CSS top scorer says denied group of his choice

Mir Musawwar Ali Mithani, a young candidate from Larkana who topped the nationwide Central Superior Services (CSS) Examination 2023, has reportedly been denied his preferred group allocation despite his exceptional performance. In a letter addressed to President Asif Ali Zardari seeking justice, Mithani stated that despite securing the highest position, he was assigned to Pakistan Audit and Accounts Service instead of his first-choice group. He said that topping the exam while representing Larkana district and Sindh the homeland of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was a matter of immense pride for him. Mithani has appealed for fair treatment, urging authorities to rectify what he perceives as an unjust allocation. Per rule, the high-scorers are allowed to choose the group they want to join, the rest of the successful candidates are assigned groups like Foreign Affairs, Administrative Services, Police, Customs, Accounts and Audit, Railways, and such by the Federal Public Service Commission. Per available data, in 2023, the regular CSS exam in Pakistan saw 28,024 applications. However, only 13,008 candidates actually took the written exam. Out of these, a mere 401 passed, and ultimately, 210 were recommended for positions, resulting in a 2.96% success rate for those who appeared in the written stage. Additionally, a Special CSS Examination was held in the same year. This exam received 21,947 applications, with 15,245 candidates participating in the written portion. Following this stage, 519 candidates passed, and after all assessments, 141 were declared successful, yielding an overall success rate of 3.20% .

President Murmu on Monday led the tributes by lauding the contributions of civil servants across the country. Taking to X, she wrote, 'Greetings to all civil servants on Civil Services Day! Your role in public service, your contribution to policy making and implementation have impacted the well-being of citizens and development of the country. May you play a commendable role in enabling the country realise its ambitious objectives and set new benchmarks in good governance.' Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised the tireless commitment of India's bureaucrats. In his message on X, he stated, 'On Civil Services Day, extending best wishes to our civil servants. Whether it is executing the schemes and policies or delivering good governance, our civil servants have served with a firm commitment. May this day further strengthen their commitment to serve the nation.' Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his greetings, recognising the significant role civil servants play in ensuring national progress and citizen welfare. 'Greetings and warm wishes to all civil servants and their families on Civil Services Day. They have been playing an important role in furthering India's progress and ensuring the citizen welfare. May this day inspire them to continue serving the nation with renewed zeal and excellence,' he posted on X. Civil Services Day is observed annually on April 21 to honour the hard work and dedication of India's civil servants. The day commemorates the historic address delivered by India's first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, to the probationers of the Administrative Services in 1947, in which he famously referred to civil servants as the 'steel frame' of India. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also marked the occasion by highlighting the integrity and dedication of civil servants. 'Hearty congratulations and best wishes on 'Civil Services Day' to all the dutiful civil personnel who are the basis of the progress of society and nation! Your devotion and dedication are the biggest identity of your work. Your tireless hard work and honesty give new impetus to positive change in the society every day,' he posted on X.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The City of Sioux City has appointed an interim city manager as it searches for a permanent replacement. The city council voted Monday afternoon to appoint Assistant City Manager Mike Collett as interim city manager after former city manager Bob Padmore retired from his position Friday. Collett also serves as the director for Administrative Services, Sioux Gateway Airport/Brigadier General Bud Day Field, and transit departments. With his new interim role, he will also oversee the daily operations of the city. Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott said that Collett has been an essential part of the Sioux City leadership team for years. 'His knowledge of the City's operations makes him the perfect choice to step into this role during this transition period,' Scott said in a statement in part. Sioux City seeking input on 2026-2029 Strategic Plan Sioux City's city council has contracted MGT Impact Solutions to conduct a national search for a new city manager. The search is expected to happen over the next few months, a release said. Padmore served the City of Sioux City for more than 25 years and announced his retirement in January. The city celebrated his retirement on Thursday.
