Lee Chang-dong returns with Netflix's 'Possible Love'
Cannes-winning auteur's latest film reunites Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu Acclaimed director Lee Chang-dong returns to marquee filmmaking with Netflix's "Possible Love," the streamer announced Tuesday. The project marks Lee's first feature since his acclaimed psychological thriller "Burning" (2018). The Netflix film reunites Lee with powerhouse actors from past critically celebrated works. Jeon Do-yeon, who won for best actress at the Cannes Film Festival for Lee's "Secret Sunshine" (2007), will star alongside Sul Kyung-gu, the leading actor from Lee's loved earlier films "Peppermint Candy" (1999) and "Oasis" (2002). Jeon and Sul previously appeared together in three other films: "I Wish I Had a Wife" (2001), "Birthday" (2019) and Netflix's "Kill Boksoon" (2023). Zo In-sung ("The King" "Escape from Mogadishu") and Cho Yeo-jeong ("Parasite") will portray another key couple in the film. "Possible Love" follows two married couples whose contrasting lifestyles intersect in unexpected ways. As their worlds collide, cracks emerge in their seemingly stable routines. Lee co-wrote the screenplay with Oh Jung-mi, who collaborated with him on "Burning." The film is being produced by Pinehouse Film ― also behind "Burning" ― in association with Anonymous Content and NowFilm Co. An international art house favorite known for deeply reflective narratives, Lee has directed six features over three decades and remains a fixture at major film festivals. "Oasis" claimed Venice's special director's prize in 2002. "Poetry" (2010) won Cannes' best screenplay award, while "Burning" competed for the Palme d'Or and clinched the international critics' prize in 2018. Lee began his career as a high school teacher before transitioning to become a novelist then screenwriter and eventually filmmaker with 1997's breakthrough "Green Fish." The director also served as South Korea's minister of culture and tourism from 2003 to 2004. Last year, Penguin Random House published Lee's first collection of short stories translated into English, "Snowy Day & Other Stories." "Possible Love" marks Lee's first collaboration with Netflix. The film has just begun principal photography and no release date has been scheduled yet, Netflix said. The director's most recent work was the 2022 short film "Heartbeat," commissioned by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about depression.

Kodeih is set to direct from an original screenplay co-written with Mariana. The pair previously collaborated on Warsaw Ghetto-set short Alina and Maki & Zorro. More from Deadline 'The Year Of The Everlasting Storm' Co-Director Dominga Sotomayor To Helm 'Niebla' For RT Features - Cannes 'Call Me By Your Name' Producer Rodrigo Teixeira Wants "Imagined" Fraud Suit Tossed Out Willem Dafoe Alights For Robert Eggers-Directed 'The Lighthouse' Teixeira is producing under his RT Features banner alongside Mariana and Kodeih. Executive producers include Berta Marchiori for RT Features; David Levine and Jeff Okin for Anonymous Content; and Riccardo Maddalosso for Feig Finkel LLP. Marie-Lynn Nasrallah will serve as co-executive producer, Jennifer Haddad as associate producer, and Joshua Owen as co-associate producer. Wolves takes place in Beirut during Lebanon's real-life 2019 economic collapse and revolves around a young woman who is unable to withdraw her life's savings, which she needs to pay for her sister's uterus cancer surgery. They recruit a truck driver and an ex-militia fighter to hatch a daring all-night plan to take what's rightfully theirs from the corrupt banking system. But as their scheme escalates, so does the danger, forcing them to confront the true cost of survival, justice, and sisterhood in a city on the brink. The project dates back to May 2020, when Kodeih and Mariana were inspired by their own savings being stuck in Lebanon during banking crisis. The concept originated when the banks first shut off depositors and Mariana sent a DM to a friend asking: 'Do I need to write a heist movie about me stealing my own money?' This initial story idea was more than two years before a string of bank robberies that swept through Beirut. Shailene Woodley to Star in New York-Set Film ‘A Beautiful Journey' From Anonymous Federation, Gabman (EXCLUSIVE)
Shailene Woodley ('Big Little Lies') is set to headline 'A Beautiful Journey,' an English-language comedy-drama feature from French writer-director Nathalie Marchak ('Out of Instinct'). 'A Beautiful Journey' is being produced by Anonymous Federation, a joint venture between Anonymous Content and Federation Studios, and Gabman, the company founded by Valerie Garcia, who previously co-headed one of France's leading distribution shingles, Mars Films. More from Variety Ildiko Enyedi's 'Silent Friend,' Laszlo Nemes' 'Orphan' Lead Hungarian Projects at Cannes Film Market Robert De Niro Slams Trump as 'Philistine President' and Enemy of the Arts While Accepting Cannes Honorary Palme d'Or: 'This Isn't Just an American Problem' Chile Heads to Cannes: Sebastian Lelio, Diego Céspedes, Nicolás Acuña, Julio Rojas, Present Latest Buzz Titles Rosalie Cimino, a former top agent at Paris-based firm UBBA, will produce on behalf of Anonymous Federation, while Garcia will produce on behalf of Gabman. Principal photography will begin in the fall. Woodley will play Mary, an ex-swimming champion who now works as a mermaid at the New York Aquarium, struggling to raise her 7-year-old son, Lulu, on her own. When they get evicted, to protect him, she pretends they are about to embark on a beautiful journey. But in doing so, she's beginning to lose — and eventually find — herself. Cimino described the project as a ''Life is Beautiful' meets 'Captain Fantastic.'' Garcia pointed out the movie will have an uplifting dimension, revolving on the strong bond between a mother and her son. Marchak penned the script for 'A Beautiful Journey' with the support of a writing scholarship from Sundance. The script was included on the Inaugural Cannes Screenplay List, an initiative highlighting outstanding feature scripts by women and non-binary storytellers. 'Working with Shailene Woodley is a dream,' said Marchak, whose first feature film, 'Out of Instinct,' was released theatrically in 2017. 'She is a truly cinematic force — her fearless honesty and radiant depth will light up the screen as she leads us through Mary's tender, turbulent, and ultimately transformative journey.' Cimino and Garcia said, 'We are thrilled to embark on this exciting film with our visionary director, Nathalie Marchak. And today, we are tremendously proud to have the incredibly talented Shailene Woodley embody the lead role of Mary. Her immense talent will illuminate our film and will bring Nathalie's vision to life. Moreover, her dedication and artistry will elevate our story and resonate deeply with our audience.' Cimino said 'the script touched Woodley intimately and she loved it.' The pair also noted that the actor had already delivered a breakthrough performance as a young mother in 'Big Little Lies' which earned her an Emmy nomination. 'We didn't want to talk to her about her role in 'Big Little Lies,' but it's her manager who said: 'Shailene has already played the role of a mother and she's fan of the script, she wants to meet you, she wants to meet Nathalie!' The producer said she and Garcia are currently at Cannes and working on raising the financing for the movie and are aiming to start filming in the fall. The movie will shoot mainly in Europe, addition to a few days in New York for the outdoors scenes, Garcia said. 'A Beautiful Journey' will mark Woodley's first time working on a French project. Woodley had her first major role in 2008 with 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager' and later starred in 'The Descendants,' the 'Divergent' franchise and 'The Fault in Our Stars.' The actress is also a noted environmentalist and political activist who made headlines in 2016 for her arrest while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline. On getting Woodley on board for the movie, Cimino said her long-standing relationships with managers and agents have helped, but above all, it comes down to the 'very good script.' 'Once a good script starts circulating in an agency or management company, actors want good scripts. They want good stories, they want roles they can defend,' she said. Marchak, who holds an LL.M from Harvard Law School and a filmmaking certificate from New York University, previously penned and directed the TV series 'Les Siffleurs' and serves as VP of the French Guild of Authors, Directors and Producers (ARP). Additional key cast and the international sales agent will be announced in the coming days. Woodley is represented by CAA and Range Media Partners.
