Angry Birds 3 announced for 2027 as video game adaptations take over box office

Paramount Pictures has officially announced the release of Angry Birds 3, set to hit theaters on January 29, 2027, marking a bold return to animation amid a booming market for video game movie adaptations. The news arrives as the Minecraft movie stuns at the box office, showing growing global demand for game-based entertainment. Unlike the previous two installments, Angry Birds 3 will be produced by DNEG Animation and Sega Sammy Group, the new parent company of Rovio, without involvement from Sony Pictures, who distributed the original films. Keke Palmer and Lily James will join the original voice cast, promising new comedic dynamics. The first Angry Birds Movie (2016), directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, grossed $352.3 million globally, while the sequel, Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), brought in $147.8 million, totaling over $500 million worldwide. The second film, directed by Thurop Van Orman, received critical praise and holds a 73% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it one of the most successful video game-based animated films pre-COVID. This new sequel comes at a time when gaming IPs are thriving in Hollywood. Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, sequels like Super Mario Bros. 2, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, and Mortal Kombat 2 are also in development, highlighting a trend of studios betting big on beloved video game franchises. The Angry Birds franchise originally launched as a mobile game in 2009, quickly evolving into a multimedia brand. Paramount's move into animation with this title aligns with past efforts like The SpongeBob Movie, Wonder Park, and PAW Patrol: The Movie. With new talent, a fresh studio, and momentum from current box office trends, Angry Birds 3 is poised to soar once again in 2027.

‘Angry Birds Movie 3' Set for 2027 Release by Paramount

Paramount Pictures has added a third 'Angry Birds Movie' to its release slate, setting it for January 29, 2027. Paramount takes over as distributor from Sony Pictures, which released the first 'Angry Birds Movie' from Rovio Animation in 2016, grossing $352 million worldwide. The film yielded a 2019 sequel that didn't fly nearly as high with $152.2 million, though insiders at Paramount say that the films have seen robust viewership on streaming over the past five years. Rovio returns as producers on the film with Sega, which acquired Rovio and 'Angry Birds' in 2023 and which has partnered with Paramount on the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' films. Namit Malhotra will also produce through his company Prime Focus Studios, in partnership with Flywheel Media, One Cool Group, andDentsu. DNEG, the animation studio behind 'The Garfield Movie,' 'Nimona' and the upcoming 'The Cat in the Hat,' will animate the film. Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Rachel Bloom and Danny McBride are set to reprise their roles as the birds Red, Chuck, Silver and Bomb. Joining them is an ensemble voice cast that includes Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson, Lily James, Marcello Hernandez, Walker Scobell, Sam Richardson, and Nikki Glaser. John Rice, director of the first 'Angry Birds Movie,' will return and direct from a screenplay by 'Angry Birds Movie 2' director Thurop Van Orman. The return of 'Angry Birds' to the big screen comes as video game films continue their rise at the box office. As Universal and Illumination plan a sequel to their $1.36 billion hit 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' Paramount has enjoyed continue success with the 'Sonic' films, whose third installment grossed $491 million worldwide. 'Sonic 4' is also on Paramount's 2027 slate with a release in the spring. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. stunned Hollywood with a $313 million global opening weekend for 'A Minecraft Movie,' ranking among the top 5 highest opening weekends ever for the studio. An Incensed Charli XCX Categorically Refuses to Play Her Biggest Hit in Hilarious ‘Overcompensating' Trailer: ‘Are You Joking!'

Charli XCX has been slowly building up her acting resumé over the past decade with a series of voice roles in the Angry Birds Movie and UglyDolls and spots on TV shows including Gossip Girl and I'm With the Band: Nasty Cherry. But as she prepares to really dive into her actress era with a series of as-yet-unscheduled big screen projects, the Brat singer is warming up with a very funny cameo as herself in the first trailer for the upcoming Amazon Prime comedy series Overcompensating. In the teaser that dropped on Tuesday (March 25) for the show that debuts on May 15, Charli is booked to play a campus gig and she's absolutely livid about a beloved song the promoters want her to perform. 'Do you think I want to play f–king 'Boom Clap' in a f–king college,' she rages at a stricken-looking, headset-wearing stage manager trying to maintain her smile as she gets berated for asking the singer to play the pop jam that was featured on both the soundtrack to the weeper drama The Fault in Our Stars and on Charli's second studio album, 2014's Sucker. The semi-autobiographical Overcompensating follows closeted former high school football player Benny (Skinner), who becomes friends with an outsider, Carmen (Wally Baram), who is trying his hardest to fit in. In addition to those two, the show also features regulars Mary Beth Barone (Black Mirror), Adam DiMarco (The White Lotus) and Rish Shah (Ms. Marvel), as well as Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, Kaia Gerber, and Owen Thiele. After setting the world on fire with her brat summer last year, Charlie is reportedly in talks for a role in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Narnia film as Jadis, the White Witch. She is also slated to appear alongside Jenna Ortega and Natalie Portman in The Gallerist, Gregg Araki's upcoming thriller I Want Your Sex, Daniel Goldhaber's Faces of Death remake and Julia Jackman's 100 Nights of Hero graphic novel adaptation, as well as producing the movie The Moment based on her original idea.
