Legendary Wrestling Announcer Jim Ross To Undergo Surgery
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross provided a significant update on his health during a live episode of his Grillin JR podcast. Ross, who revealed earlier this month his diagnosis with colon cancer, confirmed that his surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning, May 27th. Ross shared that the cancer has been located in two places, but expressed a resilient mindset heading into the procedure. "Getting ready for surgery, and that's always stressful but I've prepared myself mentally and physically to endure the situation," Ross said on the show. He mentioned doctors anticipate a six-day hospital stay and that the surgery will be less invasive, though he was awaiting more specific details. Fortunately, he also noted that he is "not in any pain" currently. Despite the upcoming surgery, Ross remains focused on his career and has no plans to step away from wrestling. While he stated, "I'm thinking I'll really slow down after the surgery. I'll talk to the doctor, and see what he says. I'll try to really slow down when this is over," he also believes he can maintain his previous AEW schedule. "I could still do my schedule I had, but I don't know if anybody else believes that. I believe it. I still would love to do the pay-per-views in AEW, but I don't know if Tony will want me on, I don't know." He definitively added, "I don't plan on retiring, I plan on getting healthy and getting well and doing something for somebody and we'll see how that works out." He shared a touching moment: "I was at home and I got a call from Steve Austin. And when we got off the phone, I looked at my phone and we talked for 43 minutes." They call you, they talk to you, and at the end of the conversation, they tell you they love you. That's what Steve did. So that's what I got. And that cheered me up. And it made me feel strong and vibrant." He also praised AEW President Tony Khan, stating, "Tony Khan called me, which was nice. You know, the Khan family has done an amazing job of taking care of JR since I signed with their company. He's very talent-friendly. Maybe too friendly at times." Looking ahead, Ross is optimistic about attending AEW All In: Texas later this summer. When asked about the possibility, he responded enthusiastically, "Hell ya, I think so. Why not?" Due to his current focus on his health, Ross mentioned he did not get a chance to watch the wrestling shows from the past weekend, saying, "I did not. I was sleeping." Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. AEW star Will Ospreay recently made some bold statements regarding the talent depth and overall quality of All Elite Wrestling compared to WWE. During an interview with Josh Martinez of Z100 on Superstar Crossover, Ospreay stated AEW's superiority in the current wrestling landscape. The discussion arose when Ospreay was asked about the upcoming AEW All In: Texas event in July 2025, which could potentially run on the same weekend as a reported WWE Saturday Night's Main Event broadcast. When questioned why fans should choose AEW, Ospreay was direct. Ricky Havlik/AEW "Because we smoke them in every field of wrestling," Ospreay stated bluntly. He then immediately added, "Mate, we're just better." While championing AEW, Ospreay did offer respect for individual performers within WWE. "Like, I respect them. I respect every single one of them there, they're all vets, they all know what they're doing, they're great at their job, they understand getting people on their feet..." However, he quickly pivoted back to his overarching belief in AEW's roster and product. "...but we are so much more of a better wrestling company than them. Our guys smoke them every single day of the week." Ospreay specifically named several WWE talents he holds in regard. "They've got good guys like GUNTHER. They've got great guys like Orton. They've got good guys like Chad Gable. I respect all of them." He concluded with a final assertive remark. "...But on our worst day, we smoke all of you guys." I love Will Ospreay and he's right Anyone can see AEW has been better than WWE by a mile in 2025 — Ace Humphreys 🏴🦢 (@Ace109610) May 14, 2025 Both companies have different audiences. Saying one 'smokes' the other is incorrect as their products are geared towards their independent audiences. For example, I'm not a fan of AEW, watched for several years, but I'm ultimately not their audience and that's ok. Despite this, WWE has reportedly shown significant interest in signing "The Aerial Assassin" at various points over the years. Ultimately, Ospreay chose to sign a landmark full-time deal with AEW in late 2023, officially beginning his tenure in early 2024. Since joining AEW, and even prior, Ospreay has not shied away from making comments that could be perceived as critical of WWE's structure or creative environment. Ospreay has also voiced his preference for certain production styles, sometimes critiquing WWE's frequent camera cuts in favor of a presentation more akin to NJPW.
