Ex-officer barred after accessing personal data
A police officer has been barred from serving again after covertly recording confidential information.
Joshua Ellis, who has since resigned from Leicestershire Police, was found to have deliberately and secretly made six audio recordings on his personal phone, as well as taking pictures on the same device during a drugs raid, a misconduct hearing found.
The recordings, made between April and October 2020, captured the personal details of his colleagues and members of the public, including names and addresses, and details concerning criminal offences.
A panel heard his colleagues said the former officer had "breached their trust by recording them in secret".
Mr Ellis admitted to secretly making four recordings and taking photos without telling colleagues.
He denied another three instances were done knowingly, with two of those ruled intentional by hearing chairman Steven Cooper, and the third accidental.
Mr Cooper accepted Mr Ellis required reasonable adjustments, but said this did not make the use of his personal phone "the correct course of action".
He added the former officer had chosen "not to use those devices that were provided and recommended to him" and instead used one that was "insecure and had it been lost, would have contained data that was extremely sensitive".
His actions were "clearly in breach of data protection rules" and he should have known this as he had only completed training on this a little more than two months before, the panel chairman added.
Mr Cooper ruled that Mr Ellis's behaviour, while not intended to cause harm to his colleagues or the police, was "inappropriate and inexplicable".
He added that Mr Ellis should have "foreseen the risk of harm by storing personal and operational data on his personal phone".

Perry Police arrest woman for allowing her child to eat cannabis brownie
PERRY, N.Y. (WROC) – A Perry man was arrested after officers with the Perry Police Department received reports of a domestic incident in Perry on Covington Street last month. Officers say the incident took place during a party between 44-year-old Bobbie Ellis, 444, a man, and a child the two have in common. During the investigation, officers say Ellis provided and allowed her child, who's a minor, to consume a cannabis brownie and that Ellis was growing her own cannabis and 'had more plants than what is allowed by New York State Law governing the private ownership, cultivating, and harvesting of cannabis for private consumption.' Officers say when Ellis arrived to Perry Village Court for another matter on June 10, she was taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child for providing and allowing her child to consume a cannabis brownie. Officers also charged Ellis with cultivating more than six mature cannabis plants and six immature cannabis plants for a total of 12 plants. While investigating officers learned Ellis was in possession of 21 immature cannabis plants which were seized and disposed of by the Perry Police Department. Man seriously hurt in stabbing in street attack
A man has been seriously injured in a stabbing during a fight on a Greater Manchester street. Officers were called to reports of an altercation near the Daisyfield Inn on Keb Lane, Oldham, at about 11:40 BST, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. A man suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to hospital for treatment while another man received a minor hand injury, the force said. GMP said three men were arrested on suspicion of affray offences. A cordon remains in place at the scene and the road is closed while police investigate. Sources: Egypt deports more activists seeking to march to Gaza border
Egyptian authorities have continued to send home foreign activists, who are trying to march to Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian enclave, sources at Cairo airport said on Saturday. Dozens of activists of different nationalities were prevented from entering Egypt for violating the country's entry procedures and were deported on the same planes that had earlier brought them to Cairo, the sources said on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue. The aircraft were not granted permission to take off until the deportation procedures were completed, a measure that caused several flights to be delayed by 20-40 minutes, according to the sources. Participants in the self-styled "Global March to Gaza" had originally planned to travel from Cairo to the Egyptian city of al-Arish in Sinai, where they were to walk for about 50 kilometres to Rafah on the border with Gaza. The activists also planned to protest at the Rafah border crossing for several days starting on Sunday. Protests are heavily restricted in Egypt. Organizers said many participants had been detained, harassed, physically harmed and deported. Hundreds of activists were detained on Friday in the Egyptian city of Ismailia near the Suez Canal and had their passports confiscated, a security source said. Carola Rackete, a lawmaker in the European Parliament from Germany's The Left party, posted a video on Instagram on Friday in which she said she was turned away at one of the checkpoints. She and the other activists were purportedly loaded by force onto buses by security forces and sent back to Cairo. There was massive police violence, Rackete said in a second video posted Saturday. There was no official Egyptian comment.
