Shailene Woodley to Star in New York-Set Film ‘A Beautiful Journey' From Anonymous Federation, Gabman (EXCLUSIVE)

Shailene Woodley ('Big Little Lies') is set to headline 'A Beautiful Journey,' an English-language comedy-drama feature from French writer-director Nathalie Marchak ('Out of Instinct').
'A Beautiful Journey' is being produced by Anonymous Federation, a joint venture between Anonymous Content and Federation Studios, and Gabman, the company founded by Valerie Garcia, who previously co-headed one of France's leading distribution shingles, Mars Films.

Rosalie Cimino, a former top agent at Paris-based firm UBBA, will produce on behalf of Anonymous Federation, while Garcia will produce on behalf of Gabman. Principal photography will begin in the fall.
Woodley will play Mary, an ex-swimming champion who now works as a mermaid at the New York Aquarium, struggling to raise her 7-year-old son, Lulu, on her own. When they get evicted, to protect him, she pretends they are about to embark on a beautiful journey. But in doing so, she's beginning to lose — and eventually find — herself. Cimino described the project as a ''Life is Beautiful' meets 'Captain Fantastic.'' Garcia pointed out the movie will have an uplifting dimension, revolving on the strong bond between a mother and her son.
Marchak penned the script for 'A Beautiful Journey' with the support of a writing scholarship from Sundance. The script was included on the Inaugural Cannes Screenplay List, an initiative highlighting outstanding feature scripts by women and non-binary storytellers.
'Working with Shailene Woodley is a dream,' said Marchak, whose first feature film, 'Out of Instinct,' was released theatrically in 2017. 'She is a truly cinematic force — her fearless honesty and radiant depth will light up the screen as she leads us through Mary's tender, turbulent, and ultimately transformative journey.'
Cimino and Garcia said, 'We are thrilled to embark on this exciting film with our visionary director, Nathalie Marchak. And today, we are tremendously proud to have the incredibly talented Shailene Woodley embody the lead role of Mary. Her immense talent will illuminate our film and will bring Nathalie's vision to life. Moreover, her dedication and artistry will elevate our story and resonate deeply with our audience.'
Cimino said 'the script touched Woodley intimately and she loved it.' The pair also noted that the actor had already delivered a breakthrough performance as a young mother in 'Big Little Lies' which earned her an Emmy nomination. 'We didn't want to talk to her about her role in 'Big Little Lies,' but it's her manager who said: 'Shailene has already played the role of a mother and she's fan of the script, she wants to meet you, she wants to meet Nathalie!'
The producer said she and Garcia are currently at Cannes and working on raising the financing for the movie and are aiming to start filming in the fall. The movie will shoot mainly in Europe, addition to a few days in New York for the outdoors scenes, Garcia said.
'A Beautiful Journey' will mark Woodley's first time working on a French project. Woodley had her first major role in 2008 with 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager' and later starred in 'The Descendants,' the 'Divergent' franchise and 'The Fault in Our Stars.' The actress is also a noted environmentalist and political activist who made headlines in 2016 for her arrest while protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.
On getting Woodley on board for the movie, Cimino said her long-standing relationships with managers and agents have helped, but above all, it comes down to the 'very good script.' 'Once a good script starts circulating in an agency or management company, actors want good scripts. They want good stories, they want roles they can defend,' she said.
Marchak, who holds an LL.M from Harvard Law School and a filmmaking certificate from New York University, previously penned and directed the TV series 'Les Siffleurs' and serves as VP of the French Guild of Authors, Directors and Producers (ARP). Additional key cast and the international sales agent will be announced in the coming days.
Woodley is represented by CAA and Range Media Partners. Marchak is represented by Time Art (France) and Paradigm (U.S.).

10 Must-See Movies at the 2025 Tribeca Festival

From spring into the start of summer, the festival season keeps on rolling. Cannes just gave a jumpstart to the movie year ahead, but the 24th edition of the Tribeca Festival, happening all over New York City June 4 through 15, is here with another ambitious, genre-crossing lineup. This year's festival — celebrating film, television, immersive storytelling, music, audio storytelling, iconic movie revivals, and more — boasts nearly 120 features across narrative and documentary forms. Tribeca also boasts a massive shorts program. The festival, which understandably dropped 'Film' from its name in 2022 two decades after starting in 2002 from Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff as a way to boost Lower Manhattan after September 11, offers its most musically inclined programming yet this year. Tribeca launches Wednesday, June 4 with the world premiere of opening nighter 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes,' an ode to the hit-making piano man. Elsewhere, Miley Cyrus' visual album 'Something Beautiful' also premieres (fun fodder for IndieWire readers: It's produced by 'Mandy' director Panos Cosmatos). Additional music documentaries include films about Counting Crows and Culture Club, while Billy Idol, Becky G, and Eddie Vedder will also perform following the world premieres of their documentaries. On the narrative side come new features led by Ethan Hawke ('She Dances'), Rose Byrne and Octavia Spencer ('Tow'), Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom ('Deep Cover'), Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney ('Everything's Going to Be Great'), Maika Monroe ('In Cold Light'), Guy Pearce and Cosmo Jarvis ('Inside'), Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman ('Oh, Hi!'), Logic ('Paradise Records'), Riz Ahmed ('Relay'), Nick Offerman ('Sovereign'), Finn Wittrock ('Westhampton'), and many more indie and blockbuster names. As for documentaries, highlights include 'Andy Kaufman Is Me,' a deep-dive into the comedy legend; the needs-no-explaining journalism documentary 'Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything'; Berlin winner 'Holding Liat,' produced by Darren Aronofsky; 'It's Dorothy!,' a portrait of the iconic 'Wizard of Oz' character through culture and history; 'Kerouac's Road: The Beat of a Nation,' about the influence and legacy of Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road'; and many more. Meanwhile, the festival features competitions for U.S. Narrative, International Narrative, Documentary, Best New Narrative Director, Viewpoints, and Shorts, with a starry lineup of jurors from in front of and behind the camera. Plus, join talent for in-person Q&As with reunions and retrospectives for films including 'American Psycho,' 'Casino,' 'Best in Show,' 'Kundun,' 'Meet the Parents,' 'Requiem for a Dream,' 'Shivers,' and more. IndieWire's staff has picked 10 films we've deemed must-sees or that we're most looking forward to — though the festival, of course, has much more to offer. The Kölsche Jung is having a birthday. Of course, we want to remember his left foot, with which Lukas Podolski conjured up many beautiful goals throughout his career. In the Polish first division, Poldi shows that he can still score beautiful goals at his age. Advertisement We can't get enough of Podolski's left foot. Why This Baby Name Has Shot Up More Than 100% in Popularity This Week

It's a girl! The hottest news in the preschool set is the arrival of Peppa Pig's little sibling. Speculation has brewed for months about whether Peppa would be getting a little sister or another brother. On May 30, the newest member of the Pig family made their debut — a sister! Not only that, but Peppa's sister's name was also announced: Evie, a name that means "life." She was named after Mummy Pig's aunt. Now, it's no secret that Peppa is a trend-setter. She's made preschoolers speak in faux English accents and say things like "sun cream" instead of sunscreen. She's beefed with celebrities like Adele and earned high marks for her album on taste-making music websites. But will the newest addition to the Pig family boost the baby name Evie? Evidence shows, she already has. The baby-naming website Nameberry keeps track of interest in names among its users. The site reports there's a 102% increase in interest in this week. The name is hot, and getting hotter! (Even Pokémon has declared 2025 the "Year of Eevee," but of course the Pokémon is spelled differently.) Then again, the Pig family may be jumping on a trend rather than starting it. The Social Security Administration keeps track of baby-name popularity in the United States going back to the year 1900, maintaining a list of the 1,000 most popular names each year. The name Evie actually dropped off the list in 1942, and stayed absent from it for decades — but not forever. In 2007, it re-entered the list as the 807th most popular name, and it's been steadily getting more popular ever since. Last year, it reached No. 284. The name Evelyn, which could use Evie as a nickname, is even more successful. Unlike Evie, Evelyn has been hanging around the SSA list since the 1900s. And while it was an extremely popular name at the turn of the century, it only managed to crack into the top 10 once in the 20th century, in 1915, when it was No. 10. But since the '90s, it's been steadily climbing, and Evelyn actually had its best-ever year last year, reaching the No. 8 spot on the SSA list for the first time. It's safe to say the name has already eclipsed Peppa itself, since Peppa doesn't appear at all on the SSA top 1,000. (Neither do similar variants, like Pippa, or names that could use Peppa as a nickname, like Philippa.) George, now the middle child, is also in the middle of Evie and Evelyn in terms of name popularity: His name is No. 124 on the SSA list. It'll be interesting to see how these shift as the Pig family, now a family of five, finds its new footing.
