IT HAS NO PUB DATE (because the publishers wisely won't set one until they have the full manuscript in their eager hands). "I AM STILL WRITING IT. YES, I DO KNOW HOW IT ENDS. NO, I'M NOT TELLING YOU. "NO, YOU CAN'T ORDER IT YET, BECAUSE THE PUBLISHERS DON'T HAVE PAGES SET UP FOR ORDERS BECAUSE THERE IS NO PUB DATE AND BECAUSE I HAVEN'T TOLD THEM WHAT THE BOOK IS CALLED. Until now. ‌ "The title of Book Ten of the OUTLANDER series (and yes, this is the final book of the main series, though there may be other companion books and side stories, depending on how long I live…) is A BLESSING FOR A WARRIOR GOING OUT." However, she followed up with: "(NO, that doesn't mean Jamie's going to die. It's not a death blessing, it's the Blessing of St. Michael, said for a warrior about to go and do something important and possibly dangerous. There are quite a few people in this book who qualify for that blessing, believe me…)" Diana then goes on to reveal an extract from the book, we're not one to give away spoilers so you can read the full thing here. ‌ However fans flocked to the comments to try dissect the meaning behind the title. ‌ Another wrote: "Oh wow! That is really interesting title! Much to think about." Another said: "I'm absolutely thrilled! Thank you for the title reveal and the excerpt. This made my week." One added: "What a fabulous title. So much comes to my mind when I read it." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Outlander author issues stark Jamie Fraser warning as she confirms title of final book

Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has announced the title of the series' final book, but there's some disappointing news for fans of the time-travelling romantic drama Outlander enthusiasts may be feeling bittersweet emotions as the author behind the tale has finally unveiled the title of her concluding book, which sadly signifies an end to Jamie and Claire Fraser's saga. Fans have been enamoured with the romantic chronicles of Jamie (portrayed by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe), originating from Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels, eagerly awaiting their return to television screens for the supposed eighth season this year. ‌ In a thrilling development, Diana Gabaldon has revealed that the final chapter in her historic Outlander series is arriving, sharing its much-anticipated name with adoring fans. ‌ The last installment, promising to conclude Jamie and Claire's epic narrative, has been named A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out—a title that sparked fevered speculation among the fanbase until Gabaldon herself clarified on Facebook: "No, that doesn't mean Jamie's going to die." Gabaldon elaborated: "It's not a death blessing, it's the Blessing of St. Michael, said for a warrior about to go and do something important and possibly dangerous. "There are quite a few people in this book who qualify for that blessing, believe me.." Heightening anticipation further, the author tantalisingly shared an excerpt from the novel's onset. ‌ The sneak peek into A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out, set "post-wedding", sees William making an entrance, initially observed only by Fanny. Provoking intrigue regarding Jamie's condition, the excerpt narrates: "Jamie rose slowly from his chair on the porch-not using his stick, I saw-and drew himself up, eyes fixed on William." William arrives on his horse, "mud-spattered, windblown and breathing hard", as he tells Jamie, "I need your help". ‌ The narrative describes Jamie moving closer to his son, concluding with: "He reached William and put a hand on his arm. "'You have it,' he said simply. 'Come in.'" ‌ In addition to revealing the title on the birthday of Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, author Diana Gabaldon has confirmed that the book is not yet complete and lacks a publishing date, although she knows how the story will conclude. To the disappointment of fans, it's been confirmed that A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out will not be adapted for television. Outlander on MGM+ is set to conclude later this year or potentially in early 2026 with its eighth season, with production expected to wrap in September 2024. So whatever ending Gabaldon envisions for the 10th book, it will remain exclusively in written form.
