Russia ready to support Africa's digital independence

Russia is ready to support African countries in developing technologies that promote self-sufficiency and sovereignty, Aleksey Andreev, Russia's trade representative in Morocco, has stated. In an interview with the newspaper L'Opinion on Tuesday, Andreev said, 'Russia is ready to become a strategic partner of Morocco in the implementation of the national digital strategy Morocco Digital 2030.' He also stressed that while Africa is rich in resources, data has become the most valuable asset in today's world – adding that Russia is not interested in exploiting these resources, but in equipping African nations with tools to manage and protect them. Russia offers 'not only software products, but an ecosystem of digital solutions that guarantee technological sovereignty and growth,' he said. The proposed solutions include digital transformation projects, development of smart cities and systems for public administration, financial services, and business operations. He pointed to several priority domains for cooperation, including AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, automated control systems, telecommunications, and smart transportation. Unlike many Western companies, Russian developers prioritize localization and flexibility over rigid licensing models, he said. 'Russian companies offer data hosting on local servers, adapting products to the requirements of domestic brands and working closely with local companies – an essential factor for countries seeking to strengthen their technological sovereignty,' the trade representative explained. The initiative is in line with a broader strategy to strengthen economic ties with Africa. In November, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that trade between Russia and African countries reached a record high of $24.5 billion in 2023, despite obstacles created by the West. According to estimates from the Agroexport Center, Russia's agricultural exports to Morocco reached nearly $280 million in 2024, marking a threefold increase compared to the previous year. Weather Alert Forecasts 2-Day Snowfall in Morocco

Rabat – Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology has announced a two-day snowfall alert, with altitudes exceeding 1,800 meters. The weather office said snowfalls of 15 to 30 centimeters are expected in the provinces of Beni Mellal, Azilal, Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, and Midelt. The same weather concerns Tinghir, while snowfall between 10 and 15 centimeters is expected during the same period in Boulemane, Ifrane, and Khenifra. Several Moroccan provinces have been experiencing snowfall and thunderstorms this month, but observers believe it is not enough to tackle drought affecting the country's agricultural season for six consecutive years. Moroccan crops have gravely suffered under the drought, including the wheat harvest which is predicted to decline by approximately 50% in the 2024-2025 season, according to estimates from experts. Morocco's government is turning to importing wheat and other agricultural products to meet local demand. Last year in November, the Russian Grain Union said Morocco imported 222,000 tons of wheat from Russia. The number represents a notable increase compared to 119,000 tons during the same period in 2023. Data compiled by the Agroexport Center said Russia became the leader among wheat suppliers to Morocco. Russia surpassed France, which had been the largest seller to the North African country. Morocco's import of wheat reached more than one million tons in 2024, alongside legumes and barely, among other agricultural products like honey. In total, the North African country's agricultural products imports from Russia amounted to nearly $280 million last year. Tags: delay in rainfall in MoroccoHeavy snowfall

Moroccan Agriculture Imports from Russia Valued at $280 Million in 2024

Rabat – Morocco's agricultural products imports from Russia amounted to nearly $280 million in 2024. International information group Interfax shared new data compiled by Agroexport Center, noting that the number represents three-fold compared to 2023. 'Thanks to more competitive price and quality, Russia became the leader among wheat suppliers to Morocco, surpassing France, which had been the largest seller to this country for many years,' the center said. Among agricultural crops Morocco imported from Russia includes wheat as the country suffers from consecutive years of drought. Morocco's import of wheat reached more than one million tons last year. Its imports also include legumes, and barley, among other products like honey. Citing Agroexport data, Interfaxx stressed that the potential for Russia's exports of agricultural products is estimated at $350 million, with cereals and vegetable oils topping the demands among other categories like beef, and others. In December last year, the Russian Union of Exporters and Producers of Grains conveyed Russia's interest in supplying Morocco with one million tons of wheat this season. Russia also aims to increase supplies to Morocco to 1.5 million tons in the future. Statistics show that Russia's wheat exports to Morocco have so far amounted to 650,000 million tonnes since the start of the 2024-2025 season. This makes Morocco t one of the top 10 buyers of Russian wheat. The two countries signed a memorandum agreement in December, formalizing arrangements between Russian exports and Moroccan grain traders as part of the two countries' consistent determination to boost bilateral ties, trade, and cooperation across different sectors. The primary goal of the deal is to boost the intention of both parties to engage in projects aimed at boosting Morocco's grain supply. Tags: algeria and russiaMorocco wheat
