Geylang's Tomoyuki Doi up for top honours at SPL Awards Night after record-breaking season
Geylang International striker Tomoyuki Doi (second from right) scored a record-breaking 44 goals in 32 games this season. ST PHOTO: DESMOND WEE SINGAPORE – Geylang International striker Tomoyuki Doi will have the chance to round off a sensational season at the Singapore Premier League (SPL) Awards Night, after being named among the nominees for several honours on May 27. The Japanese star will receive the SPL Golden Boot and a special recognition award after scoring a league-record 44 goals in 31 appearances, surpassing former Singapore Armed Forces FC forward Mirko Grabovac's previous mark of 38 goals in a 33-game campaign in 2001. His attacking exploits have also earned him a spot on the shortlist for the AIA SPL Player of the Year, alongside Lion City Sailors' defender Bailey Wright and forward Shawal Anuar, who played key roles in their club's title victory. Doi, 27, said: 'I'm honoured to be nominated for the two awards. I really am grateful for everyone's support, especially those who supported me in the last 1½ years when I joined Geylang. The key to being where I am is that I have always believed in myself and kept the focus on getting better. It's as simple as that, nothing special.' Due to be held at the Orchard Hotel on June 1, the event will see the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) celebrate standout performances from the SPL and the SPL Under-21 League, with accolades to be presented across 13 categories. The Eagles had more reason to celebrate, with coach Noor Ali nominated for the Polar Mineral Water Coach of the Year award after leading Geylang to a third-placed finish – their best since 2003, when they were runners-up. Also up for the award are the Sailors' title-winning coach Aleksandar Rankovic, a first-time nominee, and BG Tampines Rovers' Gavin Lee. With the Sailors in the running for several top awards, their sporting director Badri Ghent hailed this as a team effort by everyone in the club. In addition to claiming their second SPL title, the Sailors also impressed on the continental stage with a historic run to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Two final, where they lost 2-1 to the United Arab Emirates' Sharjah FC. Ghent said: 'It's a proud moment for everyone at Lion City Sailors and we're humbled to be up for such awards. 'They reflect not just the performances on the pitch, but the countless hours of hard work behind the scenes – from the players and coaches to the support staff and entire backroom team.' He hopes the club can continue their progress after an exceptional season, adding: 'To bag these honours will be a befitting end to what has been a long and memorable season. We'd also like to thank FAS for recognising our efforts in the AFC Champions League Two. 'As a club, we continually challenge ourselves to be even better each season. We will continue to build on the momentum that has been laid this season and, hopefully, represent Singapore football with pride and dignity on the continental stage in the coming years.' The AIA Young Player of the Year category features familiar talent and fresh faces. Seia Kunori is back in the running, this time as a Tampines player, having clinched the award in 2023 while playing for then-champions Albirex Niigata. The attacker is joined by Hougang United winger Farhan Zulkifli and first-time nominee Shingo Nakano, who plies his trade as a forward for Albirex. Kimberly Kwek joined The Straits Times in 2019 as a sports journalist and has since covered a wide array of sports, including golf and sailing. 2025 property awards winners revealed at star ceremony
Several of Queensland's property superstars were given their dues on Friday night, when the winners of the 2025 People in Property Awards were announced. The event was the second gala of its kind, featuring more than 270 people from the real estate industry gathered at Howard Smith Wharves for the dinner. Seven awards were given out throughout the ceremony, including a Legacy Award for Stephen Conry AM, longstanding property professional and former CEO of Jones Lang LaSalle Australia (JLL). Last year's Legacy Award winner, Consolidated Properties boss Don O'Rorke, presented Mr Conry with the award. 'From his home base of Brisbane, he built a national and international business,' he said. 'Post his retirement from JLL, that hasn't stopped Stephen from contributing to the industry and the Property Council. 'As a past national President of the Property Council during Covid, he steered us through one of the most turbulent times globally and for our industry and still remains highly engaged. 'When once again called upon, he stood up to the challenge of chairing the GIICA board and helped deliver an Olympics infrastructure plan we so desperately needed.' Hosted by the Property Council of Australia Queensland, executive director Jess Caire congratulated the people who brought together the state's recent successes in property. 'From the homes we live in, to the spaces and places that shape our cities and underpin our economy, the Queensland property industry is about so much more than bricks and mortar,' she said. 'It is the people behind the projects that deliver social and economic prosperity for Queensland, and these awards are all about showcasing and recognising that incredible talent.' 30 finalists made it to the ceremony, representing 21 different companies currently working in Queensland. Other winners included Dexus' Caitlin Clarke, receiving the Matthew Schneider Rising Star Award. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award went to Ineke McMahon of Objective Property Services, while the People First Award was given to Youngcare's Alycia Meikle. Damian Ling of RPS Group won the night's Pathfinder Award, and Urbis' Peter Hyland took home the night's Industry Impact Award. 'This year's awards were a resounding success and the attendance, nominations and support shown by the property sector is a testament to their dedication and resilience,' Ms Caire said.

Albion cancel £65 awards night screening - and make it free-to-all
Albion have cancelled an Awards Night streaming at The Terrace – and will show the event live and free of charge online. The club had planned to show the gala occasion on screens at their new venue just outside the Amex. But they will now revert to their usual plan of live streaming on YouTube due to what they describe as 'lower demand than expected'. Those who had bought tickets were offered 'sincere apologies'. Fans had been invited to pay £65 (or £75 for premium seating) to watch an exclusive stream of the event going on a few yards from them in the stadium. The price included food, a welcome drink, Q&As with 'key club personnel' and an after-party set from 'an international DJ'. Norman Cook, AKA Fat Boy Slim, had been advertising the event. CARLOS BALEBA EXPLAINS LEWIS DUNK ROLE Awards night would then have been shared freely via YouTube the following day. However, the plan received critical comments from fans unwilling to pay such a price and keen to watch live online as prizes are handed out to players and those who have done great things off the pitch. Albion have now cancelled the event at The Terrace. Chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber has always made it clear the club are finding their way with the impressive new facility, which has been a huge success since opening on March 29. Two new events have now been added to the venue's schedule. There will be a Q&A with former Abion players Guy Butters and Bobby Zamora (May 23) plus a sports quiz hosted by TalkSPORT's Alex Crook (June 9), both priced at £10 per person. The former will be hosted by Ian Hart and comes two days before Albion visit Tottenham, for whom both Zamora and Butters played.
