As calls for Star Wars Battlefront 3 grow stronger, an ex-Pandemic dev explains why the original games never got a third entry: "We started working on it and then negotiations just didn't take off"

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is having a resurgence in popularity at the moment, with calls for a sequel to the 2017 DICE-developed title to come out being so strong that even former devs are getting in on it. But it wouldn't be the first Star Wars Battlefront 2 to not get a sequel, as the mid-2000s version of the series also never made it past the number 2 (and no, I'm not counting the squadron games on handhelds). A Pandemic Studios follow-up never surfaced, and Free Radical Design's take on it never came out despite being allegedly very close to completion. Battlefront 2 designer Dan Nanni claims that Pandemic did in fact start working on a third game, but a breakdown in communication with LucasArts is what caused it to never happen. "We started working on it and then negotiations just didn't take off," Nanni told VideoGamer, adding that the one-year development time of the previous two games wouldn't fly a third time due to the transition to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. "When you're moving to a new console it's not as easy as saying, 'let me just make a game for it like we did for the old console'. New consoles have new hardware and new hardware comes with new limitations and you don't know exactly what you're working with until you've got it." Nanni added, "I think, negotiations stalled out because I think we wanted more time to work on it. But obviously, Lucas was also trying to align it with their own marketing beats." One of the big elements found in the leaked Battlefront 3 from Free Radical was the inclusion of missions that took place in both flight and ground sections. Nanni told Videogamer that this was actually in the cards for Pandemic's version too, "We had some tech on it that was pretty fun. And was working really well," adding "in Battlefront II we had space missions and we were like, 'well, what's the evolution of that' and everyone was like 'well, it's ground to space'. A big battlefield that is Star Wars all the time." Nanni said that if the team had been "given the time, we'd have made something really special." Pandemic would move on from Star Wars, with the closest thing to a sequel from the studio being The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, which adapted the gameplay of Battlefront into a better property. After that, it was the underrated WW2 game The Saboteur before EA threw the studio into its big landfill of shuttered studios. "We cough up a chunk of our soul": 32 game devs, from Doom's John Romero to Helldivers 2 and Palworld leads, explain what people get wrong about games.

Star Wars actor says the series has ‘gotta give us Battlefront 3 ASAP'

One of Andor's stars has helped bring Star Wars Battlefront back into the spotlight and he's not the only one amongst the cast to be an avid gamer. It's been more than five years since EA wrapped up support for Star Wars Battlefront 2 and while the company has continued to push out new titles for the franchise, it appears to have little interest in making a Battlefront 3. Over the last few weeks, though, Battlefront 2 enjoyed a sudden surge in players, on both PC and consoles, which has prompted some hope that EA will be encouraged to start work on a new sequel. It's not entirely clear what promoted the surge in interest, but it seems to have been a combination of Star Wars Day in early May, the 20th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith (which became the highest-grossing re-release of all time in the US), and the second season of Andor on Disney+. Speaking of which, actor Muhannad Ben Amor, who played the role of Wilmon 'Wil' Paak in Andor, has also expressed his interest in seeing a third entry in the multiplayer shooter series. In the wake of the show's conclusion earlier this month, he took to Instagram to say, 'Star Wars gotta give us Battlefront 3 ASAP.' He also shared a screenshot of his playtime on Battlefront 2, revealing he's spent about 469 hours on the game: 'Been a veteran since day one. Let's hope Battlefront 3 happens!' Considering Amor would have been a young teenager when Battlefront 2 was out (he's roughly 19 or 20 years old and the game launched in 2017), he's clearly in pretty deep. His original posts were Instagram Stories, so they've already automatically deleted themselves, but fans on Reddit were quick to save them as screenshots to spread Amor's comments around. According to SteamDB, Battlefront 2's concurrent player count has reached over 18,600 players, the most it's ever been since the game launched on Steam in 2020. The game has also shot up the best-seller lists on Xbox and PlayStation 5. Mats Helge Holm, who served as associate producer on Battlefront 2's Celebration Edition, has weighed in on the situation, stating on Reddit that there's interest amongst the old team to work on a sequel: '… having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together.' It's not him but the bean counters at EA who get to make that decision, although this wouldn't be the first time a Star Wars actor influenced one of their games. John Boyega, who played Finn in the sequel trilogy of movies, publicly complained about the lack of a single-player campaign in the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront, which led to EA offering him an invitation to its UK studio. EA never publicly said Boyega's comments contributed to the decision to add a campaign mode to Battlefront 2, but it did get one and Boyega agreed to do some marketing for it. Perhaps surprisingly though, Ben Amor is not the only keen gamer amongst the Andor cast. Ben Mendehlson, who played Director Krennic (a role he reprised from Rogue One), has previously expressed his love for the likes of The Last Of Us, Fallout, and the Civilization series. More Trending He was no doubt surprised to discover then, that Andor co-star Denise Gough was the voice of Yennefer in The Witcher 3; a role she admits she forgets she's done sometimes. That suggests that Mendehlson is probably more of a single-player fan, but we get the sense he'd jump at the opportunity to lend his voice to Battlefront 3 if it featured Krennic. As for what Star Wars games EA is working on, its next release is strategy game Star Wars: Zero Company, which has enough similarities to XCOM to make it one of our most anticipated releases of 2026. A third Star Wars Jedi game is also on the cards and will serve as the 'final chapter' of protagonist Cal Ketis' journey – although it's not yet been formally announced. Star Wars Battlefront 2 Dev Wants to 'Get the Band Back Together' For Another Game

A former developer on Star Wars Battlefront 2 has publicly said they'd like to 'get the band back together' and make a Star Wars Battlefront 3. After the success of Andor Season 2 on Disney Plus, there's been a surprising rise in interest in Battlefront 2. The game has seen a bump in players, and both Reddit and especially TikTok have been inundated with fans asking for a Battlefront 3. In a response to a Reddit comment, developer Mats Helge Holme, who worked on both the initial release of Battlefront 2 and it's re-release, said 'Me, and having heard around my group of ex-colleagues, we want to get the gang back together.' Holm also noted that something like a content pack from Andor would still take six months to create, and that's if the proper team was even available. He adds that he has no idea how feasible it would actually be to try and reunite the original dev team as, 'we are spread far and wide.' The team behind Battlefront 2 was disbanded in 2020 when support was ended for the game, and developers were shuffled onto Battlefield 2042 and other projects. There's been a sort of perfect confluence of events that have pushed players back into Battlefront 2. Andor is obviously a part of it, along with the recent Star Wars Celebration in Japan, May the 4th events, and the latest season of Fortnite including Galactic Battle. Battlefront Updates on X says that on May 21, according to a reliable source, the game peaked at 160K+ concurrent players – the highest peak it's had in almost five years. Star Wars Battlefront 2 first released in 2017, and was immediately met with immense backlash to its highly predatory loot box design. Outside of cosmetic items, the system meant iconic character like Darth Vader were locked, and players would need to spend dozens of hours grinding in order to unlock them. EA eventually reversed its microtransaction plan to remove them from the game entirely. Despite those initial stumbles the game did find a passionate and vocal fanbase, with a stream of post-launch updates – especially after a 'Celebration' re-released in 2019 gave the game a wealth of new content. DICE is currently one of three studios working on the Battlefield game, which is set to release sometime in 2025. Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
