EastEnders' Anita Dobson addresses 'very weird and emotional' return to BBC soap

Former EastEnders star Anita Dobson has shared her feelings about her poignant return to the BBC soap, confessing it felt odd to be back on set. The 75 year old actress, who is fondly remembered for her role as the legendary Angie Watts, recently graced Albert Square once more for the show's milestone anniversary episode. She originally portrayed the Queen Vic's inaugural landlady from the very first broadcast in 1985 and left the scene three years on. In a touching tribute to EastEnders' 40th anniversary, Anita made an emotional cameo during the hour-long special, sharing a tear-jerking moment with her on-screen daughter Sharon – a staggering 37 years since she last stepped into Angie's shoes. After her brief appearance, Anita joined the Monday (May 19) edition of BBC The One Show, where presenter Roman Kemp was quick to delve into her nostalgic visit to Walford,, reports Belfast Live. Roman dove straight in with his question: "You got the opportunity to reprise your role in the 40th anniversary. What was that like getting back there?" Anita opened up: "It was weird, very emotional and it was absolutely lovely. It was like stepping into a bath of warm water, warm bubbled water." She continued: "Everyone was gorgeous to me and it was wonderful working with Letitia (Dean) again, who plays Sharon and I couldn't believe I got back into the costume - the original costume. I'm very proud of that." Angie Watts, Anita's character, met her end off-screen due to alcohol poisoning in 2002, but she made a spectral comeback to interact with her daughter Sharon, portrayed by Letitia Dean. In a heart-wrenching scene, Angie visited Sharon, pleading with her to cry out for help as she lay pinned beneath a broken staircase. The emotional scene featured Angie looking remarkably youthful, sporting her signature brown curls and red lipstick. Regarding the decision to revive Angie Watts for the 40th anniversary, EastEnders Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw stated: "Angie Watts is undoubtedly one of EastEnders most formidable and iconic landlady's. "Since the very first episode, Anita instantly created a character that the audience adored and she not only shaped EastEnders into the show it is today, but also had a huge impact on British television. ". He added: "Anita was of course top of our ultimate wish list when we were discussing what we would love to include in our special anniversary week, so it was the best birthday present we could ever receive when she said yes. "Watching Angie Watts walk through the doors of The Queen Victoria, 40 years to the day she made her first appearance in Walford, is a moment we will always treasure as we celebrate this show that has played such a significant role in British television. Happy birthday EastEnders."

More info Spanish broadcasters have taken a bold stand at the Eurovision Song Contest, facing potential hefty fines after defying warnings from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Spanish hopeful Melody entered the contest with an energetic number, resonating with audiences throughout the continent. Yet, despite its popularity, Spanish networks overlooked cautions from the EBU. A black screen showing white text in both Spanish and English heralded the final, stating: "When human rights are at stake, silence is not an option. Peace and Justice for Palestine." This powerful interlude lasted 16 seconds on air. The message swiftly caught fire among social media circles. Controversy sparked from the get-go as pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered to protest Israel's participation in the event. The subsequent storm brewed around Israel's act, reports the Mirror. (Image: X) (Image: AFP via Getty Images) (Image: AP) The artist representing Israel received a polarising reaction from those present. After Yuval Raphael expressed gratitude to the audience post-performance, UK commentator Graham Norton didn't miss the chance to take a playful dig at Switzerland and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Comedian Graham gave a candid insight to UK viewers, saying: "I'm not sure what you're hearing at home, but it was a mixed response." This forthright comment followed allegations that the Eurovision Song Contest had masked the sound of audience boos directed at a contentious participant by overlaying artificial applause. Stay tuned with our live blog for all things Eurovision Song Contest. Allegations have surfaced that the contest's organisers attempted to suppress the booing from the crowd in the arena. This controversy emerged after the rehearsal performance of 'New Day Will Rise' on Friday night. A statement was issued concerning the manipulation of crowd noise, stating: "For the Eurovision Song Contest, the host broadcaster SRG SSR is working with the 'audio sweetening' method, which is common practice for major international productions." The statement further explained: "This process helps to harmonise the sound of the transitions between moderations, video clips and the individual acts and to create a consistent soundscape for the TV audience. It is used exclusively for the technical rounding off of the programme." It also clarified: "This process is used equally and identically for all acts. The competition and its results are not affected in any way." Viewers at home didn't hesitate to hop onto social media to discuss the varied reactions following the broadcast. There was an attempt to disrupt the Israeli performance at the arena, with two individuals making a dash for the stage, according to the organisers. A spokesperson for SRG SSR disclosed: "At the end of the Israeli performance a man and a woman tried to get over a barrier onto the stage. "They were stopped. One of the two agitators threw paint and a crew member was hit. The crew member is fine and nobody was injured. The man and the woman were taken out of the venue and handed over to the police."

BBC The One Show's Alex Jones' shares revelation about husband's health battle

BBC The One Show's Alex Jones' shares revelation about husband's health battle The One Show's Alex Jones has been married to insurance broker Charlie Thomson since 2015 Broadcaster Alex Jones has spoken candidly about her husband Charlie Thomson's harrowing health ordeal. In the previous year, she divulged that Charlie had experienced a "rough period" throughout 2023. The beloved One Show presenter tied the knot with insurance broker Charlie in 2015, and they have been blessed with three children since. However, last year Alex confided that Charlie had become merely a "shadow of himself" amid his mental health struggles, reports the Mirror. ‌ On a podcast discussion, she recounted witnessing Charlie "fall apart" as he dealt with Lyme Disease and viral meningitis. During her conversation on Gabby Logan's podcast The MidPoint, a relieved Alex reported that Charlie is "in a much better place now". ‌ She explained her motivation to podcast host Gabby: "I think what drives me is the fact that we have got three young children, and I feel, for them, I need to do the best to preserve myself." Article continues below "He also wasn't very well last year," she mentioned, prompting Gabby to inquire: "How is he now?" To this, Alex replied: "He's good, yes. He's in a way better place now to where we were a year ago but diet has played a huge part in that. We always eat relatively well but he's quite into nutrition." She elaborated: "I think it was a way for him as well to fill his days in a sense when he wasn't feeling well. And he decided to take on this kind of role, right, well, we've got the medication, but I'm going to see what else I can do to help myself. He used to be a chef so cooking and food is very much something he loves and it brings him a lot of joy. ‌ "I'm very lucky he cooks most meals, but I do say it's the glory job because nobody says, 'you stacked that dishwasher so well,' so he does all the cooking but we eat really well. "Lots of pulses, lots of greens, lots of vegetables, and this thing that was news to me that five to 10 a day isn't enough, it's the variety, eat the rainbow, I say it on a loop to my children," she articulated. The couple share three children (Image: PA ) ‌ "Charlie makes all their meals, which is brilliant so they eat really well," she mentioned regarding the children's nutrition. Alex then jestingly remarked: "Don't get me wrong Annie was having sugar at six months, Ted didn't even see sugar until he was three." While she did not specify her husband's mental health struggles, she did touch upon them on the How To Fail Podcast, revealing that her husband had "gone downhill fast mentally". Article continues below "It's my husband's own story to tell, so I won't go into detail, but he suffers with his mental health and we've just been through a really bad period where, bless him, he had Lyme Disease and then he had viral meningitis. Lots of things happened recently." If this story has affected you, call the Samaritans on 116123 or visit a local Samaritans branch. See for more details.
