Teenager in hospital after city centre stabbing

A 17-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after reports of a stabbing in Leicester city centre. Officers were called to Granby Street just before 17:10 BST on Friday along with paramedics who treated the victim at the scene. Police said officers believed the boy was stabbed in the arm and remained in hospital with potentially life-changing injuries. The force said said no arrests have yet been made and are appealing for information. Investigations were carried out at the scene and a police cordon in place has since been lifted. Inquiries to identify those responsible and the circumstances leading up to the boy being injured are under way and in their early stages, officers added. Woman arrested after cat revived following fire

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson after firefighters revived a cat following a blaze at a ground floor flat in Leicester. Crews were called to reports of a fire at a residential building on Manitoba Road, St Matthews, at about 18:30 BST on Saturday, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said. The service added firefighters rescued a cat from the flat and revived it using a dedicated animal oxygen therapy mask and a person – who had escaped the flat before crews arrived – was treated for smoke inhalation. Leicestershire Police said a 52-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of arson and has since been released on bail while investigations continue. Fire crews rescue bat caught in fishing line

Firefighters received an unusual call to help rescue a bat which was tangled up in a tree by a canal in Leicestershire. A crew was called in to help by Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital after a member of the public saw the bat in a tree along the Grand Union Canal in the village of Great Bowden. After being rescued on Friday, vets discovered a fishing line and hook in the bat's wing. Once removed, medics administered rehydration fluids. The bat is now in the care of Leicester and Rutland Bat Group, where he is rehabilitating before he can be released back into the wild. Follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Council shelves parking charge rises after review

Plans to increase parking charges in and around Coalville and Ashby have been shelved. North West Leicestershire District Council had been looking at increasing fees at the car parks it runs. However the authority has confirmed it will freeze rates based on feedback from 4,500 residents and businesses received during a consultation held earlier this month. "We recognise that it's a tough time for our town centres," said deputy council leader Michael Wyatt. The authority said it had launched a review of charges to try to cut the amount it spends subsidising parking because its income from car parks is outstripped by the cost of running them. Wyatt said: "Throughout the course of the car parking review, we've reflected on what people have told us. "We have also done a lot of engagement with partners and businesses in the district, who are understandably concerned about the current economic climate and ongoing pressures on the high street. "While we do need to balance the running costs of our car parks, we also understand that they must be priced competitively to encourage people to continue to visit and work in our town centres. "Therefore, we've decided that our car parking fees and charges will remain as they are for the foreseeable future." Follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram.
