Tight security at CM, dy CMs residences
Bhubaneswar: Security was tightened near the residences of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, deputy chief ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida to prevent any law and order situation arising out of protests following the death of Puri burn victim. The high-profile quarters in the city saw heavy deployment of police personnel. Public movement was restricted in certain stretches to stop assembling of a large number of people. Police sealed the road from AG Square to Governor's House in the city. Security personnel were also deployed near the house of the burn victim in Puri district, anticipating violent protest. Police sensed simmering tension among people, especially supporters of opposition parties, after the death of the Puri burn victim. Leader of opposition and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik condoled the girl's death. Congress state president Bhakta Charan Das said justice should be served to the deceased girl by taking stringent action against the accused. BJD MP Sulata Deo said the govt failed to provide justice to the Puri girl. "The Balasore self-immolation case and now the Puri burn victim case have proved that women are not safe in the state. "We will gherao the DGP office after seven days to protest against police inaction in the case," he added. BJP MP Rabindra Narayan Behera said the Odisha govt extended all possible help for the girl's treatment. "Opposition parties should not politicise the matter. During the tenure of the BJD-led govt, many issues were suppressed. But the BJP govt in Odisha does not suppress any issue and extends all help to the victim and family apart from taking immediate action in the matter," he added. Steps being taken to increase security for tourists: Pravati
Bhubaneswar: Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Pravati Parida on Monday said Odisha tourists don't require special permission from their home countries to visit the State. Answering media queries over the Level-2 travel advisory issued by the US State Department, Parida said on Monday: 'I was checking the data and found that the number of American tourists visiting Odisha is very negligible. The US may find the rapid development of India a threat, and for this, they are making such assertions. But I don't feel Odisha or any other State in India are in such a situation that tourists will visit that region after getting permission from their country. Every country is free to make laws for its citizens. However, India is safe under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.' The Tourism Minister also highlighted the prompt action taken by police following the college student gang-rape incident at Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district on June 15 that shocked the whole nation. Emphasising the State government's concerns over women's safety, she asserted that police succeeded in arresting all the accused involved in the shameful incident within just a few hours of the incident. She also informed mediapersons that the State government has already held two meetings mulling steps to increase security at various tourist spots and lovers' points in the State, and a decision in this regard will be taken soon. Speaking on the issue, Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the US travel advisory is a diplomatic issue which will be addressed diplomatically by the Ministry of External Affairs. Earlier, the Opposition Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had targeted the State government over the travel advisory issued by the US State Department, alleging deterioration of the law and order situation in the State under the BJP-led government. Senior BJD leader Arun Sahoo has alleged that the advisory issued by the US government corroborates the party's claim that the law and order situation has collapsed in Odisha, and incidents of women facing sexual abuse and other atrocities increased during the last year under the BJP-led State government. He also accused that Moist activities, which were suppressed during the BJD-led government, are rearing their head again in the State.

MPs, MLAs given powers to recommend teacher transfers
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has authorised elected representatives in the State to recommend the transfer of up to 15 primary and secondary school teachers within their respective constituencies, informed by a notification issued by the School and Mass Education(S&ME) department on Tuesday. 'Government after careful consideration have been pleased to give discretion to Hon'ble MPs/MLAs to recommend up to 15 most deserving cases of transfer of teachers (that shall include both Elementary & Secondary) pertaining to their constituency area, to the Collector concerned of the district, for disposal of the same by the District Level Transfer Committee (DLTC) during this transfer session,' reads the notification. However, the State government has laid down certain conditions for the Members of the Legislative Assembly and Members of Parliament. As per the S&ME department notification, the recommendation should not violate the principle of rationalisation. It also clarified that priority should be given to the teachers with an urgent need. The government has barred the transfer of teachers from rural areas to urban areas. The government also noted that the elected representatives can only propose the transfer of teachers within the same district. 'This discretion is applicable for intra-district transfer only. The proposals of the Hon'ble MPs/MLAs are to be submitted to the District Collector concerned and will be disposed of by the DLTC. Where the Parliamentary Constituency (PC) covers more than one district, the proposals will be submitted to the Nodal Collector (Returning Officer of that PC) under intimation to the other Collectors within the jurisdiction of that PC for disposal by respective DLTC(s),' added the notification. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha members have been suggested to send their list of recommendations to the Director of Secondary Education under intimation to the Director of Elementary Education, which will forward the list to the respective Collectors under intimation to the DEE for disposal of the same by the DLTC(s). The Odisha government also directed that all the proposals should be submitted and disposed of during this transfer session (15th May to 15th June) only. The government notified that this provision is a one-time measure, which is applicable only for the current educational year. A similar notification was issued by the previous BJD-led government in 2021, allowing the elected representatives to recommend the transfer of up to 10 primary and secondary school teachers within their respective constituencies during the 2021-2022 academic session.
