The Houston Astros (69-55) visit the Detroit Tigers (73-53) Monday in the opener of a 3-game set between division leaders. First pitch at Comerica Park is slated for a 6:40 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Astros vs. Tigers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: Astros lead 2-1 Houston embarks on a Detroit-Baltimore road trip after a 3-3 home stand ending with a 12-0 loss to the Orioles Sunday. The Astros coughed up 6 runs or more in 4 of their 6 games in the Aug. 11-17 stand. Houston leads the AL West, but the Astros are well under .500 since early July. They are 14-20 across their last 34 games. Detroit is back in the Motor City after a 7-2 road swing that ended with a Sunday loss at the Minnesota Twins. Sunday's setback snapped a 4-game win streak for the AL Central leaders. Astros at Tigers projected starters RHP Spencer Arrighetti vs. RHP Jack Flaherty Arrighetti (1-3, 6.38 ERA) is making his fifth start. He has logged a 1.47 WHIP, 5.4 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 through 18 1/3 innings. Flaherty (6-12, 4.76 ERA) is making his 25th start. He has a 1.31 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 11.1 K/9 through 124 2/3 innings. Astros at Tigers picks and predictions Tigers 4, Astros 3 Moneyline The Tigers are 4-1 in their last 5 series openers. Detroit is the side that has been in better form of late. Arrighetti is making his third start off the IL after missing much of the season with a thumb fracture. He was not sharp across several rehab efforts in the minors and is coming off a clunker in his last start at the Major League level. Arrighetti is backed by a Houston bullpen which has struggled its way to a 6.12 ERA this month. Flaherty figures as better than what shows in his surface line, and he has a nice history against Houston. Per ESPN, current Astros batters own an aggregate .686 OPS against him. Flaherty owns a 3.79 ERA at Comerica vs. a 6.08 ERA elsewhere. TAKE THE TIGERS (-155). Run line/Against the spread No interest. PASS. Over/Under The Under is 3-1-1 across Detroit's last 5 games. The analytics present mixed signals here, but with Flaherty's overall prognosis, the Astro offense struggling of late (.678 OPS since July 22), and an inward breeze in the Comerica weather forecast (with fly-ballers on the mound), the UNDER 8.5 (-115) is worth a partial-unit lean. Astros, Tigers start pitchers with something to prove in series opener
August 18 - American League division leaders meet up for what could turn into a preview of a playoff series, as Houston visits Detroit for a three-game series that begins Monday. The Astros hold a slim lead in the West, while the Tigers are in control of the Central. Detroit eliminated Houston during the wild-card round last season. Spencer Arrighetti (1-3, 6.38 ERA) will start the series opener for the Astros. Arrighetti will be making his third start since recovering from a broken thumb, an injury that sidelined him for about four months. Arrighetti's return to action didn't go well. He surrendered five runs and 11 hits to host Miami in 3 2/3 innings on Aug. 6. The right-hander lasted five innings against Boston last Tuesday but was hampered by control issues. He gave up just one hit but walked five while allowing two runs. "It kind of felt like a step forward and a step back in a way," Arrighetti said. "I was really competitive in the zone in Miami and I gave up a lot of hits there. I was less competitive in the zone (Tuesday) and I walked more people than I would ever care to again. So results-wise, I would say it was a step in the right direction and that's encouraging. But at the same time, I've just got to command it a little better." Manager Joe Espada saw some good things in Arrighetti's latest outing. "He pitched out of trouble, which was encouraging to see," Espada said. "For me, it's just more the command, the high pitch count because of the walks. But besides that his stuff is pretty good. His breaking ball was much better (on Tuesday). I thought his fastball played really good. Just got to pitch ahead in the count more and get some quicker outs." Right-hander Jack Flaherty (6-12, 4.76), the Tigers' starter, will look to bounce back from two subpar outings. He gave up six runs (five earned) and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 9-4 home loss against Minnesota on Aug. 6. Flaherty allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 9-6 loss to the host Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. All of the runs came in the fifth inning. "Kind of freaking hard at this point to chalk (it) up to bad luck," Flaherty said. "Call it what you want, but you execute pitches and balls fall in. You can say (it) is bad luck, but it's frustrating at this point." The Tigers continue to anticipate Flaherty will deliver quality performances down the stretch. "Any given time that we put him out there, we know he can help us win," Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said. "We know he's got the ability to dominate and the stuff to match, and we expect him to go out and do it." Arrighetti faced the Tigers once last year and was shelled for seven runs in 1 1/3 innings. Flaherty is 1-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 29 2/3 innings over six career outings (five starts) against the Astros. Both teams will be looking to shake off lopsided losses. Houston was clobbered by visiting Baltimore 12-0 on Sunday while Detroit was thumped 8-1 at Minnesota. --Field Level Media

Astros starter dazzles in first rehab start
The post Astros starter dazzles in first rehab start appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros starting rotation has been missing pieces all season. Cristian Javier continues to rehab from a Tommy John surgery. His return is still weeks away, but Astros manager Joe Espada got some good news on Saturday. Spencer Arrighetti, another starter out with injury, cruised through his first rehab start in Double-A Corpus Christi. Arrighetti had not pitched in a game since April 5. A thumb injury put him on the Astros' 60-day injured list. However, he showed no signs of rust in his first start back. Through three innings with the Hooks, Arrighetti struck out four batters, according to the teams' social media page. Arrighetti's success is a great sign for Espada and the Astros. If he can return to his former glory, he fits snugly behind Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez in the rotation. Starting pitching depth is key for a Houston team clinging to a lead in the American League West. When they get Arrighetti back, Espada's group is one piece closer to being complete. When he was in the major leagues this season, Arrighetti's numbers were inconsistent. However, he pitched less than ten innings across his two starts in 2025. His absence has hurt an Astros rotation that can't afford to be without him for much longer. Espada has called up Ryan Gusto in an effort to tread water. However, he needs Javier, Arrighetti, and Luis Garcia to return to Houston. For now, the Astros have done well to build a decent lead in their division. However, they are not safe. The Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers have each shown signs of life. They are one good run away from pushing Houston for the top spot. Arrighetti's rehab performance is an encouraging sign that things will get easier for the Astros. Espada hopes that the pitcher who dominated in Corpus Christi is the same one he gets back on his roster soon. Astros pitcher Spencer Arrighetti won't need surgery on broken right thumb, team says
SEATTLE (AP) — Houston right-hander Spencer Arrighetti will wear a cast but not require surgery on his broken right thumb, manager Joe Espada said Wednesday. Arrighetti was injured when he was hit by a line drive while playing catch in left field before Monday night's game at Seattle. 'We want to take it one step at a time, but no surgery is great news,' Espada said of the 25 year old, who was placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday, retroactive to Monday. Espada said Arrighetti will be in a cast for up to two-and-a-half weeks. He'll then have additional testing before starting physical therapy. 'After that, if everything looks fine, we can probably start talking about him starting to play catch,' Espada said. 'He was upbeat this morning. I think it's good news.' Arrighetti is 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA in two starts this season. He allowed five runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings during Saturday's 6-1 loss at Minnesota. The sixth-round pick in the 2021 amateur draft went 7-13 with a 4.53 ERA in 28 starts and one relief appearance as a rookie last season. The Astros also said right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. is scheduled to make his third rehab start this weekend on the road back from forearm surgery two years ago. McCullers, who had right forearm surgery in June 2023, is scheduled to start Saturday at Triple-A Sugar Land. The 31-year-old McCullers hasn't pitched since Game 3 of the 2022 World Series, when he took the loss against the Philadelphia Phillies. Houston won the series in six games. McCullers threw two innings and 35 pitches for Triple-A Sugar Land on March 30. He worked 1 2/3 innings for Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday, allowing four hits, three walks and four runs, two earned, on 50 pitches. He is 49-32 with a 3.48 ERA in seven seasons, all with Houston. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press
