Five of the best self-tanning products for a streak-free glow all year round

Pale limbs this winter? While we're bundling up to brave the cold, one surprise outfit switch could leave your arms or legs suddenly exposed. If you're looking to cheat your way to a sun-kissed glow, there are plenty of self-tanning formulas on the market that will bronze your body in no time at all. From streak-free express tans to scent-free gradual moisturisers, there are more ways than ever to fake a 'just came back from Europe' look. Whether you prefer an instant tan or a fast-drying mousse, Best Picks have rounded up the top-rated faux glows on the market for a natural-looking tan. 1. Bondi Sands Ultra Express Tanning Foam, $27.95 at Bondi Sands We get it — sometimes tanning can take a bit of effort — but Bondi Sands' Ultra Express Tanning Foam is here to save the day. Perfect for achieving a natural glow in as little as an hour, the game-changing formula features a world-first ColourLock Accelerator technology to develop a warm, rich colour. 2. Bali Body Instant Tan Cream, $25.95 at Priceline Chances are you've already heard about Bali Body's formulas, because they are just that good. One product we can't stop raving about here at Best Picks is the Instant Tan Cream, a nourishing cream-like texture that goes on just like a moisturiser. There's one key difference — it adds an instant tanning colour, making it great for applying last minute before heading out the door. 3. Three Warriors Hydrabronze Tanning Drops, $39 at Adore Beauty Approved by none another than Sonia Kruger, Three Warriors is another tanning brand loved by Aussies across the country. The latest launch to join their impressive faux-glow lineup is the Hydrabronze Tanning Drops, a skincare infused formula that not only adds a post-holiday bronze, but moisturises and nourishes at the same time. 4. Coco & Eve Sun-Kissed Gradual Tanning Lotion, $42 at The Iconic For those who tend to steer clear of a mousse formula, a gradual tanning lotion will give you a natural bronze, without the fuss. Coco & Eve's Gradual Tanning Lotion is non-sticky and absorbs quickly into the skin, slowly developing a subtle shade of colour that lasts up to four days. 5. St Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Face Mist, $34.99 at Priceline If your face is looking a little laclustre, you could be in need of a touch of faux glow to add a spring to your step. While many traditional tanning formulas are designed for the body rather than the face, St Tropez Face Mist is the perfect pick-me-up. Infused with 100 per cent natural tanning agents and hibiscus agents, simply spray a few pumps onto clean, dry skin.

'I ditched my normal fake tan for this self-tanning milk and my skin has never felt softer'

Shopping Writer Meghan has switched out her normal foam self-tanner for this innovative tanning milk that's left her skin 'looking and feeling so smooth' This year, I've tried a range of self-tanning products, from celebrity-loved foams to drugstore classics, but I think my latest tanning find takes the cake. From the iconic brand Bali Body comes this Self Tanning Milk, which switches the traditional foam or moisturising formula for a milky consistency that feels more like skincare than my normal tanners. With no sticky residue, long drying times, or even any colour cast, this self-tanning product doesn't feel like any product I've tried before—and at first, I was very apprehensive. Other tanners I've tested that don't have a colour cast have been a little bit of a let down, with poor pigment or patchy results. Not to mention, the chances of mistakes when applying skyrocket when you can't see where you've applied the tanner. But this tanning milk was far from disappointing - in fact, I don't think I'll be using any other tanner for the rest of the summer. As the name suggests, this tanning product features a milk formula that looks like a creamy serum rather than a moisturiser, foam, or mousse. It's still recommended that you use a tanning mitt to buff the liquid into the skin, though it's instructed that you apply the milk straight to the skin and then use the mitt (or brush, if you prefer) to spread it around. Like I said earlier, at first, the milky formula made me a little apprehensive. This only increased when I began to buff it in, and the thin serum-like tanner began to soak into the skin without leaving any colour cast behind. But I had faith in the band known for producing impressive self-tanning products. I applied all over, which was easy enough thanks to its thin consistency, though I was slightly worried about streaking or missing patches as I couldn't be entirely sure everywhere I wanted covered was evenly saturated. More akin to a gradual tanner, this milk doesn't have a designated time that you have to leave it in. Thanks to the lack of a colour cast, it also doesn't require rinsing off. So I chose to leave mine on overnight (roughly 8 or 9 hours). One thing that instantly earned me points was that, by the time I had finished applying, the tanner was already beginning to dry down without leaving behind a tacky texture. My skin felt instantly hydrated and nourished, in a way I've never felt with a tanning product before, and it was soft to the touch already. Plus, my skin wasn't sticky or still damp with the tan - something I love, as I tend to leave my tan on overnight and don't like feeling tacky when I go to bed. Now, if I'm being honest, when I first woke up, the tanner hadn't done a huge amount; a fact that's slightly disappointing as I used the medium to dark variety. I had a noticeable glow to my skin and a healthy tinge of colour, but nothing that screamed 'I've just come back from a holiday on the coast'. That said, my skin felt incredible. It was so soft and smooth, and didn't feel weighed down from the tanner. I felt rejuvenated and super hydrated. But the colour wasn't what I had hoped; it's worth noting that I prefer to tan darker when I'm using fake tan, so this may first layer that would suit someone who fancies a subtle, sunkissed look without going three shades darker. Rather than give up, I decided to try the tanning milk again to see if it changed anything—and I'm so glad I did. When I woke up, my skin was just as glowy, looking healthy, and somehow almost blurred on my arms and legs. My hands and feet didn't look absurdly darker than the rest of my body (which I've found with typical tanning mousses), and even dryer areas like elbows, knees, and armpits aren't significantly dryer or patchier, something I can only attribute to the fact that this milk definitely hydrates the skin while tanning. The colour is stunning and just what I was looking for, and the end results are unbelievably seamless—no streaking, patches, or weird pigmentation. My skin looks flawless and feels so healthy. I've already received comments from friends and family who've noticed how smooth my skin looks and feels. Though I can't comment on the longevity of the tan since it's only been a week so far, something I have noticed is that areas where my tan normally lifts first (feet, hands, armpits, around the bra area), whether it's from sweat, clothes, or washing, have not yet budged. Even after a gym session, the tan didn't appear to have moved. And when showering, I noticed very minimal colour rinsing off, which is reassuring. Plus, thanks to the lack of colour cast, there are no stains left behind on clothes or bed sheets. Truly a blend of skincare and self-tanner, I don't think I'll go back to using other tanning products this summer, and it's quickly become a firm favourite of mine. Plus, for 240ml, this tanning milk is relatively affordable, selling for £27 from Boots, ASOS, and select supermarkets, including Sainsbury's. Bali Body doesn't stop with this tanning milk. If you're looking for alternative hydrating tanners, check out their line of hydrating tanning serums, which cost £28.95 at Selfridges or £21.71 at Lookfantastic.

We're sharing the formulas we genuinely love and buy time and time again, all tried and tested to give a natural, radiant glow without any hassle, the dreaded fake tan smell or messy sheets. So, whether you're prepping for a holiday, topping up for an event or just want a faux glow this heatwave, these are the fake tans our Mirror beauty and shopping team swears by... Bali Body Gradual Tanning Butter Shop it for £17.99 on sale This tanning butter gently builds a sun-kissed tan while deeply nourishing your skin with rich moisturisers like shea butter and coconut oil. Head of beauty and fashion Zoe says: "This is a fake tan that smells nothing like one – no biscuit scent, just a summery undertone that is very pleasant. It doubles as a luxe body lotion too, packed with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and shea butter that leave my post-sun skin feeling nourished. It's perfect if you're a tanning beginner because it's practically foolproof with no streaks or orange tones in sight. The subtle gold shimmer gives an instant glow, even while the tan develops, and it dries so quickly that I can get into my pyjamas five minutes later. Bonus: no stained sheets or towels. Isle of Paradise Glow Clear Self Tanning Mousse Shop it for £22 A clear mousse with a no-transfer formula to give a light, medium or dark tan while offering colour-correcting abilities. Beauty and wellness editor Laura says: "The transparent formula (I use the medium shade) means no transfer on clothes or bedding, which is a big win. Once developed, it gives a natural, golden glow that smooths out redness and imperfections, making me feel confident in summer clothes. It lasts impressively well too– still showing colour a week after my holiday. While it takes time to apply and develop, it's definitely my go-to for a reliable, natural tan before every trip." St. Tropez Gradual Tan Tinted Body Lotion Shop it for £18 A moisturising gradual tan that provides a soft, buildable sun-kissed glow while nourishing the skin. Senior shopping writer Faith says:"I don't use fake tan often, but when I do I tend to stick to ones that are heavy on the moisturiser. I typically have dry skin with patches of eczema, so a hydrating and moisturising one is essential for me to avoid it settling into those dry areas. I also want something that's quick and easy to use – no long times leaving it to develop, having to shower it off again. "That's why the St. Tropez Gradual Tan Tinted Body Lotion is definitely a go-to for me. It gives you an instantly tanned glow, and develops over time without needing to be washed off. The lotion is easy to blend (I use a tanning mitt) and I find it doesn't go streaky and dries quickly so there's minimal time spent standing around waiting around. It does have a green undertone which may not work for every skin tone, but I find this suits my skin's naturally red undertones as it neutralises the red, making it look more natural. The only down side is that if you get rained on, or spill something on your tan, it will become blotchy. However for those last minute tan top ups or a quick fix, this is a great go-to." Utan Cool Undertone Instant Airbrush Spray Shop it for £17.99 This wash-off tan gives your skin an instant, buildable bronzed glow while evening out tone, all with a fresh, non-fake tan scent. Shopping writer Grace says: "At first, I wasn't sure the colour would be rich enough for me since the initial spritz was very sheer. But the beauty of this product is how quickly it dries, making it super easy to build up for a more bronzed look. It behaves more like body make-up than a traditional fake tan, so it's brilliant for evening out skin tone and giving a subtle glow without going full-on mahogany. If you're after a deep, dramatic tan, this probably won't hit the mark – but for last-minute plans or a quick confidence boost, it's ideal. I'm a bit hopeless at remembering to fake tan in advance, so this handy little spray has earned a permanent place in my handbag. And the scent? Think warm vanilla and tonka, not that usual biscuit-y smell. Loving Tan 2 HR Express Mousse Shop it for £29.56 on sale Article continues below This fast-working mousse delivers a natural, olive-toned tan in just two hours, thanks to its quick-drying formula and colour guide technology. Shopping writer Meghan says:"Applying this tanning mousse is as easy as using my usual moisturiser – the only tricky bit is my back, but with a bit of help, it takes under 30 minutes. I start with the two-hour guide for a subtle glow, but when I leave it on overnight, I wake up looking like I've just got back from the Med. It dries quickly, doesn't transfer to bedding, and the aloe vera base keeps my skin hydrated without clinging to dry patches. The result is a natural-looking, olive-toned tan that works beautifully on my pale skin. The mitt does slip a little on smaller hands, but it's a small gripe in an otherwise seamless tanning routine.

Bali Body's bestselling gradual tan that leaves no orange sheets is on sale

"It gives a mousse-like medium bronze tone but with the skin-loving benefits of a hydrating body butter" As a person who turns practically translucent in the winter and remains eerily pale even when summer arrives, I've always been envious of those who effortlessly bronze and glow as soon as the sun shines. Unfortunately, my skin doesn't tan anymore – it just freckles. So, when I planned a tropical holiday this year, I knew I needed something to give me a bit of healthy colour. The issue is, fake tan and I have a complex relationship. I've tried several that left me streaky, orange or smelling like biscuits. I also despise tans that feel sticky to sleep in and transfer onto sheets. However, I'd heard glowing reviews about Bali Body's Gradual Tanning Butter, a moisturiser-tanning hybrid promising hydrated, buttery-soft skin with a buildable golden glow. It seemed like a dream for someone like me – a fake tan avoider with zero patience for high-maintenance beauty routines. I packed a tub in my suitcase and kept my fingers crossed. After using it religiously every evening on holiday (and still going strong now that I'm back), I can't see myself replacing it with another tan. And now that it's on sale on Boots for £17.99 instead of £26.99, I'm stocking right up! So, why is it so good? If you love the idea of a gradual tan but still want to see some colour without waiting days, Bali Body's Gradual Tanning Butter has your name all over it. It gives you a slow-build bronze but with the bonus of a bit more oomph – think the instant tint you'd get from a medium mousse, but way more moisturising. The texture is rich and buttery, sinks in like a dream and leaves your skin with a subtle glow straight away, so you're not left wondering if it's actually doing anything. Ingredient-wise, it's a proper skin treat. There's shea butter, cocoa butter and aloe vera in the mix to keep things soft and smooth, and vitamin E gives it that extra bit of TLC. The colour deepens over the next day or two, but you still get that satisfying just-applied warmth, which makes it perfect for topping up your tan or faking a little holiday skin midweek. No streaks, no smell, and definitely no waiting around in a towel – just healthy-looking colour and skin that feels like velvet. While the medium bronze shade is perfect for me, I can appreciate some people love a darker bronze. So if you were to ask me whether there's a tan out there that develops a bit darker but still doesn't transfer onto sheets or feel sticky, I'd direct you to Tan-Luxe's Hydra-Mousse Hydrating Self Tan Mousse. It's a bit of a splurge at £36, but it's probably the only mousse I don't dread using.
