Travelers at Little Rock airport see change as REAL ID enforcement begins
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – REAL IDs are now required to board a flight or enter certain federal buildings. Though May 7 is the enforcement date, TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl said those who do not have a REAL ID can go through extra screening at the airport to board a flight. 'If you do show up with a non-compliant state-issued ID, you will be okay. It just may take some additional time for screening,' Stahl said. 'So, we do urge folks to plan accordingly and leave a little extra time when traveling to the airport.' Arkansas revenue offices issue record number of REAL IDs Tuesday, Sherwood office forced to redirect customers after running out A REAL ID or another compliant form of identification, like a passport or military ID, will be required to board a domestic flight and enter certain federal facilities. Several travelers who have their REAL ID told KARK 4 News at the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport that they thought it was a good idea. 'We want our airports to be safe and want to make sure everyone coming through TSA is vetted and safe and secure,' traveler Anthony Todd said. 'I try to have all the Is and Ts when I'm traveling,' another traveler, Phyllis Gordon, said. 'It's just a tense time and I want everything all together.' REAL ID takes effect in Arkansas. So, what if I don't have one? Officials with the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration say this week there were thousands of people going to get their REAL IDs. They say all revenue offices will continue to issue REAL IDs after Wednesday for those who do not have an immediate need for one. DFA officials said the deadline is when the state will begin to enforce it, and not the last day to receive one. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Arkansas revenue offices issue record number of REAL IDs Tuesday, Sherwood office forced to redirect customers after running out
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansans are coming out in droves to get a REAL ID ahead of the enforcement date on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration said Arkansas revenue offices issued a record number of REAL IDs on Tuesday, noting that they issued 10,000 on Monday and expect the number to be as high as 15,000 on Tuesday. REAL ID enforcement starts this week: 5 things to know According to the DFA, the Sherwood Revenue Office was forced to redirect customers to nearby offices after running out. The DFA spokesperson added that a belief that May 7 was the final day to get a REAL ID is leading to a widespread sense of urgency to get a REAL ID. 'That is not the case. DFA will issue the REAL ID for years to come,' the spokesperson said. 'Unless there is an urgent need (a flight in the next day or two), Arkansans can wait and obtain it next week or next year.' DFA officials said they expect revenue offices to be replenished on Wednesday and encourage Arkansans to check back with their nearby revenue offices if they visited one that ran out Tuesday. 'Again, we want to be sure Arkansans understand tomorrow is not the deadline to obtain a REAL ID,' the DFA spokesperson said. 'Their regular license or state ID will certainly remain valid after May 7. For those with an upcoming flight, a U.S. Passport or Department of Defense ID will work in place of a REAL ID to board a flight.' Arkansas DFA moves to online license and ID so revenue offices can remain on REAL ID
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The surge in REAL ID applications has led an Arkansas agency to change its typical operating procedure. A spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration said Wednesday that the agency would move to issuing duplicate driver's licenses and IDs online so the state revenue offices could continue to focus on issuing REAL ID. First-time licenses will continue to be processed at revenue offices. REAL ID takes effect in Arkansas. So, what if I don't have one? Officials said the move to online will go into effect on May 12. REAL ID is the result of a federal law requiring heightened ID requirements for certain official purposes, such as boarding domestic flights, accessing federal facilities, and entering nuclear power plants. The REAL ID requirement went into effect on May 7. DFA officials said the agency is issuing approximately 10,000 REAL IDs a day the week of May 5. They said more than 132,000 were issued in Arkansas between April 1 and early May.
